WTH my PC has started playing GOOGLE CHROME audio ads all by itself

..

I had Netflix streaming open and gmail. Nothing else open on the PC.

EDIT after fixing the problem.

This happened after I installed and uninstalled Google Chrome.

If you are a Chrome user and you think maybe your PC is running a tad slower NO MATTER if you use Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Mozilla you should check for the same little bots.

You've got some malware going on most likely...

Few tools to give a look at to see if it can be found and removed:

Ad-Aware (Free should be fine) - http://www.lavasoft.com/landing/free_pro.php?uid=1009709

Spybot - Search and Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/

Many many MANY others, but between those two I've cleaned up many relatives computers...

Never ask a geek 'Why?',just nod your head and slowly back away...

Thanks

I use Ad Aware, Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, Windows Defender and Windows Malicous thingy.

I'll run spybot and see if that reveals anything.

look in your ad and remove programs in the control panel and remove anything that you dont want..usually on those ads there is a water mark or something like that , that will tell you what it is,, then remove that one..

Lokk in my "ad"?

What is my ad and where can I find it?

I've used spybot plus the others I mentioned and I just got 2 ads playing. One on top of the other.

Grrrr.

Add Remove Programs

To remove some possible confusion finding it, try going to Start -> Run (Or search or anything there you can type in) and typing in appwiz.cpl and hitting enter.

Do be careful you don't remove things all willy nilly though in there...

I try to keep my PC clean. Did an unintsall sweep 3 days ago. I'll go back and take another look.

In the meantime I'd like to be at the front of the line wanting to beat the crap out of the prats who write this crap.

Another one I have used to get rid of some stubborn stuff is Super Anti Spyware free version.

Malwarebytes, Anti malware is the best I have used at cleaning up a computer. Free versions is available and works great.

..

Started again.

It's music, Queen - My best friend.

And then under that it's an ad for Verizon wireless or booking.com. It's almost like I'm listening to a TV Broadcast. The only web site I have open is this one.

And the bloody thing is repeating itself. This time it's Queen without an ad, just the sound of a studio audience laughing at something.

It started to repeat again and then cut itself short.

Now it seems to have stopped.
Don't go near the haunted PC.  >:(

If you close the web browser entirely, does it stop?

And... which web browser are you using?

Now I've got Martha Stewrt audio giving me instructions on how to do potato printing. Not an ad.

Now a woman talking about how popular chalk boards are. Not an ad.

When I close all web pages the sound does continue.

Now it's stopped again.

I use Internet Explorer. My PC is Vista and doesn't like Chrome.

Adaware is up to date

CC Cleaner is up to date

Malawarebytes is up to date

Spybot is up to date

Windows Defender is up to date

Hold down the CTRL key, and the SHIFT key and press escape at the same time.

A window should pop up that says "Windows Task Manager"

To to the Processes tab, make sure the "Show processes from all users" option or something like that is checked (Been a while since I've used Vista, it should be similar)

Look for an "iexplore.exe" process. Click it, right click on it and select "End Process" (This will terminate the browser, so make sure you don't have a multi page reply typed up or anything) If the sound is still happening, look for a "FlashPlayerPlugin" or something like that process, and terminate it...

If it's still playing you can just try terminating processes until through process of elimination you find the culprit (Or crash the computer ;) )

It shouldn't be possible to cause any permanent damage by doing this, no matter how bad you mess things up, a simple reboot should get everything back up and running again.

It sounds like you might have a minimzed or hidden tab that's streaming something.

Now I've got an ad for ABC tonight for a show called Kristella?

Now I've got some scat music playing - I like it.

..

As I did the iexplore action a burst of rockabilly played.

Now I've got some Scott Joplin playing.

NO I HAVEN'T TAKEN ANY DRUGS - LEGAL OR ILLEGAL.  :D

Ugh I'm an idiot, can't believe I didn't think of this earlier...

do the Start -> Run (Or whereever you can type something) thing and type in: sndvol and hit enter

That should bring up your volume controls and mixer. You might hafta scroll left and right. You should have seperate volume controls for every program that can make sound. Scroll around and see if you can see EQ activity for one of the programs that matches the sounds you're hearing. If you can't see anything play with the volume controls for each individual program and try to isolate which program is the source of the sounds that way.

BINGO!!!!

There's 4 Google Chrome sliders that will play weird crap.

How do I nuke them?

The simplest way is a "Nuke it from orbit" approach and, if you don't use Chrome, uninstall it...

Fire up appwiz.cpl and just uninstall Chrome. Can always reinstall it later (And hope whatever it is that's firing up the streaming content doesn't carry over) if ya' need it...

Chrome previously uninstalled.

I've clicked the sliders I don't want to hear from so now I've got a red x thru the little speaker symbol.

Thank you very much for your help  :cooldude: :cooldude: :cooldude:

In the past couple of days I've rebooted untold times  :o

Since I killed those pesky sliders my PC has regained its pep as well.

Bloody sneakly Google bastids.

I would like to get rid of the sliders.

All the solutions I've found and tried will not remove the auto audio ads.

I'm going to do a system restore and see if that will kill the little buggers .

Hey Brit look on the bright side at least you can do something  about them on your computer because tv is getting to be a joke with all the ads. Besides its karma for driving a chips ad bus  ;D

Motor home if you don't mind  :)

Paid TV, what is that?

I have an indoor antenna for local channels.

Netflix streaming and DVD

Youtube has so much real content apart from all the ooh, aah, eek, ha ha clips.

I can go to a local bar if I really, really need to watch a team of steroided athletes exert themselves for a team total of about 3 minutes during a game that takes 3 hours .
