So since this project is new for me, should I do the de-smog mod? I'm looking at this kit.

https://redeye.ecrater.com/p/8464393/shiny-desmog-kit-ver-2p

You can see my bike here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5m82PKQhUE&t=256s

It is a so so 1986 GL1500CT Tourer I bought a couple months ago and is going to be restored, painted and modified/customized. It is my new project bike.

Any thoughts from the experts who live here at the VRCC?

I have a '99 CA-model Tourer. With all smog stuff intact. As long as it all works, I'll leave it. Should the smog equipment develop leaks or other problems I'll remove it all - including the carbs. I have a set of 49-state carbs waiting to go on at the next tear-down.

Mine is a CA bike too. Why change the carbs? Are these factory carbs off of a non CA bike? So far I'm running good but tear down for restoration is imminent. Now would be the time if there are solid improvements to be had such as reliability and milage, power too but I'm sure the power as is will be a plenty to haul around my 150 pound frame. I got this bike to restore and customize because it looks like a really cool machine with the F6C. I haven't ridden it but 1/2 mile so far. You can see my bike here.

I have 3 other bikes as well. Indian, Victory and Yamaha.

Unless there's a leak in one of the lines to be removed the de-smog fixes nothing but it does remove a few possible places for future issues.

And, a 20+ year old bike with a lot of vacuum lines is likely to be leaking somewhere.

And it's a PITA to expose and then chase them all round looking (leaks are often where the lines hook over nipples, and crack).

But if the bike is running fine, no need to rush into it.

It's a long term maintenance thing, not a performance thing.

I was doing a lot of work on mine, and it was a while I'm at it thing. It does clean up the engine bay and simplify things. Ridiing around there really is no difference in running. Its fine...
I used the Redeye kit and found it quality.....I'm glad I did it.

There is a really good YouTube video on it...

If you are going to strip the bike down like it looks you are, yes definitely do it.

All great info. Thanks everyone. I'm planning to give all the vacuum lines a look and probably replace them all anyway. I also have a smoke machine I can test them with. I may still do the de-smog while I have the bike apart.

Where All that crap resides and once accessed I'd clean it up and giterdone! As Carl stated-eliminates future vacum failures. If the bike pops and farts on decel while warmed up most likely culprit vacum leaks. Simple fix? Desmog! RIDE SAFE.

And looks like this.  Now some folks just bend the tubes and plug the lines, but if you yank it all off.....

It seems impossible to obtain the Shiny De-Smog kit any longer from the Redeye on ebay. I have checked back several times and it's "on hold". I tried to email him or them and they don't answer back. Not sure if the MFG is dead and gone or what. I don't suppose anyone has a kit on the shelf they never got around to and would part with?

Lacking that, has anyone attempted the freeze plug option. Anyone made their own kit. Those plugs I could turn on my lathe. The only hard thing I can see are the shiny brackets. But I'm betting I could make something that would work there as well. I assume by now maybe they either left the business or ran out of enough old Valkyrie customers to bother continuing to produce the kits.

I used freeze plugs on one of my Valks and it worked fine although not as pretty imo.  On the other bike I used a dremel to cut the ends and brackets off the tubing.  Filled the ends with JB weld and reinstalled as original with the tubing hole that was filled with JB facing inward so not seen.

Darryl at xf6 Customs makes (made) perfect kits for desmogging, including custom made block off plates (vrs freeze plugs).

They were a little spendy but very well made kits, and two kits were used on desmogging my two interstates.

I cannot open this site right now, and I don't know if it is site problems or my computer.

I bought the shiny desmog kit from Redeye and Pingel petcock (both now sold) but then decided against it once I realised you had to cut bits of the pair valve system off when removing all the hardware.
Instead, I just replaced all the vacuum and fuel lines, and a new petcock kit.
I just now make sure I always turn the petcock off when I stop, which has become second nature, although I do sometimes forget to turn it back on when I set off again, but you soon know about it.
It's all as it was originally meant to be and I like it that way.

I just looked at his site which has moved and is only a place holder now. I linked over to https://vtxtreme.com/ and there are only VTX rake parts there. No Valkyrie stuff or desmog kits. Dang.

If you’re going to always turn off the petcock anyway, you should have installed the Pingel. It’s a far superior fuel valve.
