The safest way to view the eclipse is not to directly view it at all. According to NASA and the American Astronomical Society, if you are going to view the eclipse, never do so without full time use of NASA.GOV approved solar eclipse glasses obtained directly from the list of approved manufacturers listed on the NASA.GOV website. These glasses contain both the ISO certification stamp and the name of the manufacturer clearly listed on the glasses. However, beware…fake glasses are being sold by many sources that even have the ISO and manufacturer’s name on the glasses. IF YOU ARE GOING TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE, ONLY DO SO USING SOLAR ECLIPSE GLASSES OBTAINED DIRECTLY FROM ONE OF THE APPROVED NASA.GOV MANUFACTURERS. Amazon is not a manufacturer.
It is NOT safe to directly look at the eclipse without proper eye protection…not even for a few seconds. Temporary, and sometimes permanent loss of vision may occur if we fail to take proper safety precautions. This damage will occur painlessly since the cells in the retina that are damaged during the eclipse do not have any pain receptors. So, in Atlanta, even though we will experience a 97% totality solar eclipse, do not directly view the eclipse without certified and properly obtained ISO (International Organization of Standardizations) eye protection. Even in areas that experience 100% totality, direct viewing without proper protection is potentially very dangerous.
Be sure to inspect your approved glasses to ensure that they are ISO and manufacturer stamped and inspect the lenses looking for any scratches or defects in the lenses. Do not use them if they are scratched, wrinkled or more than three years old or if you are not sure that they were obtained directly from an approved manufacturer.
It is NOT safe to view the eclipse directly with any of the following: Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark they are and no matter how many pairs you put together. Through any binoculars, telescopes or cameras (even cell phone cameras) without certified lenses that are approved and manufactured specifically for that device. It is NOT safe to view through these devices even if you are wearing approved direct viewing eclipse glasses. These approved direct viewing eclipse glasses are only safe to be used for direct viewing without looking through binoculars, telescopes or cameras.
It is NOT safe to view the eclipse directly through windows (car, home or office) as these windows do not block out the potentially damaging solar rays without using NASA.GOV approved and properly obtained eclipse glasses. If you have any questions, please feel free to go to the NASA.GOV website

Yeah, I'd heard there are some dangerous bootlegs about but I can't find the "approved list" on NASA's site. Got a link? (& thanks for the important PSA!) See ya soon, safe winds my Brother

I'll be sitting in my pasture with a cool one in my hand. I'm on hwy 360 in Vonore Tn in the Ballplay area, plenty of pasture if anyone wants a place to watch it from.

Unless you live where you have to yell to your neighbor hol·ler 2 (hŏl′ər) adj.v. & n. Chiefly Upper Southern US Variant of hollow. Holler, winder, and tater are merely variant pronunciations reflected in spelling. As a noun, holler has the specific meaning in the Appalachians of "a small valley between mountains": They live up in the holler underneath Big Bald Mountain.

Solar-viewing glasses are not powerful enough to protect your eyes from magnified sunlight. I.E Binoculars and telescopes.
Even if you are wearing solar-viewing glasses, viewing the disk of the sun through a magnification device will result in serious eye damage if the device is not equipped with a proper solar filter, according to the viewing safety sheet.

this morning on the news they showed the traffic heading into the best viewing areas in Oregon. Several roads around here have become moving parking lots, taking nearly double the time to get from on town to the next. Really going to be a zoo Monday afternoon, all day Tuesday when all these folks decide to go home.
Glad I decide to stay home and watch or 93-94% eclipse.

I'm in Kansas City at my MIL's - at her house it's supposed to be 99.9% covered - a couple miles north and we can get in totality. Going to St Joseph (30 miles) will get to the longest totality in the area - but will probably have traffic issues. Got our eclipse glasses. Hoping for good weather early Monday afternoon.

Riding about 300mi to Alliance NE. Taking back roads. Tent camping, have reservation. Pulling cargo trailer with supplies. Besides belly tank, also hauling another 7 gal gas, total 15 gal. That will get me there and most of the way back. Still buy gas when I can. Bringing my own food and liquids and electricity (inverter, battery, & USB ports on bike) and cash (and CCW). Pretty much completely self-sufficient. Except some gas. Riding overnight to avoid the traffic. Coming back - probably an issue but still on back roads.

Using your phone to photograph the sun could damage the sensor. Don't do it.
Put your eclipse glasses over the lens if you must take a photograph.

My plan is to go down to Kentucky and stop at the first rest area that is in the path of totality about 2 hours before the main event. Then set up camera gear and make myself comfortable.
You may want to do that a few hours earlier. Friend was at the first TN rest area from KY on the way south to Atlanta and was told by staff they are expecting over 100,000 people at the 2 rest areas.
