Fender mount brackets done.

Just need to pick up the flat stock I'll be using to make the braces. I think it will work out fine. Haven't decided if I want to rivet or bolt(button heads) the braces to the fender. I only have a pop rivet tool but don't feel that would really be stout enough. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Left side bracket, nut welded on the back side. Also showing the new axle without the snapped thread tap in it. 


Welded a nut on the backside for the right side bracket.


Full view of the right side mount. The refill plug is kinda ugly, guess I'll give it a shot of paint as well.

Steel 3/16 pop rivet would probably hold it. I have hung a lot of weight on them. Just a bitch to set with a hand riveter.

That would be an excuse to go buy an air driven one, except it wouldn't get used very often so be hard to justify. Not sure I have any rivets that large, have to take a look, then maybe go visit Jeff at his Home Depot. Not his dept. but still a chance to bug him for awhile.  

Just checked....HD and Lowes are extremely pricey, as is Northern Tool. However, Harbor Freight has one for $39.99 which would be withing reach, or their 17" long handled unit for $20. Going to take a look at the hydraulic/air unit, sure would make things easier and I'm an advocate for "easy."

I bought one of these a few months ago, hand operated but even pulls 1/4 steel rivets easily.

I'm thinking maybe three rivets in a triangle, two at the top and one centered below them. I'll take a look at HF's version of their 17" hand operated one which looks very similar to yours, might be an alternative for the air unit.

Cut six inches off the back end of the fender, I think it looks better this way.






When I get the brace material this week, I'll be able to center the fender before making it a solid mount.
