What size oil filter?

Just read the owners manual, and it doesn't list a suggested oil filter.  Anyone have a list of compatible models?
Also, can someone confirm I don't have to remove the front lower cover to change the oil?  Book says yes, but I thought I read otherwise here.

I looked at the manual, having not gotten to a change interval yet so didn't know the answer, and then looked at the bike.

From what I can see, you could probably change the filter, and definitely drain the oil without removing the front cover.

Here's a picture of mine.



In the picture here, the drain bolt is on the left, and on the bike, looking from front to back it will be on the right.

As far as what filter to use, they recommend the "Honda Genuine Oil Filter" and when doing a google search for "Honda GL1800C Oil Filter Equivalent" I found http://parts.southernhonda.com/p/Honda__GL1800C/FILTER--OIL-TOYO-ROKI/54993681/15410-MFJ-D01.html That page gives a part number that supposedly fits our bikes. When you google that part number you can find several pages that have it listed. As with any internet purchase, choose wisely. Personally I'd pay the price for the filter from Honda so I knew I was installing the part engineered for my engine.

Of course Honda is going to recommend their own filters and oil. Why wouldn't they? Go here to learn about oil and filters.

I personally use Purolator Pure One PL14610 (3.25" long) and the PL14612 (2.5" long)
The PL14610 is more difficult to install with the lower cowling on, being that it is 3/4" longer. I plan on trimming the cowling in that area for easier removal and installation. I learned my lesson when I removed the lower cowling only to find that it was not necessary. Even though the longer filter was more difficult to work with, it wasn't impossible with the cowl in place. Can you say, "dremel!"

@steve : I changed the oil filter and didn't have to remove the cover. I bought it at the dealer's, why bother ? (in Paris anyway)

The bike uses the same filter as a Honda Civic 1.8L.  Just get the longer one.  That is what I do.

Here are a few that I know will fit. 

I like the 2.5" ones so that I can remove and replace without taking off the plastic engine cover on the front. 

The 3.25" filter may give more filter material surface area, but I find you probably have to remove the engine cover to get it off/on. 

Short filters that fit (2.5"):

Didn't have to remove any covers to change the oil, but then again I've learned (the hard way) from my Vulcan and now use this

I use an oversized PureOne PL14459 for my V1500. larger dia, same length as the original OEM which is just a little longer than the existing oem filter now provided by Honda.

Interesting... I wouldn't have thought that. 

Any idea what the benefit would be??  More volume is great, but only if it's in the sump (at least that's what I'd imagine).

a. the oil is part of the engine's cooling system, so more could mean a few degrees less in the crank case meeting the design operating temps.
b. more oil, means more additives to allow longer drain intervals.
c. too much oil in the sump is no good, crankshaft will aerate the oil, air doesn't lubricate, plus the drag reducing power and mpg.
so putting it all together the engine engineer needs so much oil to meet
a and b, but the correct amount violates c due to sump size, so larger oil filter to satisfy c.
