who think your deer is dead in your vehicle, this one is an eye opener.  both seemed non-chalant about a deer coming alive when drug out of the vehicle.  Weird indeed.

Apparently not a hunter.  Can't imagine putting even a road kill deer in a vehicle w/o gutting it first and letting it cool some.  But then I always have a suitable knife on hand, and a blanket to catch any blood.  This kind of poor meat handling is why I prefer to butcher my own deer rather than have my good meat mixed up with others at the processor.

Whitetail season starts here tomorrow, going out with the old man as usual. He's gettin up there, can't see or shoot for crap anymore, can't climb coulee hills very well anymore...he jokes every time we are climbing a hill that I'll have to leave him there with 1 round rather than keep climbing, have had to help him up a few times. I tell him maybe he's gettin too old for this...he says if I die hunting, I'll die a happy man.

And...yes, we do have hills here on the prairies...there are a lot of coulees, every hill, field and bush has a story...and the old man tells me everyone every year as though I wasn't there with him when it happened or I'd never heard them ever before.

Great hearing about your Dad  It's been decades since I've hunted with my Dad, but I think about those times with great fondness. We do have some anti-hunters here, but it's ok.
Good luck in your hunt. May your Dad get the biggest buck of his life and regal you with stories for years to come.

I finished my CORE program back in 1981, have my hunters number, but have never gotten a license. Had butchers in the family, dad and uncles, but no hunters.

Found a hunter at 2 previous jobs, made plans to be taken out and shown the ropes, but they fell through, and lost contact. Only friend who hunts, goes out for 2 weeks to Pringe George with a whole crew, and hunts moose. Quit a production.

Always wanted to know I could take down a living animal and follow it all the way through to the table. Have been around when old Bessy was taken down and butchered, was too young to be allowed to shoot her, but it isn't the same.

Brother-in-law is a hunter, but being in Alberta, same thing would apply, go there for a 2 week trip, get a local license. Ain't going to happen.

This reminds me about the story of a guy who told the cops that he as OK after a bad deer strike accident.  When asked why he said he was OK, when he actually had a broken leg, the man said the cop at the scene had just shot the injured deer next to his car, and it just seemed prudent at the time to say he was OK (there was just a little bit of bone sticking out).

I have dozens of racks on my walls. They aren't there because I'm a "trophy hunter". They're there because every one tells a story. I can tell you where and how I got every one of them and who I was with. And most of them were with my Dad.

One of my best memories was when my son got this one a couple years back, my dad was with us.  Was a pretty proud moment for all of us.

One of my best memories was when my son got this one a couple years back, my dad was with us.  Was a pretty proud moment for all of us.

That is a nice deer. Nice heavy rack. I wanted to take my 6 year old in the morning with me but mom put a stop on that. Said his cough and runny nose needs to get better first. Maybe tomorrow evening we can sneek out for a couple hours.

Yes, we had a bad outbreak a few years ago. I know some northern states had as much as 30% of their deer herd killed off because of it.

Also, bluetounge disease was a problem here a few years ago. You would find deer dead near bodies of water.  I found a bunch dead that year.

I've gotten 2 this year, both with my bow. Nothing with the shotgun yet. One 8 and a ten. Setting in my gun shack right now.  Cold and blowing here but, got the heater going. Normally I'd be in my tree stand but she is blowin too hard and I hate trying to hang on and hunt, belt or no belt.

Interesting, never heard of blue tounge disease, is that isolated in your state/area?

CWD has been around WI since in the 90's I believe, nothing new.  Pretty widespread area in WI I believe but mostly southern WI near me in Iowa/Sauk/Dane/Green counties, among several others.  DNR wants more deer tested to see how widespread it is but no known factual transmittal to humans.  You would think with all the 1000's of deer tested positive the past 20+ years the experts would know more about the deer disease?

The story I read was that it is always fatal, and that bringing killed deer
from affected areas to unaffected areas was a big no-no. We all
had our share of near misses (and some of us worse) and it is
fun to think about killing them all. I hate to think about herds
of deer dying miserable deaths out in the woods too...

You guys sure grow 'em big up in the Great White North !  I'd probably fall out of the tree if I saw something that big. All I care about is that the handles are big enough that the hands don't slip off.   

I'm not up to crawling up into a tree this year, but, its nice to have friends. They've dropped off a couple and they're all filleted and frozen or canned. Brought some down south with us.
