I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm only on page 126 of the tech board. How much moly should go on the rear splines?  I can't find a vid or pics anywhere.

Some are willing to help.  :cooldude: I will try to find some pics . But basically I clean out all the old really good. Spray carb cleaner works good if you don't have a parts washer. Then put new o-rings in. I put enough moly 60 on the female part to cover all the teeth and the same with the flange. If you put too much on it will do no damage, just splooge out. The pinion cup and shaft same thing but use the 3% moly grease for that.

I was asking if you Wanted to know how much you could get in there :-\
More than willing to help just asking a simple question. Funny how two people see the same thing 180 deg difference.

I use a small brush and coat both the male and female splines evenly with moly paste/grease.

The manual says 0.08 oz into pinion joint spline and 0.04 oz into drive shaft spline. And 0.11 oz to final driven flange splines and 0.04-0.07 oz to joint surface of final gear case o-ring guide and driven flange.
Now how much help was that?

Yes. I use moly grease on the driveline and u-joint, moly paste on the rear splines.

What BPP said, but to clarify a little. Moly grease on the pinion cup and shaft.

Why can't moly paste be used on both the rear splines and the driveline & u-joint? If moly grease is necessary for the driveline & u-joint, what brand is recommended for the Valks?

You will get 50 different preferences for that. I have a generic CarQuest brand 3% moly grease. It's been good. Many use BelRay.

paste and grease are oil held in suspension and released to lubricate when needed, basically. grease has more oil less solids than paste, the u-joint as determined by the design engineers needs more oil. vehicles with drive shafts also always get grease. the rear drive splines needs more moly solids for protection.

I use TS-moly 70% paste, used in sea water conditions, I use their grease also.

I did my rear end service for the first time on the I/S this spring and followed ChrisJ power point in shop talk and found it easy to do.  I read through just about every thread on the board about it and found more different opinions than I can remember.  The important thing is to do it and don't be skimpy with the moly and grease.
