"When You're Dead, Your Bank Account Goes to Zero"

Livin' Better Side of The Great Divide

« on: June 28, 2021, 03:48:33 PM »

For the serious hockey fans:   Montreal-Tampa Bay begin the quest for the holy grail.  My Habs are underdogs, but they have been for the entire season and now for the playoffs.
They dispatched all three playoff teams (Toronto, Winnipeg, Las Vegas) that were supposed to beat them handily.  The reason for that is Carey Price, still a premiere goaltender at the age of 33 and after 14 years with Canadiens.  Unbeatable when he's on his game.
Pulling for the greatest NHL franchise of all time to gain their first Cup since 1993.

Go Habs, Go!

There's a reason the play the games - the best rated team doesn't always win.

Good luck to the Habs (being a somewhat KC Chiefs fan - it's hard to get motivated for Tampa Bay Smiley )

Was nice to see the Canadiens take out the NHL's pet team, the Knight's. They're  in tough with Tampa, but I'm pullin' for them.

I'm more into the Euros though. Great games today, and my Germans take on England tomorrow AM... an absolute classic matchup  cooldude

Watching soccer and the Habs are very similar, about the same amount of diving.

I LOVE hockey and am heartbroken they've taken a knee to the NWO.. pro sports are all dead to me now. I'll not support anything they do now by watching, even my beloved hockey has gone to the dark side.  Lips Sealed Angry

Somehow, I knew that the flakes would start falling as soon as I mentioned that this thread was for serious hockey fans.
Please take the political horseshit over to the pain in the ass board where it belongs.
Why mess up a good discussion of the hockey fans here?
I get it, obsessive/compulsive need for attention, but it's not welcome here.

I just wish those blue jerseys had a leaf on them!

Seeing as they don't, I am cheering for Price ..... not the Habs. I wouldn't have had Price in the top 10 best the last few years but the way he's playing now he's back up there. He is a guy that I think deserves a cup and I hope he gets it. I was really hoping NY would have got in as well.

Im not sure what will sting more, a 4 game sweep or losing game 7 in OT, but as an Oilers fan (yes they suck, I know, save your breath  Grin ) and Western Canadian, I’m rooting for whichever one of those will hurt the most.  Would say the same if it was the Leafs in the final.

I will agree though, IF the Habs win, I’ll be happy for Price. Only him. Hope he then promptly retires to break the hearts of the fans  Grin.

Good that a team from Canada got back in the race after a decade of not having a finalist.
Good for the country's soul.
Toronto needs a couple of pieces to complement Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and get them further in the playoffs.  They can get there.

I was thinking that Price might have had to pull a Ray Bourque someday and request a trade to a contender, but I believe Canadiens can pull this off if their defensive strategy holds up.
It did not last night as Tampa's positioning and passing was excellent and they eventually wore down Montreal's system with their forecheck and supported by stellar stops from Vasilevskiy when called upon.

Note: Officiating during the entire playoffs has been just terrible on the no calls for obvious penalties committed right in front of the zebras; didn't matter what teams or what games, just terrible officiating all around.  Agreed?

I too hoped the Islanders would have gotten in, a better matchup for Montreal (and closer trips for both clubs) and Isles having similar players and styles of play.  Certainly would have preferred Varlamov to Vasilevskiy as I watched him for all his "sieve" years in Colorado. Roll Eyes

2funny 2funny 2funny The only thing that keeps us Canucks fans still hoping after all these decades of waiting and near misses, is the absolute futility of the Laughs...er, Leafs. As long as they keep consistent, we can always say, "ya but look at the Leafs, at least we've been to the dance a few times over the past 5 decades Grin
I want the Habs to win...anything to screw up the NHL's preference to keep the focus on their preferred US market teams. Heck, I'd even pull for the Leafs if they were the ones in the finals...well OK, that might take a bit of work... Wink

I have enjoyed hockey on the pro level since I could drive to see the Blackhawks play, we used to bring 2 bottles of wine for the 'winos' hanging around, we'd give them a bottle and tell them if they watch the car we'd give them the other one after the game.. the car was never molested Smiley

I played all I could in Chicago growing up and through HS, it's my favorite sport by far.

I witnessed hockey's birth in LA when Gretz was brought there to play. I have many long and wonderful years remembering what hockey is and what it should be. It's not me who brought politics into the game, it was the NHL itself.

Before the magic bug hit I went to a couple recent Kings games, my girl got to witness what I think is one of the most exciting things in sports when the Kings beat the Knights in a 3 on 3 overtime.. she said it was one of the coolest things she's seen.

This thread was small when I commented and it could have taken many or multiple directions, I didn't mean to piss in anyone's Cheerios and was surprised at the comment following mine.. as I said, we don't have to be assholes to communicate, unless the OP has some other motivation.

So please don't lecture me on hockey, as I said I'm heartbroken and watching intently for a shift in the winds back to what is right. I love my Great Country more than sports, but the hockey thing kills me most..

With all due respect to my north of the border Valk brothers.

Go Tampa Bay!

I agree it's great to see a Canadian team in the cup, but being a Bruins fan, any other team with out the big"C" little "h" on the sweater would have been fine.

It'll be interesting to see how Montreal responds to the beat down they took Monday.

Maybe Carey Price really didn't grow up on Kripton.

Tukka Rask played hurt throughout the playoffs and Bruins didn't support him solidly in the defensive zone in their loss to the Islanders.  They also need more than one "Perfection Line" to carry them to a Cup.  I think they made a mistake giving up Torry Krug and Chara also. Big Z had one more year left in him on the second pairing; they should have promised him that to keep him.
Patrice Bergeron-the consummate pro and a credit to the game; Hall of Fame hands down.
Big game tonight for Les Habitants, but they are professionals as well and we of the faithful few hope for a victory.  Cool

What does this post have to do with riding motorcycles/Valkyries?  It should be on the PandM board.

That said, I could just have easily ignored the post (as others should learn to do with post they aren't interested in or are offended by).  Pro sports is one of the last things that interest me.

Tonight's game 2 is important, as the outcome will determine if it's going to be a short series win for Tampa, or evolve into a longer, more competitive series. With the temperatures here cooling down a bit, I don't like to waste time sitting in front of the TV when I can be out having a nice evening ride...but, this will likely be the most interesting of all games. Perhaps I will just watch the beginning of the game perched on the seat of my Valkyrie and see how it goes...if it's a dud I'll just fire up the old girl and head out for a ride around the lake.
There ya go...Valkyrie-related content for this thread  Grin Grin
I do agree though...the political BS back & forth can be cut out and sent over to the PAM board

McDavid won the Hart (and the Ted Lindsay) so that has to be some source of pride for those of the Oil persuasion; both writers and players unanimous choices.  Helluva player.
Good choice, well done to that young man; he's a joy to watch out there. cooldude

Please go away. moon

So I'll play the part of the whiney bitch:

What does this post have to do with riding motorcycles/Valkyries?  It should be on the PandM board.

That said, I could just have easily ignored the post (as others should learn to do with post they aren't interested in or are offended by).  Pro sports is one of the last things that interest me.

Being that your here......who do you think will win?  Wink
McDavid won the Hart (and the Ted Lindsay) so that has to be some source of pride for those of the Oil persuasion; both writers and players unanimous choices.  Helluva player.
Good choice, well done to that young man; he's a joy to watch out there. cooldude

Having the best player in the league and still sucking is almost worse than just plain sucking. For the last decade…or couple decades…I’d watch with the expectation that they’d lose.  Now we get our hopes up and just end up seeing a generational talent be wasted.

It must be very disheartening for him also. Hopefully they will get their act together before his skills are in decline.

I really don't care.  My 2 boys still love the Pittsburgh teams and don't understand why I don't still watch the Steelers every Sunday, or the Penguin games, but I really don't care.  The NFL ruined me with the whole kapernic thing, and all the other athletes (Olympics) using their sports as a podium to promote their causes, well, I don't care what they think.

Pro sports have priced themselves out of the range of a lot of people, I refuse to contribute to it.

But, I wish the best to your team, and by all means, if that is what you enjoy, go for it.  This is still a somewhat free country.

Yep, and if someone wants a certain content to his/her thread they should be very specific about their wishes, most, including me would honor their wishes. 'Serious' hockey fans include me, and being bitchy about posters in your thread is.. well.. bitchy..
The reaction was over the top and portends something more to it..  Some people harbor hateful or spiteful feelings for no reason other than they can't help it, sometimes there's more to the story.

It is an important game for sure. I imagine it would be possible to come back from down 2 games, but they can’t afford to get dominated again like game 1.

Cool

Tukka has never cemented a large fan base in Boston for some reason.  It may be his "aloofness" type attitude.  I've always respected his game and he's consistently in the top 5 of playing NHL goalies in stats.

Boston was down 2 of their best "D" in Carlo & Miller and Chara, while probably still a above average defense player and BIG, didn't have the power or speed of yesteryears.

David Krejci was revitalized with Hall & Smith and that line showed real promise as the second scoring line.  All three are excellent and play off each others skills.

You can't say enough good about Patrice Bergeron, the mans an hockey icon, the best 2 way player and a true benevolent human.  He has a booth he sponsors and fills with hospital kids every home game.  It's said he visits with them after the game.

As I stated, I'm a Bruins fan, so I'm not allowed to route for Montreal, but I do hope they win a couple in the series to make it interesting.
