Patrick

GM closes 14 US plants to build 11 new plants in China only to have one blow up today and kill 68 people.

cma1

huh ? don't see that anywhere ? googled gm plant explosion, got one july 1st that killed one person. where you hearing this ?

Skinhead

Ok, So I read (skimmed really) the article and where does it say this is a GM plant?

"An explosion killed at least 71 people and injured more than 200 at a factory in China that makes wheels for US carmakers, including General Motors, state media said, as the country suffered its worst industrial accident in a year."

Unless I missed something, this is a supplier to GM among other US Automakers.

Patrick

The initial report I heard was that of a GM parts plant shortly after the explosion happened. Apparently its a wheel plant in which GM was one of the major customers and the explosion was caused by excessive dust.

o.k. I read the story, did you see the part about the ford thunderbird plant that exploded in the same town and killed 120.

I saw a thunderbird broadside a mustang one day, nothing left but horsecrap and feathers, i'll bet them feathers came from that Chinese feather factory

???????????????????????

this is all researched and investigated before I would ever post it here. :uglystupid2:

regardless of just a supplier of GM car tires or not,  the fact remains that GM is shipping jobs to China and opening plants and suppliers of their vehicles' parts in China very agressively.  MORE so than most people think.

GM meaning now Government Motors will soon be CM = China Motors.  Wait and see.

The entire GM and Chrysler bailout by the Govt. was a joke.  I wanted to do cash for clunkers but the 1-800# I called the people were idiots and couldn't tell me if the old clunker I had qualified for the 2500 or so trade in value.  Great idea, but horrible follow up and dealers were clueless as well.

It is my understanding that the Chinese government will not allow you to sell vehicles in China unless you 1 open an assembly plant in China, 2 the plant is majority owned by the Chinese Government, 3 you turn over all prints/documents related to manufacture/engineering.

This allows them to steal our designs and technology.  Talk about fair trade!

All manufacturers are complying to tap into the HUGE China market.

Friendsville, TN - Troy, MI

Patrick

At one time when a news agency stated Explosion in China at GM parts factory one would think that an explosion in China at a GM parts factory had just occurred. Apparently this can't be trusted anymore.
I still haven't been able to determine whether GM had any % of ownership in this plant yet.

More GM for sure than other mfgs:  General Motors is becoming China Motors

It's a crying shame that the billions in bailout money only a few short years ago and this is how GM repays the American taxpayers.

My .02 cents:  I'd rather buy a Hyundai/Kia 60% made in Korea vs. a GM 90% made in China even though still most of the American public is still brainwashed that the Big 3 (Ford, Chrysler, GM) are still 'American' made.

I buy the best quality and reliable vehicle and what fits my needs best bang for my buck every single time, or so I hope anyways.

Yup, sure is hard to find an American vehicle today.
The Corvette is American [ has some 'foreign' parts like all vehicles do, but, is as American as can be today].

Most pick-ups are made [ or at least assembled] here now/again.

I just hate what GM has done to the American public with the bailout money. At least Chrysler and Ford have/are paying all the monies back with interest. Ford was in on the bailout, they were just smarter about how it was written and taken.

I had a '65 GTO only because I couldn't find a '64 tri-power ragtop[ still looking for one of those thats affordable]. And, I think I'll keep my 2 American [ one is definitely all American] bikes until I die.

cma1

they are not to be found under 70K, but remember, a 65 GTO was merely a tempest with a $65.00 option called the GTO option.

find your car as a tempest, not as hard to find, rebuild a good 389, also plentiful in the yards, as they used the heck out of it for years, slap on a set of carbs, and viola' you have a home grown GTO. it won't bring 70K at barrett Jackson, but it will make you a super driver.

While "American" companies are shutting down US factories and opening 'em outside the US, "Japanese" companies are opening factories in the US. So who's really an "American" company now vs. a "Foreign" company afterall, when 7 of the top 10 "Most made in the USA" vehicles are from "foreign" companies???

It's easy to tell which is which.  Just follow the money.  Where is the base operations located?  Which country has the home office?  That's where the majority of profits go.

Not that simple. The profits go to the shareholders, wherever and whoever they are. The location of the home office means nothing anymore.

Besides, if you want to look at it that way, the home office for Toyota in America is now 15 miles from me (Or being moved there.) so I'll take that over a "home office" in Detroit any day.

But that just doesn't matter, the profits go to the share holders, not the "home office".

You make it sound like the share holders take all the money and run. I'm pretty sure that is not what you mean. ???
The share holders do get their "share" but as we all know, collectively, Billions of dollars go into the pockets of the few at the top.  ;)
The profits these people make, (CEO's, Top Executives and down the line), even when the the company is failing, it ain't peanuts. :o
Besides the Millions they get, they also own tons of shares worth more Billions, yet they are "too big to fail."

BTW, the misconception that the auto makers were "bailed out" on the tax payers dime, resulted in large windfalls to us tax payers. :)
The automakers paying off their their debt ahead of time, brought Billions in profits to the nation's coffers. ;)
Not too bad for a government "bail out," I'd say. The risk paid off  a handsomely. :-X

The facts disagree with this statement.

QuoteTaxpayers recouped about $39 billion of the $50.1 billion pumped into GM in late 2008 and 2009 as the Bush and Obama administrations tried to save the car maker from collapse after years of mismanagement brought to a head by a crippling credit crisis and economic recession.

...

Despite the $11 billion loss on the GM bailout, the Treasury Department was quick to point out that it has recovered a total of $432.7 billion on all investments under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) – including the sale of its shares in AIG – compared to $421.8 billion disbursed. Treasury said it will continue to wind down the remaining investments"in a manner that balances maximizing the taxpayer's return on investments with the speed of our exit."

Oops.  Somehow the liberal media has convinced you that the 11 billion loss by GM, as per Serk's, link, is a "large windfall" to taxpayers.  Not sure how that works, but the gov't does that type of accounting all the time, which is why we are TRILLIONS in debt.

I really do not think it will.  The masses have found out that they can vote themselves benefits.  As of now, over 50% get some sort of benefits.  I think we will just go on amassing huge debt, until one day we have another depression.  It will make the 09 collapse look like good times.

At some point in the future, we will have a LOT of inflation, because of all the trillions in money pumped into the economy since 09.  All that money is what is boosting WallStreet stocks, yet leaving all us behind.

Could be this year, next year, or several years down the road, but it will come.

Yup, that was/is my point.
We're living a phony economy. How much money are we printing daily ?
Almost 18 trillion in debt. 7 of which has been added in the last 5 years alone.
8 billion a day just in interest. Which is not going to anyone or anything in this country.
Think the Great Depression was bad ? Unless we can get an administration that actually understands economics, I think bad times are coming. I'm hoping I'm wrong and this gets fixed, but, I'm not too optimistic.

I have respect for political converts. Those like Reagan, Stossel, Miller, Silver, Voigt, etc that were once far left liberals that finally 'saw the light' and became conservatives I have respect for. Here's one:

Quote
An explosion at a factory in China has killed at least 69 people, according to Chinese state media.

Another 150 people were injured in the blast on Saturday morning in Kunshan, a city in the eastern province of Jiangsu near Shanghai.

Workers in the factory were producing parts for cars for US companies including General Motors, state media said.

Here's one about GM asking for a new supplier now:

http://www.latinpost.com/articles/18514/20140803/gm-general-motors-china-explosion.htm

QuoteAlthough not affiliated directly with GM, the explosion happened at the Zhongrong Metal Products Co. Ltd. plant in the Chinese city of Kunshan in the Jiangsu province. Dicastal works with Zhongrong who according to the company website supplies wheels to GM and other car companies.
