Why is it necessary to do the starter mod if the bike has a starter relay fitted as standard?

Ramie

Not sure what the Starter mod your referring to is, can you explain.
"I am not a courageous person by nature. I have simply discovered that, at certain key moments in this life, you must find courage in yourself, in order to move forward and live. It is like a muscle and it must be exercised, first a little, and then more and more.  A deep breath and a leap."

Color me curious also on this starter mod you speak of.  :coolsmiley: RIDE SAFE.

Start switch safegard. Post started by JetDriver

The issue isn't power for the starter going through the start switch, because, as you said, the bike uses a relay for starter power which is triggered by the circuit going through the start button.  The issue is that all the power for the headlight on a Standard or Tourer is disconnected when you push the start button, by a separate circuit using the same button.  The modification is to add a relay for the headlight using the circuit in the start button to switch the relay.  Interstates already have relays, one for high beam and one for low beam.

What Gryphon said, it removes a high amp load off the start switch when you add the extra relay as described in the link below. The arcing from that load when starting the bike causes the majority of start switch problems. Scroll down to "Start Switch Safeguard" and read up on it. Well worth the time spent to do the mod and not difficult at all.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Did something similar to that with all my bikes where the headlight comes on with the ignition. I mount a switch through a relay to switch the light on independently. Was confused with it called a "Starter Fix" is all.
