Yesterday, was riding along with a buddy of mine, and while on a sharp curve in some twisties a little dog appeared at the edge of the road. The dog stopped then started to run in front of me and I straightened up just enough to go off the road down in a ditch. The bike went into a death wobble as I road back out of the ditch and I thought I was going to survive but there was an above ground concrete canal with about 3 foot high concrete sides in my way, and all I could do was turn the wheel and lay the bike on its side. I stopped about 4 inches from the concrete.

My buddy stopped  to check and one other motorist stopped. I was ok except for a cut to my lip and nose from face against mirror and I have a bad left ankle, going to the doctor today sprained or cracked bone maybe, swollen some and can't put my weight on it. Lucky I know, but mad and feel about 3 foot tall.

The bike may have a bent left engine guard, broke my add on running light, and moved clutch around, driving peg and passenger peg looks strange. We had to slide the bike away from the concrete so as to stand it up. I spun the engine over maybe 10 seconds then it started running rich at first. I rode it home, but was really painful to up shift.

Except for dirt bikes this was a first for me. I was a little fast in the twisties but not crazy fast, my buddy said I should have ignored the dog, but I never had time to think, just reacted, maybe next time. Sure makes me realize how fast things can happen, needed to vent to those who could understand, please be careful!

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like you did everything right and I am glad that you are essentially alright.  The bike can be fixed so I think you dodged a much bigger problem.

Hope the Dr report is good

Ah, the old story of the Dog who ate my bike.  Wink  I am happy you survived  with minor injuries.  I would go back and find that little pooch and give him a piece of your boot.

Hope you recover fast and get the bike back on the road.  Think of it this way you gained some experience that some of us don't come back from,  so Welcome back!   cooldude

Firefighter, I'm glad you are alive. And yes things happen the blink of an eye. Some buddies and I went on a ride yesterday to Prescott. Unfortunately we encountered a motorcycle who had a lady pull out in front of him on the Hiway. He clipped her, hit the end of the guard rail dead on. Broke the support at the ground and bent the rail back 10 feet. Thankfully he was wearing a helmet and didn't have any head injury that I could tell. But he was messed up. He must have hit the broken end of the guard rail. He had a leather coat but it sliced right thru that an he had a 8 lb. chunk of muscle and fat from his chest just hanging. Poor guy didn't know where he was or what happened. Was kind of combative when he came to and didn't want any of us helping him. I think he probably thought he was being attacked or something. I was finally able to get him to realize what was going on and that we were trying to help. But once he saw that big chunk hanging he kept trying to grab it and stuff it back in the hole. The funny thing (not really funny but) was once he realized what had happened and saw his bike all messed up he kept saying "I am so unlucky ". I tried to explain to him in reality under the circumstances he was actually really lucky. Things could have been much worse. Firefighter I'm sorry to hijack your post. I've been thinking about the guy " Robert from Prescott Valley" since it happened. I AM REALLY GLAD YOU ARE GOING TO BE OK.  cooldude

Thanks to all, I am lucky and I had my gear on, could have used a full face helmet though. Was a very bad place to encounter that dog, and I reacted. No animals were harmed.

When a frickin lazy turkey buzzard/vulture flops skyward as you're closing at 50 mph it's hard not to take evasive action as you get close enough to grab a claw.

Glad your safe.My buddy hit a dog and it ended up locking up his front wheel and flipping the bike.Insurance company almost totaled it.He ended up in the hospital and was 1 click for meeting his maker.Took 3 months to heal before he could go home. The funny part is that was the only time he was sober, always rode smashed and never had an accident. You may also check your state laws as in many an unleashed dog responceable for an accident the owner is liable for all damages.

I hate to agree with hitting the animal but that's my position.  You have to discipline your mind so you don't react by instinct.  Think about what you'll do before it happens.  I will do what I can to avoid hitting an animal except for altering the path of the vehicle (bike or cage).  It's that changing direction that eats us up.

I'm glad you're relatively okay.

Ditto!!  cooldude

I have launched several small dogs for the goal posts.  Dogs that chase vehicles need correction.  Owners that let their dogs run free (and chase cars) also need correction.  I ran over a huge ground hog which launched me off the seat and the only thing holding me to the bike was my arms to handlebars.  Looked back to see him dead, and he just kept walking away, without even a limp.

It is taught in MSF course to sit up straight and just hit any small animal, except an Amarillo or hard shell turtle, they win every time.

Glad your okay cooldude

Had a dog come out of a driveway at me one evening.  I could hear the owners yelling at it to stop, but he didn't listen and bolted out the fenced area, right into my highway peg.

I barely felt it hit, even thought he was a medium size pit bull.

HE felt though, I could hear him yelping and running back to the house.

Put a small dent in the valve cover where the peg hit it.

Guess I won that one, but I ain't bragging about it, just relating a story.

i had nearly the exact same thing happen! i saw the dog running for the road, and took my feet off of the hwy pegs and to the regular ones. dog hit the hwy peg and ran back yelping. my pegs are on the outside of my engine guards so it caused no damage, just folded it back up.

When I was 14 I had a Suzuki 90 that I delivered papers at 5 am. There was a neighborhood dog that would run out and try to get me every morning. My technique for 6 months was to lift up my legs so he couldn't bite me and motor on. One day I had finally had it with him and his owners. I did my usual technique but when he got up to me I stomped down on his head good. That dog never came after me again in the 2 years I delivered papers.

Yah,  dog owner is responsible, but unless you have witnesses to back you up and you know 110% the dog owner,  I doubt he/she will pay up anyways unless the dog got toasted since his word vs. yours no pics to prove it.   Instinct takes over wanting to avoid a deer/dog/opposum/raccoon/skunk/turkey/goose even small flying birds, but sometimes you gotta just wack it good to avoid a more major collision.  I even swerved slightly instinct taking over when  chipmunk ran across the road and I winged it lifting up my feet - such a wimp I am...   Grin

My daughter avoided a deer with my new truck 2 years ago and took out a country mailbox.  Luckily,  only cost me a new antenna, side mirror,  and some light buffing out and paying the homeowner 80 bucks for a new mailbox vs. a serious deer collision.  The police officer told us that night including my daughter next time to hit the deer vs. running off the road since could've been a lot worse if ran off the road more so than just winging a mailbox.

Well, hell,,, seen the x-rays, I have a left spiral fracture of the fibula just above the ankle. It is broken completely in two pieces. I have to wait till Thursday to see a specialist, gonna be a while before I ride or do anything else. Bet they will want to pin it!! I know I am lucky, but I am an outside busy guy, gonna be tough not exploding. Just using crutches to go to the bathroom is a big pain.

Big thanks to all you guys for the input and stories, and listening, will keep you updated.

Yeah that does suck. You are going to have to get inventive in how to do stuff. So you don't go nuts just sitting around. One of those nice rolling garage stools might be good for working on the bike.

Ouch - I had a possible break like that last winter tripping over ruts in my driveway in febuary (they were all frozen). I wore an ankle brace for about a week before I got in to see my foot doctor, who x-rayed me and made the diagnoses. I got to wear one of those velcro'ed on boots instead for about 4 weeks (and we had snow during that time. Couldn't operate a clutch , so I had to swap cars with the wife's new car (that just fortunately had an Automatic shifting transmission).

Take it easy and follow your doctor's advice to heal quickly.

If it comes to a choice between the crutch and the second finger I'd go with the finger every time.   Shocked

Sorry to hear about your leg.  I crashed my interstate in December.  Broke a bunch of bones, including my Tibia in a way similar to what you describe.  Physical therapist did wonders to help.  Highly recommend it.  The fact that the therapists were all women has nothing to do with it.   Wink

Sorry to hear of the damage but glad you know what you are facing and will heal.  Put some Stabil in the tank and then start the bike up weekly and get the motor up to temperature to keep the carbs from gumming up, the battery charged, etc.

Get better soon!

Well been waiting from Monday to Thursday to see an orthopedic surgeon 30 miles away. This morning while filling out the paperwork I was asked how I broke my leg? When I said a motorcycle accident, they told me they could not help me, that they don't do vehicle accidents. I called my general doctor who referred me and they called around and could not find another orthopedic dr. till June! They told me I needed to go to the hospital emergency. I did and after 2.5 hours they wanted to xray me. I had the exrays already so then they wrapped my ankle and said they would referr me to a specialist. I told them I was here to have the bone set and a cast put on. They told me it would have to be an emergency otherwise I needed a specialist and they gave me a phone number. Oh and they want 1350.00. So I have called the new orthopedic guy and am supposed to go there Monday, been over a week and still have the same broken bone!!
