Wrench party?

I just struggled through clogged slow speed jets. I replaced them with 38's, did a pretty thorough cleaning, replaced the the pilot jet o-rings and fuel bowl gaskets. Everything went pretty well and I was able to get out for a test ride today. The 38 low speed jets made a huge difference for starting/idling/warm-up. The bike seems to be running pretty well, but I'd like to sync the carbs after the recent work.

Any chance to get some help with a carb sync? Isn't there a set of gauges with the club tools?

I have a lift and a home made adapter if there's a need for an extra lift?
(I'm nearby to cage up the lift before the WP.)

Thanks
Jim

It's time to get an official headcount of who's coming and what needs to be done.

Let's hear it.

The carb sync tool should be with the football.  I'm sure someone will be able to remember how its done.

You will find the bearing part numbers on this site:

Ben, go to either your local dealership or Purvis for bearings.  http://www.purvisindustries.com/popups/01_tx.html  Some folks go to Napa, but in my experience you never know until you have the box in your hand if theirs are Chinese or Argentinian.

'97 front wheel takes two 6004 (42mm Outside Diameter).  All other fronts take two 6204 (47mm OD).  All stock rear wheels take one 6204 and one 5204.  Those who have done the double-row mod for their rear use two 5204.

Your post doesn't indicate front or rear.  If it's front, and if you're unsure of the size, come to the party well before noon and we'll measure it.  There's a Purvis just up the road in Denton, but they close early on Saturday.  You might call ahead and make sure they have some of each.

+1!

I'll be there practicing my laying about.   :D    I'm already pretty good at it, but not nearly as accomplished as I am at heckling.   :coolsmiley:

I'll also be working on some things I've put off since last summer:  Putting my new EdSets speakers in my new helmet and replacing the petcock that WamegoRob so graciously loaned me in the Motel parking lot in La Crosse last summer.  At midnight.  About 6 hours before we were scheduled to depart.

While I'm in there, I'll be ready with a new air filter.  Mine only has 8K miles on it though.  Hmmm...

Replacing it with a new one, or rebuilt?  just curious.

Rebuilt with new oem cover set, drilled rivets, new gasket to replace the original o-ring, and screws where the rivets used to be.

I'll have plenty of time to make sure it works before June.

No worries Mate!!  Just curious if you bit the bullet and bought new or rebuilt one you already had.

Cool beans.

I should have said "newest".  I think you've seen it.  It's not the short-bus/center stripe yellow of the 2000 bumblebee, and it's not quite hi-viz.

I guess I'd call it "OK, so maybe somehow you missed the shiny yellow, black, and chrome bike with all the extra lighting, but if you can't see the helmet I'm wearing even though it matches my jacket and gloves, you have no business driving and are a menace to everyone else on the road" canary yellow.

WDan, didn't we replace your air filter a while back at one of the other wrench parties last fall at VPs?  I remember we had the tank off and I'm almost positive we replaced the filter.

Thanks for reminding me. I saw a filter in my garage in plastic bag thinking it was new but on further inspection, I had saved the old one after I cleaned it.
I was thinking we only rebuilt petcock so I'm good to go.

Buzzkill, 5-19, Brew1brew, Baron, Christbiker, Beesharp, Yoda, Timbo, Planecrazygal, SixGuns, Sixguns' friend,  and Bosman all showed up.

We worked on a leak on Buzzkill's forks, but most of the time went to servicing the rear drive on Yoda's SuperValk.

Last July, when Yoda and I went to San Diego, he was going to ride this bike.  But something didn't feel right, so he rode his Tourer instead.  It was a good decision.  When we took his u-joint out today, we knew it was a bad sign when chunks of metal fell out of the boot.  Two of the arms of the crosspiece had lost all their needle bearings and one of the bearing cups was well on the way to disintegration.  The swing arm had to be swabbed out multiple times to get all the filings and shards out of there.

The rear wheel dampers were also well worn.  Fortunately, both a good u-joint and a new set of dampers were in-stock in the spare parts bin, so we cleaned, lubed, and re-assembled and got him back on the road.  The biggest problem we had was getting the u-joint boot on.  I've never had one fight so hard.  It took almost as long to subdue it as it did to do the whole rest of the job.

We wrapped up around two and headed out to RG Burgers for lunch, just missing Tom, apparently.

Anatomy of a Failing U-Joint
        Just a few more miles...

Another 'job well done' gentlemen! Special thanks to all the fellers with small hands who could reach into even smaller spaces and to Dave Barnett, Woody, 5-19 and Buzzkill for all the greasy fingers and fine work. I sincerely appreciate. What a 'different' ride returning to Firebase Allen.  :police:

It was great seeing everybody and meeting a few (new to me) VRCC members. Made it back to the casa around 6:30 last night. After I dropped off Six Guns west of Fort Worth, I found the scenic route back

VP thanks for the great coffee. FYI my favorite was the Italian Dark Roast and the donuts.
