Speedometer Issues

I have a 99 Interstate
My speedometer stopped a few months ago, after reading several post I figured I need to replace my sensor but kept putting off spending the money then  few weeks ago it started working sporadically.  some rides it works fine, some off and on and some not at all.  When it does start working the radio volume gets louder.  I am thinking a ground somewhere?   Any clues?  I don't relish taking my ferring apart to trace wires.  Anyone already tackle this have any clues

There is a box on the lower left fork that has a small bolt that holds it on. See if that bolt is snug. It's a Phillips head. SNUG NOT hammered tight! RIDE SAFE.

The speed sensor for the speedo controls the automatic volume control for the radio. If the speedo isn't working, the volume stays steady, at the set level. When the sensor starts working, the radio turns up the volume, to that set level. Replace the sensor!

Take the sender at the wheel apart and clean the pick up. Mine went out on the way home from InZane in June and that's all it took to fix it

I had the same problem, I just bought one on eBay and replaced it.  It has worked fine since.

Thanks for all the advice.  I took the sensor off and took it apart, found the little wheel inside was hanging up and not turning freely.  sprayed some cleaner on it followed by some good old WD40 which freed the wheel.  Took it for a ride today and froze my butt off but the speedo works fine.

Take the sender at the wheel apart and clean the pick up. Mine went out on the way home from InZane in June and that's all it took to fix it

Must have been something in that SD weather...mine cut out on the way home from Inzane as well - first time in 15 years. Cleaned it up and it's worked fine since.
