One of my grandsons, now 28, got all excited one day when he was in an antique shop with his mom. He saw these big round flat black things and the shop owner told him it was a record. "A record of what?" So the owner played it for him, then turned it over and started playing the other side. That's when he got excited, running to his mom and talking about this "new" thing the shop had; "and mom, you can play it on both sides!"  He was even more amazed when he found out they had been available for decades. His question....."so why don't we all know about these?"

His mom called me, telling me she had just picked up more gray hair....then went on to tell me the above story.

I remember the first "transistor" radio. Made in Japan was cool then. I got one for Christmas, and was the coolest kid on the block. Can't remember the exact year, early 60's, but remember the radio very clearly. If I looked a little bit, I probably still have it

I vaguely remember growing up in 70's dad and mom who still have it a huge cabinet 8-track player with record player and radio inside as well.  However, I don't remember 8-track players in vehicles only cassette players.  What a difference going from cassette to CD in vehicles in terms of clarity sound but my speakers in rear window of the 1978 car I drove almost made up for the lack of sound clarity of cassettes since I bet my speakers back then were better than most new OEM speakers they install in the base package of vehicles new nowadays.  You crank up the bass in today's new OEM vehicles and darn speakers BOING loudly pieces of junk.

Sure I remember the parents putting the early 8 tracks into the car, but dad had a 4 track in his pickup.  How many of you have seen a 4 track.  (Think 8 track format only in mono instead of stereo)

As a young man I worked at a place that made Hammond Organ speakers. I got them free.  RIDE SAFE.

I have a cassette player in my old F150, In my stereo in the garage, in the house.  I've got about a million or so cassettes laying around that I can play anytime I want.  Now you got me wanting a Walkman! This isn't taking into account my million or so CDs and players I have.  For the modern types, The wife has Sirius Satellite with her On Star in her Impala.       Hoser

Speakers in the back of most cars in the 70's were 6 X 9's and the loudest ones I installed back then were called Mind Blowers. They required 12V 30A power and had a volume control you mounted under the dash. I installed the crap outta those back then. Matter of fact, I recall installing a couple of under-dash Muntz 4-track players too. Then came the CB craze. I'm totally surprised I still have my hearing after all that, it was like sitting front row at a Head East concert. Every time I lay in bed and it's dead quite I hear a ringing noise and think..........Never Been Any Reason

I used to have a Craig Pioneer 8-track.  It went with me through several cars.  Used to have to have a match book to shove under the cassette to keep it in contact with the head.

You know those 8tracks weren't that bad but you needed a damn suitcase to hold them all .

Even with a suitcase you could still only take about a dozen. 

My mp3 player holds dozens of complete albums....and about a 1000 single tracks....and it's not much bigger than that matchbook that used to be shoved in the 8 track player.

Somewhere in the garage I have two Marantz 45 players. Mount em under the dash and rock around the clock. Hit a rail road track and it starts all over. I got them from a guy who was throwing them away. They'l be the ginchiest inder the dash of my 57 Country sedan.
I also have a walkman that I have used on long rides.
Kinda gotta stop at every .99cent store for more batteries though.

Before tv listening to the shadow ,Amos and Andy on the radio. We had a wind up record player. Ok I'm older than dirt. Our first tv  I watched Kukla, Fran and Ollie or Howdy Doody.

I for one refuse to get into any discussions about "remember when"! Unfortunately I remember way too much, and am reminded of all the years I've stuffed things into my rememberer every time I go to do something, and it hurts. 

What really sucks is that stuff I really need to remember often gets lost in "Senior Moments".

OH YEAH!  WELL LEMME TELL YA, YOU WERE LUCKY TO HAVE TRANSISTOR RADIOS! I dreamed of a walkman.
We had to use smoke signals to get our music. We'd just read the lyrics and sing it ourselves. And I'm sure you can imagine how bad the reception was during rain storms. Of course, if you were close enough to the station, you could hear the drums. And yet, somehow, we got by.

Okay, you can all stop now. I remember when every bit of this stuff was brand new, cutting edge, HIGH TECH GIZMO STUFF. And it reminds me that I am nowhere near brand new, cutting edge, high tech, or anything else but ready to collect Social Security and take a nap. 

Jeez!!!   And here remember thinking two tin cans and a string were high tech. 

Couldn't wait for mom to empty those green bean cans.   BTW, the string from hay  bales doesn't work well no matter how tight a kid pulls on it.

Iwas working at Lear Jet corp in Wichita after I got out of the Navy,  installing 8 track stereo units in Lear Jet aircraft for Bill Lear, the inventor of The 8 track and the first Jet powered business plane.  So there right back atcha, Valker. Hoser

My first radio was a 'cats whisker' crystal set.

 My first record player was a Victrola using cactus needles. It played only 78 rpm records.

My first radio in a car  used a multivibrator. to work through a transformer to increase the voltage for the tubes.

My first 6 meter car mobile ham transmitter and receiver was one that I converted from a state police radio. The transmitter weighed 50 pounds and so did the receiver.  The transmitter used a dynamotor to convert 12v dc to high voltage for the tubes. 23 amps 6 volt on transmit.  The generator couldn't keep up on long transmissions.

My first clock in a car used a point activated armature which wound the spring in the clock.  It was noted for blowing fuses.

Yeah, my conclusion is that I'm old as dirt!  So there too!!!

I won't even talk about my first motorcycle.

Yep, I had a 8 track in my first car.   My Dad had a 4-track installed in his 66 Chev step-side short-wheel based truck.   Still remember the only two cartridges he had, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard.
