January a year ago Mama had a hiatal hernia repaired laparopscopically.  This January the hernia tore again.  It was really a blessing because as they did an MRI verifying the hernia they discovered she had small blood clots in her lungs.  Blood clots in the lung are usually not discovered until either they have become seriously life threatening or have resulted in death.

The surgeon attempted to again repair the hernia laparoscopically.  After 2.5 hours he was unable to do so and referred her to another surgeon with a reputation for fixing the tough cases.  After some study the second surgeon decided it wasn't wise to do the surgery that was needed until the clots were resolved.

Mama has been on blood thinners and pain medication since January and tomorrow the anticipated surgery is to be done.  It will be the traditional approach with an incision from the navel to the ribs.

She's a bit nervous.  I'm a bit nervous.  Hopefully this will put a long ordeal behind us.

I was just thinking about her the other days, was just going to ask how she was fairing.

What more to say, Prayers going out to her and you. Sometimes the wait is unbearable. I went through heart surgery back in 03'. Best thing of all, was when I got the call that surgery was the next work day, I was standing in the Fraser River with a fishing rode trying to catch salmon.

Prayers to Lori and the Doctor performing the surgery. She's a trooper and I know you both can't wait to get this behind you and get back to normal pain-free living for her.

Looking forward to seeing you both at Inzane!

I smacked a tree sledding at age 12 and ruptured my spleen-in K.C.-I have that scar from navel to ribs and it hasn't bothered me at all--the doctor got to look at everything and plenty of room to do what he needed to do..the the new Di Vinci machines are incredible going thru the belly button-- but so is the learning curve--I am sure she will do fine!!

Lori came out of surgery at about 13:00 after 2.5 hours of work in what the surgeons had estimated as a 4.3 hour procedure.   The doctor was pleased with the result.  He said there are no guarantees against a recurrence but he thinks the chances are with us.   She was in a fair amount of pain this afternoon but was sleeping when I left her.  Sleep is good.  She didn't get any last night.

She is expected to stay at the hospital over the weekend at least.  The doctor will then decide when she has acceptably advanced enough to return home.  It's a full length abdominal incision so it will probably not be a really quick recovery.

Glad to hear the surgery went well, Carl. Give Lori our love and best wishes, please. If I may ask, since it was the second surgery for the same type of hernia, did they use a screen or other reinforcing? Regardless, I pray she is over this for good!

Thanks for the update!

... If I may ask, since it was the second surgery for the same type of hernia, did they use a screen or other reinforcing?

Before the procedure the surgeon indicated they were considering a mesh.  After the surgery he indicated that seeing what they had they declined using the mesh.
