You can raise Dogs just like Kids ; good bad or ugly. They learn what we teach. I have had many Dogs in my 80 years and never a bad one. Kids, I don`t know ! Kidding, all my three are great ! They think they are in Will !  ;)

this march will be 4 yrs since I had to put down my 70lb red nose. He was 16 yrs 4 months old.
still miss him. still laugh when I think about the stuff he use to do.
when walking him, any kids that came up to him he immediately started guarding them, didn't matter if he knew them or not.

I've never had a dog .  When I was a kid, we visited my relation's farm.  They had two chows.  Both man and wife talked baby talk to these chows, gave them hugs, and generally treated them like babies.

i was afraid of those SOB chows. Couldn't trust them.

'm no expert but it seems to me that dogs need a master and not baby talk, etc.  Since then I've seen it more than once.  It's generally not the breed, it's how they're raised.

Am i wrong?

I just adopted a rescue pitt from the NYC needle this weekend- literally an 11th hour reprieve from the governor. They found him chained to a park becnh freezing and emaciated.

Xavier has met the cat (Chloe) and couldn't care less.

So far, the best temperment of an animal in the Marinakos household...other than Ulysses (LAb / Sheppard / Collie mix) we had put down right before Christmas (he was 14 with a cancerous tumor on his spleen).

This guy is a cuddle bug...walks well on a leash. He has some learning to do with not getting on the couches... but otherwise, a great 3 year old (ish) Pitt.
I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6

if your not the alpha in the relationship the dog will be alpha. when you have the dog calling the shots it can be bad.

I have always gotten along with all dogs.

Only exception was a neighbor's giant male Shar Pei.  He was never leashed, and was entirely uninterested in ever becoming friends.  We left each other alone, but when I mowed the lawn, I had the distinct impression he knew exactly where the (unmarked) property line between our houses was, and if I passed over it in any way, there would be a bloody stump from the part of my body that did cross over.

Two gynormous Turkish sheepdogs cornered me out on the Anatolian Plain (with no trees in sight for 100 miles).  I understood that I was not to move (or maybe even breathe) until their shepard came up, then they changed into two adorable gynormous puppies.  (They wore steel collars with spikes for protection against wolves.)

When in the service, stationed in San Francisco, the wife and I raised Doberman's and a couple of Pit Bulls.

The Doberman were very Protective 99% of the time.

The Pit's were protective IF & only if someone came within 50 feet of any of the family and never stopped walking toward the family member.    They would get between you and the family member.

They never barked, growled or showed their teeth, but you knew dang good an well, you were not welcome and you best backoff, or I might get ugly with ya.

One of our Doberman's was the boss over the last daughter when she was born.

I put her down in the back yard one day and told the dog to watch her and not let her go past the gate.

Went in the house to get my glasses and I heard this ungodly blood curdling scream.    Almost tore the storm door off the hinges going out.

Got out far enough to see the dog pulling Valarie by her diaper back across the gate line.   As soon as she let go, Valarie was back over the line.     I intervened and took her up on the deck.   The dog laid across the top step so she couldn't get down the stairs.

One night she came home from being out with the girls, parked her car on the East Driveway, got out locked it and started towards the house.     The dog always staid outside till she got home for the evening.       This guy went to grab her and all he got was a mouthful of the dogs teeth.     I ran out, called him off of the guy, he got up to run and I told him to stop, he kept running, told the dog to get him and bring him back.      In the meantime the wife called 911 and they had a squad car on sight in less than 10 minutes.        Was never any trouble in this neighborhood since.

Between Doberman's and Pit Bull's I don't think you can find a more faithful protective animal.

Give me one of these breeds everyday if needed.

Pit Bulls are one of the sweetest breeds of dogs.  Wouldn't hurt a fly.

They all love children....right up until they rip their faces off.
I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you

Had a pit bull chase me back into my truck one night. Pulled in the driveway got out and was walking to the house when this dog came out of nowhere. It was about 2 in the morning. I ran back to the truck and jumped over the bed side. He was running all around the truck barking and growling. Luckly I had my glock on me, and he ate several rounds of 40.

Another time last winter I went out to my truck early one morning to start it so it wouldbe warm for when i left. Was bent over the seat starting it and turning the heat and fans on and turned around to a growling pit showing his teeth. Im always packin my gun so I slowly pulled it from the holster and drew a bead on his forehead when the owner started yelling at him. He backed down and ran to the owner. The owner apologized and I told him the dog wouldn't be so lucky next time and to keep his f****** dog tied up because if I seen it again it was a dead dog.

Sorry, not a pit bull lover.

I had a Pit when I was a kid and loved that dog and he loved me he was a protector to me and my brothers. All the neighborhood kids would play with him but he didnt care too much for strange adults. I too believe it is all in the way they are raised.

I tend to blame owners and not dogs.

It's funny how some of the worst dogs come from families with the worst kids.

In my heavy, anthill urban world, I also strongly believe in leash laws.

Gavin_Sons

I had a chow growing up, rescued her out of a ditch along with her 4 brothers and sisters. They got dumped by some piece of crap. Got them tamed down over a few weeks and gave them all away but "Nala" she was very protective over us boys. I remember the neighbor boy shoving my little brother down and she pounced him and stood on his chest growling. Thought she was gonna bite his face off. But she made her point and licked him. She would always stand between us and a stranger. I would always walk back behind the house to the creek and she would always be by my side. Sometimes lightly bite my hand while walking as if she was holding my hand.

I do think there are some great pit bulls, I have just had a couple bad encounters with them. Maybe I dont give them enough credit.

sosrry guys.....can't agree on this one....in the news every week....at least once a week......a pit bull is attacking someone and tearing them to pieces.    the breed needs to be annuialated.....JMHO

disagree 100% look and see how many of those were raised in a proper manner.  I have treated many dog bite patients over the years and only remember one being a Pit ,several Rotwielers (sp) and several mountain currs even a shepperd. And most of the patients were bitten by their own dogs

Totally agree. Every time a pit bull rips a kid apart the owner always says their dog is a marshmallow...every time. So many other choices out there. Why would anyone risk it with this breed. It's beyond me.

only problem is most of those stories are about mutts not pure breed dogs. news media uses the word "pit" to sell the news. its a know fact that the gang/drug members mix the dogs to make them meaner.
smaller dogs are always listed as the most biting dogs compared to larger dogs in the US

I like Pit bulls, my experience with the breed has been heartwarming. The Pits I have been exposed to are all exceptional with family and kids, and other breeds. I had the "all Pits are killers" mentality until I was exposed. My experience is they are wonderful, playful, loyal dogs. Big babies who love their families. I came close recently to bringing a pup home from a co-worker. Others expressed the Pit bull fear/mentality and I called my insurance company. They will drop my homeowners policy with what they call "aggressive breeds" They claim this is one of them. That's the only reason I didn't bring him home.
What do all the "aggressive breed" owners do? How do you get around that?
I see most Pits on Craigslist are from very poor/bad conditions (from their photos) and many are being "re-homed" because their apartment will not allow Pits. So many folks mass produce these dogs and they wind up getting recycled many times before finding a proper suitable home for them. This can certainly add to the problem, many non stable homes.
Long story short...I like them. My opinion will not erase all the horror stories about them.
If you can't be a good example: be a WARNING!!

LuLu does Pit rescue.
Pits get a bad rap.
Any time a mongrel or Boxer, or Bulldog bites someone, headlines scream "Pit Attack!" Without fail.
Terriers are by nature sweet and loyal.
We did have one that was abused and couldn't be trusted (may have been fed gunpowder), she had to be destroyed,
Dogs of ANY breed can be mean if abused.
To suggest Pits, as a breed, should be destroyed is plain ignorance.
In the past, the same has been said about German Shepherds, Bulldogs, and many other breed popular for protection at the time.
Pits are highly intelligent, loyal, and affectionate and is one of my favorite breeds.  :cooldude:

if an owner does not have papers proving that it is a pure breed, its a mutt as far as u are concerned. use "mixed breed dog", etc. no deception, no papers, no proof on the breed. don't offer any info to anybody. I had to write a letter to one insurance company once, never heard from them again. I brought up how do they know the type of dog I have, the dog is always in the house, or in a fenced backyard. their insurance person would have had to trespass onto my property to see the dog or peer into my house windows, then I told them how a dog protects the house at my expense from criminals and prevents insurance claims from break-ins, etc.,...

I never got around that. When I had Allie a Staffy and Shana a Rottweiler I just had them drop any coverage liability to them and the Ins Co was fine with it. I KNEW my dogs and wasn't concerned about them needing coverage.

PS- I won't get into the debate with people that go by stereotypes without facts. I'm done here

Ha ha ha ha.  so now I can't protect myself on my own property? Sorry but I nothing will pin me anywhere on my own property and survive it. Sorry if you don't like it, just the way I was raised.

Gavin_Sons

So tell me Xtracho, if someone tried to attack you at your own home would you protect yourself? I bet you wouldn't just stand there and let them stab you. Those teeth are a dogs weapon and they were not going to get sunk into my skin. If he would have ran away I would not have gone after him, but instead he decided to jump on my truck and try to get in. So yes I protected myself and got rid of the threat.

Xtracho

Surely I would protect myself and my family. Perhaps I misread the post and understood that you were in youur vehicle and the dog was outside the truck.

I was in the bed of the truck. Does it really matter where I was? Agressive dog on my property = dead dog. If you want your agressive dog (no matter the breed) to live, keep it in your house and off my property. I love dogs up to the point they try to eat me.

Jess from VA

I had a really aggressive dog go crazy trying to get over the chain link fence at my base quarters little back yard (wife there too, with her cat).  I yelled at him, and he got worse.  Then I whacked him with a broom a couple times and he went crazier showing lots of teeth and spit.  Then I ran in the house and got my Remington 870, racked it went after him, over the fence, and right down the middle of the street at high port arms (broad daylight).  He hit the road sprinting out of sight (and I went home).  I could have gotten in some trouble, but never heard a word about it.  My home, my rules.  Good size sheppard mix.
