It seems to me that there is potential for dirt/mud to collect in those open areas causing the tire to become unbalanced. And I'd think you'd get similar results if those (ribs? fins? spokes?) get deformed from age or bumps and pot holes.
I'll let some other folks put 30,000 top 40,000 mile on them before I give them a try.

I'm not saying it won't work...but I've seen that same type of wheel several years about. For whatever reason, it didn't catch on then and I doubt it will now. People are very reluctant to change from something that works.
I have first hand experience as I once bought a brand new RX4 rotary engine Mazda in 1974. They said the Wankel would revolutionize the auto industry. I'm here to tell you Mazda would be extinct if they continued with being a predominantly rotary company. Back then, they only had the 808 as a reciprocating engine. They switched their philosophy to make piston engine cars with the only rotary being the RX6...then RX7, and now RX8.
I had to have my engine rebuilt twice in 54,000 miles at a grand a pop. So, I'll let someone else try out the innovations. Smiley

I've seen a few dealer ATV's with that style of wheel.

I too wondered about mud clumping and balance.

I wonder if a little flex in the "struts" would squeeze it out?

Those would not be good up here in ice and snow country.  Ice buildup in the wheels would severely put them out of balance.  I already have that issue with the 15 spoke custom wheels on my Civic Coupe.  I have to carry a broom handle to clear out ice and snow from the wide flat profile of the wheel.
