Do you smell something ? (starter relay)

Kinda like plastic melting, yep I smell it too !  Teal bike loves to give me fair warnings so I did a little investigating today. Has anybody had the Caltric replacements for $6 work o.k. ? from partzilla it is $46. I also ordered a cheap relay that has a 4 pin harness pigtail, both from Amazon $12. total. I may clean this up to see if it is useable.

Here ya go. It's a new plug with some short wires to splice in. P/N 32110-ML8-305. Starter relay connector repair kit. This repair kit is made for a Goldwing, but will work in a Valkyrie. You may have to move one wire in the plug to make it match and work. $27.45 from Partzilla.

Good thing you smelled the warnings and were able to find the culprit comfortably from home :cooldude:
 Question: I've seen this happen to several others over the years. Is this something that can be prevented by inspecting/cleaning or when it's time to fry it's time regardless?
If you can't be a good example: be a WARNING!!

Some of the cheap relays won't work without switching the two heavy wires as the input is reversed.  Did that once.  Ended up getting one from pinwall cycle and switching back after it failed again.

John, how does one find these repair kits ? Usually I click on my model and all to see a breakdown of certain areas of the bike with good pictures to view. I tried to see a picture of this repair kit with no luck. On order regardless.
Doug, I think a routine inspection/cleaning and maybe some non corrosive dielectric grease will keep this meltdown in check. I am lucky to have found this before a road failure!
Terry, most guys have re-used the relay as no real damage there just needs a good cleaning. Interesting that the cheapo brands need reversed hook ups and don't last long, I will keep the $6 one for long trip emergency repairs only.

This was a factory problem from 97 to 99 ... In 2000 they add shield to keep the water out...
After I replace them , I fill them with RTV....  No more problems...
Have fixed about 8 of them like that...

Sixlow, as I recall, that's a kit for the same repair on the GL1200, '84-'87. You won't find it on a Valkyrie site but if you go to Google.com and type in the p/n, it comes up with all kinds of dealers where you can buy it....does that with any p/n and often tells you what it's for. Also, on Google you can often type in your problem and if you look far enough in the listings you can find a fix or a reference to one.  :cooldude:

I forget sometimes how handy Google can be, thanks.
Here is what I came up with for now, the red plug cut easily with a razor so I removed that melted quadrant and spiced in a spade connector for that terminal, they fit in together so all is well again, a test ride proved that,  a desmog also this weekend removed all this crap-ola. Thanks Gil for the Two Bros. kit, I would like to find another one for the I/S but have not had any luck locating one so a Red Eye will be my next choice. Teal will get a carb sync soon, I can't imagine it running any better but some better fuel mileage may be possible.
