I went to DC for work and decided to ride from NC for the trip. First, wife got me a sheepskin seat cover (searched on here to find the best one). How in the world did I ever ride without one?!?
Twice while riding up and once on the way back, the engine "missed" and then immediately returned to normal. It was like I flicked the ignition switch off and on really quickly. Any ideas what might cause this?
In case it's relevant, it's a 99 IS with 45k miles.

Do you have a thumb throttle lock? I have had that happen when pushing the lock on it will sometimes hit the kill switch just enough to interrupt the spark and cause exactly what you describe.

I have had it happen twice. Some call it a burp. Both ti, es while just cruising for miles at 60 mph.

I have a throttle lock, but notherwise the type that crosses near the ignition switch. I made no movements, just cruising down the road.
I know what you mean though, I've bumped the switch before and it was very similar.

I've had it happen on my Standard but never on my I/S. Never did figure out what caused it.

That definitely raises the pucker factor, especially far from home......I'd be giving it some serious side eye the rest of the way.....

Well it is either fuel or electric. Where was the fuel gauge each time? Did all 6 cylinders stop or just 1 or 2?
As you are riding along, touch the kill switch and the key switch, move them around without turning them off to see if movement is an issue.
Did you hit a bump each time it failed? Were you in a curve or uphill or downhill?
What if anything was common about the 2 failures?
Keep looking.

Do you have a lot of keys on the key ring that's inserted in the ignition. Keys flying around in the wind have been known to cause a "burp" such as you describe, the key turns ever so slightly in the "off" direction and back again. But, sometimes will move just enough to get your attention with a short miss.

That symptom (the completely unexpected quarter second power off glitch) has been described here before several times. Never been clearly diagnosed, but thought to be ignition or ICU ECU related. But no one has ever said it became real chronic or worse. I've never had it (thumping wooden head).
I virtually never use my kill switch, and think maybe I should on occasion to make sure it's not getting corroded or something.
If you're ever up here with time for a ride (short or long), give me a little heads up and we can go for a spin. (But I won't go into DC, I'm allergic) (a mile north of Ft Belvoir off Route 1)

This phenomenon has happened to many over the years. I'm on my third valk all of them tourers and this has occurred maybe once twice a year on all of them. On one occasion with the first bike it missed a few times in one day then not again for many months. I think it is a static charge that builds up in the pickups or ecu. As others have said. Ride on and don't worry

It's happened to me maybe 4 times in the past 115,000 miles. Sun spot activity? Fluctuation in the earth's magnetic field? A "glitch" escaping from the tank through the fuel lines? Got me.

Just keep riding. If it continues to happen, then worry.
My 99' IS did it twice when I had it back in 2010.
My current Green IS from last year, it never happened yet.

Pete, the commonality of all three instances was that nothing out of the ordinary was going on. Cruising between 70-80, no bumbs, level ground, just cruising. Fuel was about half the first time and 3/4 the other. It was such a quick "burp" that I couldn't tell if just one or all 6 stopped.

Two keys, John. One in the ignition and one hanging on a small ring. It would blow my mind if that single key is causing it.
