Route Information Help

Is anyone familiar with this route?  Mostly interested in availability of gas, but any other pertinent info would be appreciated.  Sorry, I don't know how to get the actual map to show up in the post.  TIA Stan

What Valk are you riding.  Hwy 50 across Nv does  have it's challenges for gas.

"the loneliest road in America"... I ran it east and west last September. Services are few and far between.

Fallon is a fair size city... plenty of opportunity for gas - food - lodging.

Austin -  is a small town with two places for food and two places for gas. Austin city limits are on a fairly steep east/west grade with business' on the north/south side of the road. Is difficult to find a place to park and put the sidestand down. Slow maneuvers on the uneven grade is an invitation to dump the bike ( ). Gas on the west end of town and on the east end of town. Gas up before you go any further.

Eureka - is a bigger town than Austin. Gas - food - lodging available. Gas up before you go any further.

Ely - is bigger than Eureka, plenty of gas - food - lodging. Gas up before you go any further.

Utah/Nevada State line - one little store/cafe/gas station. You may want to top off gas before you go further. Next available gas is Delta, Utah.

Delta - Is a good size town with gas - food - lodging. Gas up here before you go any further.

The desert is beautiful. There is "nothing" between towns. I was on a different bike that got far better fuel mileage than the Valk. With the stretches of open road that run for miles and miles you will be tempted to run at 80-90 mph. You will burn through fuel at that speed. When I was making the run I was thinking about the same ride on a Valk. I would carry at least 1 gallon of gas. Two each one gallon jugs of gas  (positioned for balance) would not be an unreasonable consideration. The summer temps will likely be grueling. There was a thread a week or so ago about riding in hot weather. Read and heed.  

I did see one Utah State Trooper and one Nevada State trooper in the respective boondocks. I don't know how forgiving they are as far as speed goes. I ran 80 most of the time in the open spaces. I would hazard a guess they are looking for the guys blasting through the desert at 100 mph or more.

Not familiar with I-15 south of jct 50. There is gas-food-lodging in Scipio.

I wouldn't leave home without a tire plug kit and a air pump of sorts. A person could easily become buzzard bait out there, especially in the summer.

I have no knowledge to share with regards to Hwy 93.  Desert is desert. The wide open spaces are probably the same. Unforgiving.

what Sheets said.......Mark and I did Hwy 50 a couple of years ago...get gas in every town...rather you need it or not.....it is a great experience....the loneliest hwy in America.....nothing out there...not a fence post an animal....but beautiful....enjoy...

Thanks for the replies.  We will do US 50 from Canon City, CO to Carson City, NV on the way to Yosemite, so I should have good info on that part.  We have done the part from Green River, UT to the junction with I-15.  Will be riding the Wing Trike & pulling a trailer.  Usually get about 25 mpg.  I will have 2  1 gal cans but don't want to fill them unless it seems likely the extra gas will be needed. (like from Delta to Ely)  This will be on the way back.  Want to go from Fallon, NV to St. George, UT & not too sure about gas on US 93 & beyond.  Stan

You shouldn't have major problems with gas.  As others have said, just fill up at every opportunity.  Even the worst stretches, Delta to Ely has gas at the state line about halfway, and Ely to St George has gas in Pioche and probably Panaca.  That's probably the worst stretch, Ely - Pioche about 110 miles and according to AAA Trip Tik no gas between them!  At 25 mpg thats a bit over 4 gal.  If you hit strong winds, you might have some trouble.  Probably the only stretch I'd fill the cans up.

Only ever ran U S 50 in a big truck. That being said I made sure my tanks-300 gallons-were full before I ventured on across that desolate and primal landscape. Find a wide spot and pull off the highway proper and if you pay attention after you shut down your engine you might see dinosaurs. If you can't actually see them you can fer real and fer certain imagine them in that landscape. What everyone else has said-DO NOT pass up a fuel stop and keep the spare cans fairly full. Would LOVE to make that ride on my Valkyrie.  RIDE SAFE.

Before I went out there the first time a friend told me weren't nothing out there-what I failed to realize was how cursed much of nothing was REALLY there!!  RIDE SAFE.

Thanks all for the info & tips!!  Looks like it is doable as long as I don't pass up any gas stops.  As far as the heat goes, we carry lots of water & have evap vests.  We have done a lot of hot weather riding & definitely know about hydration & keeping covered.  Again, thanks.  Stan

Forgot to mention that I had downloaded  "A Princess of Mars" and "John Carter of Mars" to my android. Ideal listening when riding on the edge of nowhere.

During the trip I made I also rode NV Hwy 375. Saw a sign stating no gas for 135 miles. They meant it. It was good to be on the ST1300 with 7.2 gallons of fuel.

If you are in to collecting souvenir ride pins and such, at your first stop for gas on either end of Nevada ask for a little booklet called the "Hwy 50 survival guide". There is a brief history of each town you go through as you cross Hwy 50. These are available at most gas stations, motels, restaurants. Each town you stop for gas or grits you ask the merchant if they will stamp your booklet representing the respective town to validate your passage. I think you need 5 stamps of 8 possible; then you send the post card portion to the Nevada Dept. of Tourism. You will receive a couple of pins that say "I survived hwy 50" and "I rode mine" (assuming you checked the motorcycle box on the mail-in portion). Towns to get the survival guide pamphlet and corresponding stamps: Carson City - Dayton - Fernley - Fallon - Austin - Eureka - Ely - Baker (the store at the Hwy 50 Nevada/Utah State line).

We traveled 2-up each direction. We each had our individual guide booklet to get stamped. We both received the "pins" as evidence of our journey.  A little memento to remind you of your excursion through no mans land.

Stan, 50 is one of my all time favorite roads.... Lots to see!!!!!Beautiful country...  but there will not be a powerline or even a fence post for MILES at a stretch ...  Longest section was around 120 miles.  and most towns with gas are around 90 miles apart as you come up out of the valleys into the rift....... don't miss a fillup in each town ... ya won't make it to the next one..LOL

Sheets-- Thanks for that tidbit.  I will be sure we get those.  And get the stamps.  Mark--Yeah the Trike 2 up with a trailer is a real gas hog, but we still enjoy.  Got 46 mpg     on the red/white Valk the other day just tooling around the mountains.  Never got above 60 mph.

What to look/ask for...

They stamp the respective page of the town you are in, plus the part you mail in with all stamps in the same place.
