What is everyones favorite aftermarket Fairing.

I have looked at Woodys and the Batwing.

1998 STD with over 100K miles on her.

Looking to put a Fairing on or possible if I could find 1 an OEM windscreen.

Your input would be helpful.

I would like to not relocate the gauges if possible.

Hoppe if you can find one ( good luck with that ) . Works with all the Tourer mounting hardware and windshield. Woody worked for Hoppe back in the day and made this fairing. If I was lookin' for one today I'd give my bike a Woody.

I thought about a fairing for quite a while after riding 12oo Goldwings for 20 years. When I finally went and did it, the Memphis Shades Batwing was my choice. After paint and riding it for mucho miles, it fits my needs well. it is a shell only and has no radio options, but with the Spoiler windshield, it's easy to install and inexpensive to won.

Woodys, Woodys, Woodys.     However, it depends on what you want. 

If you just want a shell with no stereo, then there's options such as Memphis Shades. 

However, if you want tunes, I'm obviously in favor of the Woodys.   

Don't be afraid to relocate the guages either.  At first, I didn't think that I'd like them up on the bars either, however, after I put them there, I really like them there better than I did in the OEM position.  I can see them better. 

Another consideration is that the Woodys fairing is fiberglass.  If you ever damage it, it will be much easier to get someone to repair it as opposed to a plastic fairing such as the Wide Open Custom fairing.

My choice was the Memphis Shades batwing with quick removal hardware. I also added the Baker wings. I find that combination works great for me, no buffeting even when using my flip up helmet in the open position when smoking my cigars. I did modify the mount a bit in order to raise the entire Batwing about 1/2" on the mounts in order to get just the correct height for me. The modification was to the position of the aluminum bracket where it attaches to the faring. I added the lower wind deflectors that attaches to the Batwing on either side. This required cutting those deflectors to fit over my turn signal lights. No changes to gauge or light positions. I have excellent air control now with the option of more cooling by turning out the Baker wings. It's surprising how much the Baker wings help in reducing buffeting.

The stereo isn't much of a reach at all.





However, most stereo head units come with a remote these days.  You can use the remote instead of reaching to the stereo.  

Other's have wired a wired remote for their stereo.....Jimmytee I think did his like that.  

I mounted (velcro) my remote on a Ram mount and control the head unit with it instead of reaching for the stereo.  





I mounted one of those cheap little license plate tag lights on it so I can see it at night.

The Woodys fairing will take any three hole standard Harley shield from any manufacture (Memphis Shades three hole shields are a tad off and are not a direct fit).  I got my shields from Fastaire. 

I have three shields that I use.  Two with the re-curve and one straight. 

Most of the time, I rotate between the 7" (which is the one in the pic above) and a 10".  The 7" stays on most of the time....and the 10" when the weather starts to cool off and for the winter months. 

Both the 7" and the 10" are in light tint. 

Back when I ordered my fairing, Glenn told me that a 10" shield is the closest to the OEM Hondaline shield.  I look just over the 10".

I also have a 4" in solid black straight shield (also from Fastaire) that I use sometimes when it's really hot and I want all the air I can get.  The 4" gives me air direct to the upper chest and to my face. 

The 4" comes right even with the top  of my tri-pouch.

On the Fastaire site, straight/basic shields are pretty cheap.  You can buy several and experiment. 

Also, it's really easy and quick to change out shields.  You can litterally change out a shield in a matter of a couple minutes.

An HD batwing fairing from a mid-60s to mid-80s FLH adapts fairly easily.  If you shop right, you can find them on eBay for pretty cheap.  I bought my first one for $60 plus shipping and just bought another for about $150, delivered.

You have to enlarge the headlight opening, but that's not hard using a side grinder or Dremel.  I used my Memphis Shades windshield brackets as templates to cut new ones, and married the bottom half of those to the top half of the HD mounts so that the MS quick connects (old type) would work.  

What I like about the HD fairing is that it's larger than the Memphis Shades batwing and fits the look of the bike better, at least in my opinion.  It also provides  more weather protection, especially for your hands in cold weather.

As shown below, this is only the shell, with Long Ride Shields re-curve windshield.




I'm going to try and buy an HD inner fairing and see if I can relocate gauges and install audio as well.

I put a Harley Street Glide Batwing on mine and really like it.  It takes some work to get it fit and mounted.  But if you are handy, it isn't too big of a deal though.  And there is lots of info available online for doing this project.  You can buy new aftermarket inner and outer shells on ebay for about $300 total.  I used Memphis Shades universal fork clamps from Dennis Kirk for about $50, and fabbed up some brackets to support it.  I also had to fab up a little plate to lower headlight a little and move it forward a bit and as mentioned, the headlight opening needed some cutting with a dremel to make it work.  Then I painted the outer shell myself using paint I had left over from my saddlebag project.  On the inner shell, the Valk gauges drop right into the 2 gauge holes and fit perfectly, and Harley sells little caps to cover the small gauge holes since I don't have any gauges yet.  I also had seen where someone filled those with small tweeter speakers, so that's an idea.  Then there are a couple other small items like a speedo cable extender and a odometer reset cable that are relatively cheap.  Not counting the radio or speakers, I probably have about $400-$450 in it counting paint.

The only problem I've had was that the speedo cable exits the speedo on the bottom so it presses against the radio and bends towards the side of the radio where I routed the cable.  As a result, it has caused the speedo to slowly rotate a little so it looks like it is a little crooked in the opening.  Not bad and purely aesthetic.  If I had bought the longer speedo cable extension, I could have routed it towards the end (front) of the radio rather than to the side and this problem probably would go away.  I'll probably do that one of these days...or maybe not.

Like I said, I really like this fairing.  I will say, though, that the aftermarket inner and outer shells do not match up as cleanly around the edge as my buddy's actual Street Glide fairing.  The outer shell overlaps the inner shell a bit and leaves a little gap around the edge.  It isn't bad and is completely acceptable given what I paid for the parts...except for the fact that I must not have prepped the edge good enough for the paint, so it is peeling a little there.  But that's my fault.  If I were to do it again...or if this one gets damaged for some reason, I might try to find actual Harley parts rather than aftermarket.  But that's just me.
