Didn't see any tiny parachutes on any of 'em. It does seem like a novel way to stock a lake with fish. Got to be pretty exciting for the fish. Win win right there. |

There are historical accounts of people falling from planes (not skydiving) that survived. I think most involved snow and pine trees.
I don't believe I would survive the shock of the long fall, even before the sudden stop.
I don't mind extreme heights at all. But I'm not a fan of long falls. A 35 foot tower was long enough.

My highest jump was about 6 feet. On the side of the mountain at Big Sky. 1 second. Contorted, broke both knees. Maximum height today is 18". Ok, really 12". OK, maybe 6".
I like to fish though.

I have two brothers that are pilots whick kind of led me to a decision to jump when I was in college. I went through jump school and the day of our first jump they went down the line picking loads and bypassed me completely. What the, I thought until the jump master explained that it was 95 degrees and with the military T-10 shoots we were using, at my size (6'5" 300# at the time) I would hit the ground at about 45 MPH. Did not jump that day, and never went back. The 6 footer on the mountain was part of the accident, the two artificial knees are the reason for the trike. Loved skiing back in those days but sitting in a boat or on the trike is enough excitement for me today. |

That put me in mind of a namsploitation flick where the N V were in a flying chopper being interagated. 4 or 5 of them and when the 1st one didnot answer he was pushed out as was the 2nd the 3d and so on. The one that was left was talkin a mile a minute. When I worked in the parachute loft most butter bars asked this question-if I jump and the chute no open what do I do? Not Even cracking a smile I'd say-bring back the D ring and i'll issue you a different chute!  RIDE SAFE. |

One of them was telling about one of their members who bragged that he never got excited about jumping out of the plane on a fire. The jumpmaster heard him. So on next fire the jumpmaster doubled up fist and hit the kid between the shoulders just before he set out. The kid couldn't figure what he had a shoulder ack two days later.
I personally would never consider jumping out of a perfectly good air plane. highest jump/fall I have ever lived thru was when I feel off a log going down to get a drink from a creek in Montana. Fell about 13', land knees bent, relaxed, and twisted my left ankle. There was a 2" chunk of a branch under the grass/duff that I didn't see. It was a long 2 mile walk out to the truck. (The reason I fell of the log was the bark slipped)

Ya. We had to do an intentional tree jump. Holy crap. The pucker factor when the chute opens and all you see are the tip tops of a billion pine trees BTW. There’s no such thing as a perfectly good airplane. Life expectancy increases once you exit the plane. |

There was much talk of it happening, but, to my knowledge it didn't. But, anyway, I thought jumping was fun. It sure beat doing other things. Even Mae West's were fun. |

If HALO was used, it would be the plan for no one to ever hear about it.
Similar to our subs sneaking close to Russia and tapping their communication cables.
However, like all airborne missions in history, the problem of lack of support and ass hanging out in Indian Country makes them mostly a bad idea. It's never a good idea to send your very best trained and fit troops on (very likely) one-way missions.
Search and rescue is a different story.

I wanted to try skydiving - until I got to flight school in Pensacola.
Then the mantra became "if you have to parachute, it's been a bad day. If your rescue helo went down in the water - it was even worse" and also explains why lots of Naval TacAir would see if the helo dunker was down when they had to do water survival training.
The helo dunker was a shell built to resemble a H46 Chinook . You had to make 4 trips into the water in it. I'll spare you the details of what they involved.....except to say that each one was worse than the one before..

Doesn't HALO mean that you ran down the hallway in a big airplane and dived out the open barn door in the back? I static-line jumped a couple of times. The kind of thrill it would be to dive out one of those big hatches like that makes the hair stand up on my neck. I think Jess' "Indian Country" = "under fire in enemy territory"... -Mike |
