When changing oil, do you just drain, or tip back and forth...

A quick question about when you drop the oil and filter... Do most of you just leave it on the side stand and drain what comes out? Or the way I have done it on other bikes, I would sit on bike and sit it up level, then lean back and forth and try get all old oil out I can... I'm not sure if it was on the new valk that someone may of said they don't get much more out when you do the tip back and forth, or if it was somewhere else. Anyway, any info is appreciated.

I change mine right after I get home from work, or ride around the block, or whatever
to heat the oil up first, put the bike in a chock, pull the plug and come back in 10 or 15
or whatever minutes it takes for the drizzle to stop.

I bet the only way we'd ever get "that last drop" of old oil out would be to change
the oil, go around the block a few times, and then change it again...

I tried tipping it the last oil change, didn't really see any more come out.  I just play patience: I do not start the bike, remove the plug and just let it drain for however long it takes to drain.  Everyone brags about how fast they can do an oil change, "I do it in 15 minutes!", mine take much longer but I always get, within small sections of a quart, what user manuals state what a 'full teardown fill' should be.  So I'm happy.

Engine is always warmed up before I start an oil change.
I remove the plug, pull the filter and let it empty into the catch can while on the side stand for about 10 min. Then yes, I sit on the bike and hold it straight for a little bit then back on the side to get the last drops of old oil.
Re-install the plug, put a little oil in the new filter, screw it on & refill with 3-1/2 qt's then add just enough slowly until full.

Since the oil drain plug is pretty much in the center of the crank-case, I put a small block of wood- 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch under the kickstand- just enough to make the bike sit almost upright but not so far as you worry about it tipping over. And as others have stated, the oil should be warm for it to drain better. You will never get every drop out. Make sure you take the dip-stick out to allow the oil to drain freely. If you are obsessed about getting every drop out and most of you will think this is crazy- as long as the engine is cool, I have blown into the dipstick whole and got an ounce or two more out. I know I am opening my self up for some real abuse from you guys, but what the hell!

How much extra do you have to add to "full"?  By not starting the bike I have to add about 4 & 1/4 quarts or so.

Aww, you must really love your bike!    If your wife or significant other ever catches you, you can say that your bike died and you are giving it mouth to mouth resuscitation!

Goldstar903- No problem, I was hoping for a wise crack or 2- and yes I really do love my bike. I have been with my wife since 1978, and sometimes I get more pleasure from giving my Valk some tender loving care rather than my wife!  Ha Ha!

How much extra do you have to add to "full"?  By not starting the bike I have to add about 4 & 1/4 quarts or so.

I do re-start the motor and check for possible leaks.
Let it cool a few minutes and recheck oil level again, never needed to add more than another 1/4 qt
