I finally blew a head light. What’s a good replacement/upgrade light to go with? It’s a 2000 Interstate.

A couple of fellows on here are (were?) vendors for headlight upgrades...

"Bons" made a "smartswitch" harness made for use with a regular
bulb that bypassed some of the little OEM handlebar wiring, essentially
hooking your bulb right to the battery, causing it to be nicely bright...
MarkT, I think, has a wiring diagram that implements a similar setup
somewhere on his website, you could use that to roll your own if there's
no more smartswitches available.

"Darksider" makes a new headlight insert that allows you to install
a "real" LED headlight, which is supposedly way better than just
putting in a LED "bulb"...

Darksider's will only work with the Standard and Tourer.

Valkorado has come up with a good LED replacement for the I/S. I haven't tried it yet, but probably will soon. I've just been using the regular H4 Auto bulbs. You have to cut off one of the tabs though.

Steel Cowboy has come up with a complete redo of the I/S headlight with LED buckets. You need a new (or old) interstate headlight enclosure though.

I've used these for several years. Nice upgrade from stock 45/45, and the usual auto parts 55/60 replacements.

The Interstate has (2?) relays, unlike other models, and the fairing breathes very well, and I've had no heat or wiring or socket problems. (and done no wiring or socket upgrade like std/tourer guys have had to do)

They are still halogens, and the draw is higher at 2 X 80 dims, and I do not run bright 100s at all (though I may flash them).  I don't ride at night (much at all).

I don't run a bunch of other electrical draw stuff, and have had no problem battery-wise.

The shoptalk how-to on IS bulbs (H4 auto parts, and bending off the ears) (I had the keeper rings in my bike when purchased, but had so much trouble getting them and the bulb in together, I'd just left them out, and the bulbs stay put fine without them, and I did not have to mess with headlight aim either) (properly aimed, I don't get flashed on 2 X 80 dims either)

I have no idea what kind of inspections you go through up there.  80/100s are not generally considered street legal, and this is why they are called OFF ROAD.  No one sticks some kind of meter on my headlights in my State inspections.  All they look for is working lights.

Over the years, I generally blow a dim on one side.  Sometimes smacking the clear headlight cover over the lights causes it to come back on, sometimes not.  These have not burned out any faster than my previous 55/60s.

I am going to replace the Head Light Bulb in my 2003 Std. with Pathfinder LED 4H 6000K Bright White, Part No.H4SFX.
I have already replaced the bulbs in the Spotlights with 50 Watt, High Performance, H3 LED 360 Bulbs with Pathfinder Part No. 226-0003. The new 6000K Pure White bulbs are GREAT!

I bought some alignement shims at https://electricalconnection.com/index.php/product/h4-bulb-alignment-shims/

Then replaced my bulbs with H4s https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CO93RA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hardest part is getting the connector off.

I ended up installing a set of H4’s. I didn’t have the shims but they seemed to fit in without any issues. Defiantly a brighter white. I’ll be out late on the bike tonight so I’ll see how good they are.

I am sorry, I listed the Item No. (226-0003) instead of the Part No. The correct Pathfinder Part No. is HC350W.

Those are the exact bulbs I mentioned in this recent post.  Electrical Connection just slapped their name on them. Much less expensive here.  And yes, they are excellent bulbs, I run one in my Tourer and two in my Interstate. Best LED bulb I have used, period.

I put these

https://www.eaglelites.com/collections/motorcycle-headlight-kits

in my 99 tour 2 months ago and will never look back. Single best safety addition I have done. The LED lighting was a topic at this years VRCC and it sold me. The headlight requires an adapter ring available from Josh Chambers

Hope this helps

did you have to cut off the bottom 2 tabs without using the shim/adapter plate?

The instructions say you have to cut out the bottom 2 tabs to get it to fit in, but see no reason why having to do that and then using the adapter ring?

I believe the adapter ring was to support the hold down of the H4 bulb after those 2 lower tabs where removed.

It was not needed in my IS after changing to H4 bulbs.
