Have you checked the speedo cable to see if it's broken?

If your trip is working every now and then, I'd guess that your speedo probably pops up too when you're not looking.
For me it was simply the speedo cable. I removed it and tried to spin it from the bottom with a small flathead screwdriver. It was bound up somewhere in the middle, and I couldn't pull the metal cable out from the plastic sleeve.
If you can spin your front wheel, with that cable removed, you can see if the speedometer gear is spinning with the wheel revolutions.
I bet you'll find it's either that gear box on the front wheel (new, about $80, but plenty of used ones on ebay) or the speedometer cable (I paid less than $20 on Amazon).

If you have an interstate you bo not have a cable rather a wire. The sensor at the wheel sends a signal. Check the sensor at the front wheel and the connector at the speedometer module In the fairing. Make sure your connection is clean and properly inserted.

Changed sensor didn't notice there was a shim in the old one put it in with the new one and works

Right. I didn't notice he had the IS in the profile pic. I have a standard, so I'm glad you came in with the answer for that bike.

I didn't realize he was talking about an IS either. Different animal.
