Bastian, VA. Some of the best roads in the East

« Reply #520 on: September 27, 2024, 05:15:28 PM »

Of  all days , I  have  been dealing with 10" of rain in 48h..
Yesterday was 5" in the  rain gauge.. And  today another 5".
The  power went out at 10:30am. So I  have  been running  on genny power .
The  water at the  base  of my mountain has  my bridge   flooded.
My shop flooded. Thank goodness every thing is  up on pallets or  blocks  and  NO cords on the  ground
The  water is  receding . They power co. is  thinking  tomorrow evening the  power will be  fixed.
The  roads  look like  a  war zone , trees down  power poles .
I heard  4 trees  crack and  snap on the  mountain.
It's been to windy for  me  to get up on the  mountain.

It has  been a  year since Don crossed over.
There have  been good days and  bad.. This  week was the  worst.

I  miss him so much . It hasn't gotten any easier .

Hugs

WOW!!!!

That is some rainfall.  I checked our rainfall for the last two days and it was greater than 5" total.  Just half of what you collected.

And the other thing is we had a trip planned which we took this week.  So we got sort of trapped in VA for two days.

While we were gone, lots of rain and wind resulted in many falling trees and loss of power in our county.  For the first time (at least to my knowledge) in our county a Curfew was declared between 8PM and 6AM.

We won't know the real damage to our property until we get home tomorrow.  Also, we have a standby generator and it's been running for since 3 AM this morning.  I think that is the longest run time we have had since we had it installed.

Anyway, the places we have been through in NC so far are not too damaged.

I know you are hurting and while I cannot say I understand, I know that the parting is only temporary. You will be together again.   In the meantime, stay on message, enjoy the life no matter what it brings.

Thank God it stopped yesterday around  3pm..
They closed the  town down yesterday
ALL stores !
I have  been  running on the Genny, I shut it down around  10 pm last night.
Started  her  back up at 4am.. Been through 5 gal. of  fuel not too bad..
The  bridge  was flooded over yesterday, Jason had  to use  his excavator
To divert the water as ALL his dogs were standing on top of their  doggy houses!
The water was  rushing  off the  mountain in all the arroyos. It was crazy !
The shop flooded at 2 pm. I had never seen water like  that in 20 yrs.
Jason  lived her his whole  life , he said  he  never saw waters like  that before.

Both days I  had to start a fire as the  clean out of the wood stove was filling up with water, I did my best to bail it out of the tiny hole. So I thought a small fire would at least steam some before it got down.. It helped.

Right  now  I'm still running on genny power. it's almost 24h of no power.
     I'm hanging in there...

I went and got some stuff at the store the day the rain started.

Our power went out for a few hours that day, but came on during the
night, before the bad winds even started.

There's power out all around us, almost nothing in town is open. The
power company outage map shows us in a little area of no outage,
with outages all around us.

There's a tree blocking us from getting out (I can get the truck out)
but no other damage, just a million sticks and stuff to clean up.

I met the tree man down at the corner a few years ago when another
hurricane pushed some big pine trees over around the house. He's
coming back to remove the whole big copse of trees that is blocking
the road. Punisher says "you can't hide money"... he's wrong... it will be
hidden well when it is in the tree man's pocket  cooldude ...

We are still in generator power here.  Some things I planned for backup have not worked (antenna TV when internet goes down).  Will work on that tomorrow PM.

Lots of gas stations have long lines here in SC.

Prayers for the linemen and women working to correct the issues the storm has caused.  And I will take special interest in preparation for it not happening again (ie. power line right of way maintenance).

My new(er) Honda engine generator has an electric start (little battery always on a battery tender).

You know how much fun it is to fix a broken pull rope in the dark?  (out in the shed, with thunder and lightning, wind and torrential downpour with big tree limbs coming down)

Our little bridge is insignificant compared to all the other disasters ..
At least it's still intact and usable !
If Jason didn't relieve the water gate during the storm, that might have been a different story.

This video was 3h after the water started to recede..

I can't say I can feel your pain.  I have not been there.

What I can say is that you are a strong women and you will succeed in your "journey".

While I can't directly help, I can offer you a prayer and say that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

A very sad day on the  farm..

With a  very heavy heart we say see ya on the  other side to my beloved Poncho.

He was one  of our 3 first Longhorns (Corriente)

The only one  left of  the  original 3  is  Lefty. The  names  of the  first 3   were  Poncho, Lefty, Cisco.

Tory is  Cisco's first calf  born here on the  farm, back in '06...

Poncho  was 22yrs. old.. I  heard  a mournful moo  around  midnight last night.

While I was looking  for  meteors.

As  soon as I heard it I knew , what it was and  meant . Deep down I  was hoping I  was wrong.

Later  this  morning I confirmed it...  He  is  now buried not far from his friend  Cisco..

Lefty  is  very up set as is  Tory along with the rest of  the  herd.

The farm is going to miss Poncho very much.. He  was such a good  boy .

Always  kept his  family safe.

God Speed Poncho ! RIP ...

I had to start cutting firewood..
It's going to take me at least 1.5 months to get 6 cords in.. I hope !

All good just a lot of walking back and forth, I needed the tractor to bring the splitter,
and pull a tree down that was hung up. I didn't want to cut with trees hung up from the storm..
SO that had to be done before I could even start. 1.5 batteries used.
I stuck them both on the chargers for the night. I cleaned the saws. So they will be ready for in the morning.
I only got 1 load, split and stacked, and of course I had to walk back as I can't drive 2 things at once. I'll have to do it again tomorrow.
I think I better take some IB and ty to night. It did feel good to cut..
I love my GW saws..  smitten
It is so liberating for me.. Oh the splitter started up on the first pull  cooldude

That is very impressive work. Very impressive.

I have considered a log splitter in the past but since the only fire "place" we have is a "fire pit" I never got one.  We decided to have a natural gas powered indoor fireplace.  Same energy source powers our standby generator.

I am very impressed.   cooldude cooldude cooldude cooldude

That was on my line  fence , I was so glad , that they fell my way..
And  NOT on the  fence. That small tree in the  fore  ground ,
is what I  worked on and  a  few pole  that were down.
Today it hit that big tree in the  back, that is the top of  the tree.
It would take  my whole to wrap my arms around it, Yeah it's a biggen.
Should  get a nice  chunk of wood out of it.. Maybe  6 pieces from each  around  the  base.
I  must remember  my back brace  today ! LOL

Still have  32' of tree left But it's all cut in to size  just need to split it all..
I ran out of  day light and  steam..LOL
32' of tree ,I went threw 4  batteries  cutting up that length of  tree !
But  it took every bit of that 18" bar and  then some ..  So yeah it's a  big tree !
The   saw really did  great !  Really put a  battery saw to a  test!

Love hearing about your adventures, you could rival Bob Villa,  cooldude cooldude

Much easier on the eyes also.

LIFE ON THE FARM?
title.

As for the chain saw, I dunno, just couldn't get into electric. My ex son in law had a electric chain saw and a palm tree out in front that it took 3 batteries that just about made it. The palms are very fibrous but still I get nervous thinking I may not complete the job have to wait to finish. I like to start and hopefully finish in one go.

Some of the influencers make big money, we could use a few more like you influencing with real gifts and talents on the female side of things. Who knows you could start a whole new trend. Martha Stewart did it  Grin

You probably don't hear this enough as of late and I don't know you that well but, "I AM PROUD OF YOU". You have stayed true to yourself and memories in the face of some things that would overwhelm many, that takes grit, and speaks to Character.

 blush Thank You Robert..
Well  it took 2  loads  to get that tree out today.
I even had  to tilt the  splitter as  I  just couldn't lift them big ass logs.
So I split in 1/2  all 34 of them .
Then set the splitter the other way . And lifted the big halves up and  split.
They average  8 - 10 pieces. Per log. Yeah they are that big..

The  battery saw.  Is  nice  I  just can pull my saw  anymore.
It had  been rebuilt  3x  and  just kept getting harder  n harder  for  me  to start.
Don would  start it  for  me . And  it was fine .
I  have  2  batteries  for  each saw. So it works out well..
By the  time  the  battery is  ready for  a  swap . I'm ready for  a break.

Nice PICS!

Important dates such as Anniversaries. birthdays and such are hard when you've lost someone.

Sounds like you're keeping yourself very busy and that's a good thing.

It was probably a good thing that you opted not to climb up on that stool for a second bottle.

After 5 shots that might not have ended very well.  Evil

With my dear friend here, since  Saturday , we  got almost ALL  of  my fire wood in !
And  fixed a gate, and  swapped my winch to the Yella quad.

I'm so body sore, from my hands to my feet and  everything in between.
It's going to take  me  a  full day to recover.
