Holy cow BRIGHT leds

Got my led driving lights from China today, and cripes they are bright, powered them up and looked back at them from 30 ft away, saw red, green and blue spots for the next 15 min. have to make sure they are aimed low, will blind people. Really surprised that they are that bright, in broad daylight I can see the light on the house 40 foot away, and they are only rated at 30 watts.

I have a black one now, totaled the IS, and tried to kill myself in the process. I bought the lights on Aliexpress in china. Here is a link to them.

Grumpy....I just did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Before you mount them take a look at the information on a waterproof dial operated dimmer switch for them with a high beam override. You can set the beam intensity where you want or like it without having to aim them down. No sense in getting a ton of light then having to aim it down. Then when you want or need it...hit the brights and light up the world! Mine do!

I mounted my switch on that vertical plastic wall just ahead of the battery and under/behind the vacuum operated  fuel shut-off. I can reach in and adjust the intensity from off to full any time I want to. Currently run them around 1/4 power with nobody flashing their brights back at me.

Bill, I is see no light measurements.  Will the clamps fit the valk engine guards, and would they be small enough to go on top the guards just outboard of the IS pods?  Under the guards, the back ends would have to clear the timing belt cover.  How will you mounting them?

Looks like the wires need shrink wrapped.  And I would want mine on a separate switch, not hardwired to dims. 

Wow, dimmer switches on a bike, what will they think of next?  LOL

Here is the set up I just did. I opted for fogs as I want the sides of the road lit up as much as possible. The lights are so cursed bright when looked at head on it doesn't matter. The fogs will help me pick up the Forest Rats better

Dimmer location under the seat and forward of the battery. Photo is taken from the right side of the bike shooting in and under the nose of the seat/rear of the gas tank area. Inward of the fuel shut off.



Another shot of the rotary dimmer. it is the little black box with the dial on it just under the large wire loom and under and behind the fuel shut off diaphragm. Mounted it with double sided sticky tape! Solid as a rock.

The clamps will work OK on the crash bars, but the bolts need to be 1/4 in longer. No biggie, I will pick up some at the hardware store.

I have been wanting some on both my bikes and those look good but I don't like the clamp being serrated . Grumpy how is the clamp attached to the lights? Can they be removed? Thanks.

It looks like in one of the pictures that I can see 2 small screw holes inside the top clamp. 
You might be able to remove them and replace them with the clamp of your choice.

Looks like I do not need to add any type of control for the led lights. They have 3 modes of operation, dim, bright and Strobe. just cycle the power switch to enable any mode.  The strobes are awesome, but would probably get me a driving award.

I don't believe it will work with these lights, they have a built in microprocessor that cycles the light modes, a switch added would cause them to switch to the next mode every time it was moved. Right now I have a rocker switch, first on, lights are bright, cycle the switch off and back on, dim mode, cycle the switch again, both lights strobe, then next off and on, resets to the start of the cycle.

They are bright, I am going to aim them to a point about 75 ft in front of the bike. The beam is more of a spot than a wide angle.

How do you change the LED?  To me, it looks like once the LED burns out/faults out (as they tend to do), your stuck with having to replace the entire unit.  Is this correct?

Then get the brightest LED you want, aim them exactly how YOU want to and get the rotary dimmer switch. Adjust the brightness to keep from blinding oncoming traffic in your normal mode and when you hit the brights they go to their full power.

Dimmer will not work with these, has a built in controller, dim, bright and strobe. And yes if it burns out replace the whole unit, but it is not like they are expensive. Leds are rated at 50,000 hours.

Guess I needed to be more clear. Wasn't suggesting the ones you are running for the rotary dimmer. Sorry 'bout that! Think you covered that in an earlier post.

True... I saw "LED" but was thinking of the energy efficient bulbs and how unreliable their longevity ratings are.  I've had better luck with LEDs, but would still prefer the option of replacing a faulty LED.  May still go with these after all....

Grumpy, do you have power coming directly off the battery?  Tied in with the headlight?  Where is the switch mounted?  Do you have to cycle through the strobe function?  (don't want to accidentally cycle to strobe while riding and not notice).

I mounted the switch on the front frame cover on the left side. If the lights have been powered off for a couple min, when they are turned on the go into bright mode, next off/on dim mode, next off/on strobe mode. And I did wire in a relay that cycles off when the start switch is pressed. But as low a current draw as they are, probably was not necessary. Would really be hard not to notice the strobe mode, lights up the whole front of the bike.
