Tucson - Its a dry heat

« on: March 28, 2015, 09:18:41 AM »

Best article I have ever seen on this topic.  I ride a LOT, sometimes forced to work into dark, with a resulting night time 1 hour commute home - which I hate; deer collisions are always in the back of my mind.  About once a month on my morning commute I'll see a carcass on the edge of the freeway; sometimes with the damaged car still sitting there from the night before...  We have 10 acres just outside of Tucson, and on my morning walk with the canine yesterday before dawn, she went NUTS.  Just on the ridgeline of our property I counted SEVEN deer.  Never seen so many at one time.

Buried in the article stats: Motos represent 70% of ALL vehicle-deer casualities.  Miles driven (on average) in the country between 2008 and 2010 increased 2%; while reported deer collisions increased 10X.

I hit a mid sized buck a few years ago in our Jeep about 3 miles from home on a country road doing about 30mph.  Pushed in the plastic grill guard enough to tweak the AC condenser enough to release all the refrigerant; cost me $1000 to get fixed.  IMHO, I wish we could kill ALL these beasts... tickedoff

Individual pages below for when the BMW site pulls the article.  I have captured the pdf and converted into a jpg to post.  Anyone know if we can attach a pdf?

My damn neighbor behind me, retired school Superintendent, has ears of corn stuck on spindles for them to eat.

So, now all of his neighbors in a circle have 8 to 12 deer in our back yards almost every night.    I'm one of those in that circle.

They have eaten all the shrubs almost to the ground in all the yards.

Would love to get the crossbow out some night and pop a few of them off the face of the earth.

The meat would look good in a homeless kitchen freezer.

Lots of deer in the woods around me, saw 7 in an empty field yesterday. They do often bed down in the 5 acres behind me but my German Shepherd keeps them moving on.....

It's always a concern around here.  Right now, I know of three road kills within two miles of our home.  Came as close as I want to come in 2012, down in Arkansas.  Front wheel missed the deer by inches.  In addition to the rain gear, I now pack an extra pair of under shorts...

I've seen "Whistles" for lack of a better description which are claimed to drive deer away.

Everything I've read or heard about the devices is that they are snake oil.

Anyone heard anything positive about the whistles?

I have a Deer Hornet on the bike.  It is a powered whistle that was highly recommended by a riding buddy.  He lived in the UP of Michigan where deer are as plentiful as insects.  You need a switch to turn it on and off, as they are annoying to bikers in front and people in town.  But it is not noticeable by the rider at speed.

back when I bought my Valk, it had two of them on the bike.

I work shift work and ride to/from work at night a lot.

A lot of the time, there are deer standing directly next to the road.

They acted as if I was never there....never noticed me, didn't even lift their heads up.

Those things are snake oil.
