Now, I'm not a fan of Texas in general, and the Cowboys in particular, and their owner Jones especially, but it's football time and hot damn, my favorite running back of all time came from Texas - The Tyler Rose!!!

Man oh man - he had it all. He had the speed to go outside and take it all the way, the moves to leave guys grasping at air, and the power to literally run over people.  The only guy even close to his talent nowadays is Adrian Peterson, but he can't hang on to the ball...

Earl Campbell was Superman.  Could wreck almost any defense.  It was a pleasure to see him running again.

As for the Cowboy haters, no team draws better in terms of ratings on TV.  No team has a better stadium.  And you may not like Jones, but you can't deny that he will spend the money to make his team better, which is a lot different than many NFL teams.  The worst thing he ever did was to mouth off about Jimmy Johnson.  That cost the Cowboys a record of 4 Superbowl wins in 4 years instead of just 3 in 4 years.

If you really want to hate, hate Daniel Snyder.  He can't get out of his own way to keep from screwing up in Washington.  If he'd just get out of the way and let the football guys do football, they would be a contender every year.

He was my hero when he played for UT.  I can't remember the number of times that I saw a defensive back about crap himself when he realized that Earl was not going to try to run past him but was going to lower his head and run through him.  It is sad to see the physical toll that his style of play has had on his later life.  Oh to make it bike related...I bought my Valk in Texas   Smiley

Barry Switzer was the head coach at Oklahoma University when Billy Sims (Hooks, TX) won the Heisman Trophy.  Switzer was asked did he think was Simms the best running back he had ever seen play.

Switzer said "no, Earl Campbell is.  But Billy is a terrific back with great speed and strength. He benches 400lbs.  He is a terrific back."

The reporter was not satisfied with Switzer's answer and asked, "You mean to say you don't think Billy Sims is as good a back as Earl Campbell?"

Switzer replied, "Billy Sims is a great running back, but Billy Sims is human.  Earl Campbell is not human."

We saw in person big Earl have his absolute worst day as a college running back; and we saw his best day.  Both days he was scary.

We trudge on.

As a life long Packers fan, I developed a general "dislike" of the Cowboys during the 90's.  Vikings and da Bears fans already know my sentiments toward their storied franchises!

True statement...Earl Campbell could not have been human (possibly an alien).

I am still a Steelers fan.  When they are not playing the Colts at least.  I am a HUGE Bill Cowher fan too.  I was hoping like MAD that Bill would replace Tony Dungy in Indy, and give our coaching spot some personality.  But no... we get Jim Caldwell.  He goes to the Super Bowl as a rookie... and I won't doubt his talent, or management skills.  But, I'd sure like some PASSION on the sidelines for a change.

That said... I REALLY like Rex Ryan too. Guy reminds me a lot of me.  Loud, obnoxious, fat ass, but you KNOW, down deep he's a solid dude.  Too bad he's with the J E T S.

Houston Oiler Related...

Just went to the funeral of Daryl Hunt, linebacker for the Oilers in the late 70's and early 80's, played 6 years for us.  For the past 20+ years, he worked at the same place I do and we have been friends for most of those 20+ years.  He was the first black football player at Odessa Permian High School and was portrayed in the Friday Night Lights movie.

Switzer said at the memorial service,  “He was special in every way. People around him realized that."

But I didn't know him then.  His football meant nothing to me.  He was a stand up guy, a gentleman, and always took care of business.  His parents were teachers and you could tell it by his work ethic and the way he carried himself.

I miss him already.

I guess there had to be some kind of insult coming from Scanner about anyone who likes the Cowboys not being a real football fan.

As for trying to make the team better, Jones does that.   Keeps bringing in people to try and improve the team.  Doesn't work all the time and the lack of playoff wins is frustrating.  However, Jones does possess 3 of the 5 Lombardy Trophies from the 5 wins out of 8 visits to the Super Bowl by the Cowboys.

Only the Steelers have more trophies.  The 49ers also have 5.  But no one has made it to the big game more than the Cowboys.

The Steelers were jokes in the 60s but since then, they have been a good team, often a super team.  I enjoy watching their games.  The rise of the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints was great to watch.  I also attend Texas A&M football games and 6-man football games around here.

Despite not being a real football fan since I also am a fan of the Cowboys.

Last I checked, the Seahawks are 0-1 in Superbowls.  But I'm sure there are still plenty of football fans rooting for them.

Here's hoping that Pete Carroll can turn things around and get them back to a competitive level again soon.

Sorry Rain, no insult intended.  What I meant was the TV ratings you cite, and the "America's" team garbage are because even those who know zip about football have heard of the Cowboys and their cheerleaders.  The Cowboys were great years ago when they built their reputation (Aikman, Landry, Staubach), but not so much in the last decade and a half.   And realize, any team arrogant enough to proclaim themselves "Americas Team" are just asking for derision when they fail.  And their owner Jones personifies that arrogance.

Always been a Cowboy fan but not so much in the later years. I grew up  with Randy White, Ralph Neely, Ed (Too Tall )Jones and my high school  hero Bob Lily. Those were real ball players then. Rmember the Ice Bowl game, some players said they never really recovered from that game.

And realize, any team arrogant enough to proclaim themselves "Americas Team" are just asking for derision when they fail.  And their owner Jones personifies that arrogance.

OK, just gonna clear this up and I'm done with my lonely quest as the only Cowboy fan who will defend the team on this forum.   angel

The term "America's Team" was not originated by the Cowboys.

From Wikipedia

The term America's Team is a popular nickname in American sports that most often refers to the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. The nickname originated with the team's 1978 highlight film, where the narrator opens with the following introduction:

They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team."

The term is recognized and often used by media outlets, including ESPN, Yahoo!, HBO Sports and Sports Illustrated. On their Top 10 show, the NFL Network named the Dallas Cowboys' "America's Team" as the #1 nickname in NFL history.

Bob Ryan, now Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys while preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film.  He was quoted as saying: "I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television."

Ryan told the NFL Network, for their Top Ten Nicknames show:

"I saw all these fans in away stadiums. Hey, they're the most popular team in the country. How can I use that? Why don't we call them "America's Team"? "

During the Cowboys' first game of the 1979 season, a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals (which Dallas won 22-21), the television announcer for CBS introduced the Cowboys as America’s Team and the name stuck.

Dallas' Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry originally did not approve of the appellation of America's Team. He felt that it would give opposing teams extra incentive to play harder. Eventually he gave in and actually came to like the name.

Just as a true "handle" aka nickname that we get from our fellow riders, "America's Team" was given to the Cowboys, not originated by them.

Success often breeds contempt.  The strange part is, the Cowboys really haven't been that successful in the last 16 years and they still breed contempt.

What team do I hate?  The NY Yankees.  Why?  Because they are so successful. But I respect their drive to always be #1.

Having lived in Pittsburgh for nearly 20 years, we're definitely Steelers fans.  Its mandatory.  Religion is not as controversial in Pittsburgh as football is.  The Cowboy proclamation of being America's Team just made me always root for whoever was playing against them.  We found it tough rooting for the Cardinals when we moved out to Phoenix, but you gotta root for the home team.  The difference we found between rooting for the Cardinals versus the Steelers is with the Steelers, no matter how bad they are doing in the beginning, you always have it in the back of your mind that they could pull it out and win.  With the Cardinals, its no matter how good they are doing at the beginning you've got it in the back of your mind that they're going to screw it up.  Coach Wis has really turned the team around though.  We thought it was great when the Steelers played the Cardinals in the superbowl - didn't know who to root for, but it was good watching two Steelers-coached teams playing each other.

Amen! Horrible way to treat a living legend! The Boys are still my team.

I hate to bust a bunch of bubbles but Earl Campbell had nothing to do with dallas,,,
he played for Houston Oilers,,,unless i was smoking something those years,,,

also when Bum Phillips became a saint the Oilers went to hell....

THANK YOU!
How did this become about Dallas?  The only connection Earl Campbell has to Dallas is how many times he put the hurt on them.  Of course, that wasn't Dallas specific.  He did that to any team the Oilers were playing that week.

You're right about Bum, too.  The day Bud Adams chased him out of town, he sowed the seeds of discontent that made the entire town hate him.  In a broader sense, the "Titans" are now in Nashville because Texans were happy to see Bud Adams leave, even if they had to give up their beloved Oilers to achieve that goal.

Thanks for the memories, with that highlight reel.  He was the best running back I've ever seen.

Yo Jabba! I am another Steeler fan. Back in the 70's, my 5 year old son could name every player on Steelers team. His favorite player was Terry Bradshaw and/or Mean Joe Green. Wow, what a team!
I agree that Earl Campbell was one of the greatest, but Franco Harris was no slouch. I love to watch football and it is coming up real soon.

I played football for 13 years.  Into college.  I LOVE the game too.  I am not a diehard steelers fan... but there is always that seed there.  I really dig the Colts.  Been a fan since they came to Indy in '84.  I thought Bob Irsay was a jackass for how he left Baltimore.  But his son Jim SEEMS to be a stand up guy, even though he is a Liberal.

I will always have the pittsburgh seed though.  They will always be a team I pull for, when I am not cheering the local Colts.  I LOVED Bill Cowher.  I was a reall Lynn Swann and Terry Bradshaw fan.  I still think Terry is a guy that seems like he'd be a LOAD of fun to be around.  He's funny as heck and is willing to laugh at himself.  "Hey!!  Ya'll forgot to COOK this!"

Jack Lambert.  That was a stud.  210 lb MIDDLE linebacker that was FEARLESS.  He's not big enough to play SAFETY today.

Oh... for the hard nosed game that was played by mortal men.  The guys playing today more resemble cyborgs if you ask me.  They are  hybrid machines.  Unreasonable animals based loosly on human beings.

Bum Phillips had the best line I ever heard from a coach...

The interviewer asked him why he always took his wife with him on road games, and Bum says "because she's too damn ugly to kiss goodbye".

He must have been one tough sob.....
