Since I was at a stopping point with my work and my shop happens to be equipped with just about every solvent known to man, I decided to give my bike a wipe when I noticed all those scuffs where I grab the kickstand with my toe. I tried oven cleaner....no effect. For those that don't know, it's what I use to remove old hand lettering and/or pin stripping from vehicles. I then progressed to mild solvents with no satisfaction until I broke out the xylol/xylene. Removed it so easy it was disgusting. No effects to the chrome. Bug and tar remover might work but I didn't try that. Hope this will be of some help to y'all. Later.....G

I used White Diamond polish.  It got 99% of the shoe residue off of the pipe.

The only reason it didn't get the remaining 1% is my arm gave out before I finished.  I'll get that other 1% someday.   ;)

btw.....what is xylol/xylene and where to get it?
I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Valkjerk

You can get it at any hardware store, Wally World, Lowes, etc.. Requires no arm strength and removes very quickly. You're gonna luv it.

Just get a can of Goof Off, wet a rag and it's gone in seconds.

I heard SOS pads work great for this also.

Misfit

I do t think I would use an SOS pad , but a magic eraser pad does wonders.  :cooldude:

I dont use any abrasive material on my bike unless I have to. Haven't had to yet. My wheels are going to get polished and either clear powder coated or coated in a translucent black to look like black chrome this winter. We started using a new powder coater at work and they told me they would do my wheels for 100 bucks since we do so much business with them.

No use  0000 steel wool and auto polish together.
SOS pads are to course and will scratch. 0000 steel wool will not scratch it.

Gavin_Sons

I thought 0000 steel wool was square cut where sos pads are round like wire therefore having less chance of scratching. Just another thing I have heard through the grapevine.

I've always used 0000 steel wool........not saying it's the best thing to use......but it works.

4-O steel wool will not scratch if you are careful, if you scrub hard, it will scratch/haze.

That is why you use a cleaner/polish or cleaner/wax with it.

Valkjerk

..........or you could use xylene/xylol and the $hit just runs off and one wipe. What is wrong with all you hardheads? Why do you insist on taking a chance with s-wool or any other abrasive? I'm offering a viable solution.

.......or you could get some very fine steel wool and some cleaner polisher.......just thought I'd beat all y'all to the punch. Do whatever the hell you want. It's your motorcycle. LOL LOL

Can also use a grinder with a cutting wheel for those really tough spots that dont want to come off.  ;D

No one is pissing on your solution, but it may not work for every situation.
It worked for you and that is great, and we have taken note of that.
Cool it dude!

Careful with that stuff.  Xylene is a potent organic solvent.  It'll rot your liver out given enough exposures and inhalations.  Glove up and have a breeze at your back in an open area, please. :)

after you get the pipes cleaned with the xylene you can pour a cup of in in your gas and clean out the carbs and anything else it touches,, will also make the octane rating go up,, we used to run it in our race cars..
