There are good pictures on some of the most recent threads regarding this exact subject.

I just had this issue 1200 mi from home.  I am assuming you get nothing when the stater button is pushed and the headlight won't come on.  Take the switch out of the handlebar casing.  Spread the plastic switch apart and pop the black top off.  Clean all the contact points.  I had to bend the 2 small contacts on the bottom white part slightly up to get a solid contact.  You can check it without putting it all back together in the handlebar.  Just make sure you get contact with the 2 small contacts on the bottom white part of the switch.

Are you done yet?

rattlebars

Most of it involves removing and reinstalling 4 screws on the left side handlebar housing [edit] RIGHT HOUSING. 2 external, 2 internal. They may or may not be a source of frustration. Don't misplace nor drop the 2 little internal screws. I guess you could screw them back in place temporarily to keep track of them. And you don't use a micro precision phillips screwdriver on those because the "X" on the head is larger than it looks.
