The Polk Audio speakers are they water-proof ?

Can someone please post the part #'s for both front and rear ( are is it the same speaker for front and rear ? ) I checked the link Jess posted but cannot answer my questions with his link.

I asked someone at Crutchfield about them and she didn't say they were waterproof only referred to them as "marine grade" used in boating and other outdoor applications. I took it to be the same speaker model front and rear. I think the model # was DS-501 if I'm not mistaken. Looking around on the net looks like around $50 bucks a pair

Joe, the speakers are Polk DB-501.  I put these in my bike both front and rear.  Yes, same size, but you have to do a little work on both the front and rear speaker enclosures.  They're marine grade, which I take it to mean they can stand a little water here and there, but not being just soaked time and again.  They are a 100% improvement in sound over the OEM speakers, both in sound quality and volume.  I had them blaring some on the Shiloh trip and some of the others could hear them while we were stopped in traffic, if that tells you anything.

I'm not familiar with the Polk speakers, but know they make great stuff.  I went with 4" Alpine speakers all around.  When I put the speakers in, I left out the enclosures in the front.   My fairing always seemed to amplify noises/rattles every bump I hit so I covered the entire inside of the fairing and the back sides of the speaker panels with DynaMat.  When I knock on my fairing, it sounds solid instead of hollow.  This summer I came across those enclosures and installed them and went for a ride.  As soon as I got home, I removed them.  It sounds so much better without them.  The fairing acts like one big speaker box.  With the amp I am running, I can hear the radio very well with the volume set at 6...I have Mark T glass packs.

What I did was make an aluminum ring with foam rubber on both sides to act as a spacer so I got a tight seal between the speaker and the speaker panel.  Otherwise, there is a gap.  You can also see how I extended the corners because they are 4" instead of 4 1/2"

I just did the Polk upgrade on my 2000 I/S... used the instructions on here..... sacrificed the old speakers as per. took me little over an hour and was well worth it.... not trouble hearing at speed and I have drilled, piggyless, truck stacks.  Running SV and sounds great...only had the trunk on once to make sure they worked and it was great. Got the Polks thru Crutchfield for $134 shipped, for all 4!.

I'm a pretty cheap guy, so what I did was bought some wal-mart 4" speakers for $20, got ¼ yard of black silk for .50 cents, sprayed silicone boot sealant on the silk to repel the rain water, then draped it over my rear speakers.  To test it I put some tissue paper under the sealed silk, got a garden hose and sprayed 'em down, it actually works!!

For $20, even if they do go bad, I'm not out much.
