I'm at home all day (well, almost) and I let the TV run much of the time.  My life partner is able to completely tune out commercials but I don't.  I find myself sometimes amused and sometimes aggravated by the stupidity that crosses the screen.  What's scary is that since the advertisers spent so much money to put them forward there must be a significant portion of the watching public that responds positively to them.

Almost all insurance commercials qualify.

I've seen one several times in which William Devane tells us to buy gold.  He says, "I worked hard for my money and I'm not about to lose it now."  Worked hard?  He's and actor!  I suppose there may be some that work up a sweat but I don't think many.

How about you?  What stupid commercials catch your attention and make you wonder why anyone would believe them?

What's scary is that since the advertisers spent so much money to put them forward there must be a significant portion of the watching public that responds positively to them.

I really don't believe that at all.

I positively hate 99% of them.  When I can't get to the mute button in time, I swear loudly at them to drown them out while reaching for the mute button.

I think TV advertising is now trying intentionally to offend, upset, disturb or be so stupid or ridiculous that you can't get it out of your head.  They don't actually sell products, instead they piss you off so much, you can't forget their crap.  I vote with my pocketbook, and there's 100 things I'll never buy; even if they are good products, I'll never know.

There are two categories that top the stupid list.

1) ALL pharmaceutical adds.  Most of them require a prescription, so do they expect people to run to the doctor and demand prescriptions? Or take a gun to the pharmacy and steal them?  Do doctors decide what to prescribe based on TV commercials?  Our dope is the best dope in the world (then the whole 2d half is all the bad sh!t that can happen to you, including sh!tting your pants and death)

2) All the scum bag lawyer class action adds..... Roundup, Asbestos, baby powder, and 50 others.  We have secured a ginormous pile of money, so call now and get your free share of it.   (course they get a cut of every share)

And I would drive uninsured before giving Liberty Mutual a freeking penny.

I agree that there are dozens that I absolutely cant stand. But here is one that I can not figure out..

The match making outfit that has been using the same actors for 5-6 years now. They change the commercial, but not he actors.

You would think that their services would have been able to find them a suitable mate in much less time, would you not?

The starving (grossly overweight) Russian Holocaust survivors commercials have been on for at least 12 years. They are still alive.
Most any commercial that has a second one free , just pay separate handling . I called and tried to get just the one and free shipping. No can do , you have to get both to get free shipping on the first one and the second one is twice as costly as the original.

I don't watch a lot of TV with commercials.  I got Britbox and they have some good series.  Stopped watching Foxnews, except for a hour in the morning.

I can watch Foxnews two ways.  One using Hulu and one using the Foxnews App on Roku.  If you compare the two channels you will note the number of "channeled" commercials.  On the Foxnews App there are fewer commercials (same time frame just about 50/50 commercials and "Commercial Break in Progress). In other words, Hulu knows where I am by my internet service provider.

Like Jess, I don't like all the commercials from big Pharma.  I always thought I should trust my doctor as long as I ask good questions, to prescribe what I needed and what was best.  And there are exceptions to that as well.

Back in the 80's I had atrial fibrillation (sp).  Went to my doctor (supported the plant I worked at) and he proscribed Quinidine Sulfate.  Problem went away (stress related I believe)  Kept taking the drug on and off as needed for several years.  Then in the 90's I had run out of the drug and had another attacked of atrial fibrillation.  Went to the same doc asked to have the prescription refilled and he said, "No, that stuff will kill you" and off the hospital for a heart re-start.

Haven't had cable/satellite TV for about 15 years.

Netflix and Amazon. Commercial free.

I do get to see some commercials on youtube and they annoy me because of the crass copy and over loud sound.

I am a radio listener but seem able to block them apart from car dealer ads. Anyone who buys a car from a person that yells at them is to be pitied as far as I'm concerned.

All good examples so far. A couple channels I watch will have 2-3 commercials in a row, then replay the same ones back to back during the same break. One that keeps popping up is the so-called "tattoo play-off" and they will play it as much as three times during one break. I heard some years ago that many ads are contructed to be understood at the 7 year old level. Can't disagree with that most of the time.

Speaking of commercial TeeVee, right now, on TBS there is a movie about giant (like 9' tall) Kansas girl that takes way too much acid and has a very disturbing trip...

Not a commercial, a show.

I'm not a tatoo fan.  But who volunteers to get a tatoo on a show where it is a timed deal (and not enough time to finish or do a proper job)??????  Then they all sit around and criticize the work.

So many reality shows like this; fix up cars, make knives and swords, build choppers, get tatoos, yada.  The whole show is an intentional schizophrenia to do a big job in not enough time.  I won't watch them.

I pre-record everything I watch, then fast forward through the commercials.

Daily local news, I record from 4:30 to 6:00 am

Sometimes I get distracted or forget to fast forward and catch a few commercials.  Pretty much they all suck.

I do like the original "Jake from State Farm"

Another observation on (bad) commercials.

The more low rent the channel is, the worse (and more repetitive) the commercials are.

And I regularly watch old TV shows and movies on the low rent channels.

I have noticed that a large number of commercials feature Bi-Racial couples, families whatever....
This seems to be a trend in the marketing community.  An effort to be politically correct?
I don't know.
I don't care about the races inter marrying but the representation seems to be on the high side in commercials.
Am I imagining this?  Am I a closet racist for even mentioning this?

You can afford that Rune Serk, just have to sell about a few dozen guns off is all.    Grin

Yep,  those insurance commercials suck on all the time.  Shaq and the General is a crock of BS.  I think General only sells to high risk people who cannot get anyone else insured elsewhere.  I called thinking Shaq is on so why not try.  My cycle and car insurance was like 6xs higher in price than anywhere else I just laughed and hung up.  Also do not like the mayhem guy in the Allstate ads and Flo with Progressive is getting annoying even if I have Progressive insurance now.

Also, is it just me, or are almost all TV commercials LOUDER than the TV show you are watching?

There's more science to it than that - let me explain.

If you would look on the loudness meter while the commercial is on, you will notice that the PEAK value of the audio never exceeds the Peak level on the program. However - the AVERAGE volume is considerably higher. They do this by compressing the range of audio - in this case, raise the floor on the quiet stretches. They aren't messing with the frequency range, just the volume is compressed.

As stated above - the mute button or the skip forward button (for DVR owners) is your friend.

All of the insurance commercial are pretty dumb.   I try to have a different station ready to go when they come on and flip channels.

The ones that make me laugh are the ones offering a limited time offers.   "Order in the next 10 minutes" to get special price.  But they repeat the same commercial several times over a hour.  So when is the time limit up?   I know why/what they are doing, just makes me wonder doesn't everyone know its a come on?

Sure makes sense.

I've discussed with Cheryl that the number of these couples portrayed in ads seemes disproportionate to what I'd seen in the real world.

All the Aids drug commercials. Do what you want behind closed doors but I don't need to see a drag queen or two guys kissing in a commercial. Does that make me a bigot? No. I just don't want to see it on TV. When these commercials come on I mute the TV and bring up the menu screen.

My wife makes me mute the ASPCA commercials. Makes her sad to see them.

Insurance commercials

Progressive - hate'em all
State Farm - hate'em all

Farmer's - Like them
Allstate - Like them and the mayhem guy

General - don't like them but think Shaq is a great spokesman for the many ads he does. Just like the guy.

Most of the Covid related ads by virtually any company/corporation. It is like they are addressing a bunch of scared kindergartners.

Thankfully the truly stupid ones I can't remember anyway.
