AS I am getting ready for a trip south got the bike out today just to check things out. When I squeeze the front brake lever the brake light doesn't come on. Back brake works fine with the light any suggestions

Probably just accidentally unplugged the switch right under the front brake lever.....Happens a lot.

It could also be the contacts in the handlebar switch have gotten dirty. Remove it and find a small hole in the housing. Spray some contact cleaner in it and work the switch. Replace and you should be good to go.
