Reason for not going into Galax ,Va was a huge Labor Day Weekend Flea-market....All the rooms rates I checked would have been over $100.00 a night after tax  Sad   Dude at Alleghany Inn seemed very nice and said he had no problem whatsoever with us hangin' around the bikes in the parking lot shootin' the s**t   cooldude ( This has been a problem at one of the Asheville , NC motels we used and that motel will never get another dime of my money ) .

Mark already told me of the flea market conflict...... it's all good Joe (thanks for the legwork, and the good price).

Hard to believe a flea market can cause traffic/motel problems..... I avoid flea markets and yard sales like the plague.  (how much for these XXXL yellow skivvies?)

The sweet girl taking my reservation made a great first impression.

If there are any odd-men-out for rooms, I discovered you can get a rollaway for $5 more.

Heck, that little stock car race down the street almost screwed us over for getting rooms in
Wytheville last year...

I'll be there at Maggie, and at Sparta...

Jess you better believe it, the last time I rode trough there, I think it was in Hillsville VA they had a Gun/flea/antique thing going on, hell, it was bigger than most state fairs and we had to travel well over a 100 miles to find a room. I guess sometimes it pays to plan ahead

we'll definitely cross paths...we're getting on parkway north and east of Asheville....and riding to Maggie as our destination. About 50-60 Rune folks.....hard to miss us!

There's a new biker friendly restaurant/bar in Maggie. It's called the Tikki House. Just opened up 3 weeks ago. It's real close to the Wheels of Time Museum. friendly folks....several Bike Nights with specials. That's where we're doing our lunch on our group ride.

Probably see ya' that Saturday Joe.............
I'll keep a eye out for y'all Tim....We'll roll out of Maggie around 9:00 a.m. it goes without saying the highest point will be our first stop.

I'm going to leave it up to the folk's that are ridin' with me back to God's Country ....Hit the big road or ride The Blue Ridge Parkway back south....If we come back the BRP it's not likely a meet will be possible as that will take all day getting back to Chreokee and then crossing The Great Smoky Mountain and dealing with the Galtinburg traffic from hell cause of the holiday weekend....If we take the blue road a meet for supper might be possible  ???

I just spoke with the staff @ the Days Inn in Waynesboro.

Two of the original 10 rooms that they set aside for us are still available.

They assured me that they would make more rooms available if needed (additional rooms aren't guaranteed to be together).

If you're thinking about going on this ride, remember that the cut off for guaranteed rooms and rate is Monday August, 29th.

So if you're thinking about it................... don't think too long.

See everyone there !

Road construction heads up on the parkway y'all:

MILEPOST 232 - 237

The Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed to all traffic from Milepost 232 at Stone Mountain Overlook to Milepost 237 at Air Bellows Gap beginning July 15, 2011 and continuing until the summer of 2012. This closure is due to the reconstruction of the Parkway's 32,000 linear feet of historic rock masonry walls in that section. Detour traffic signage will direct Parkway visitors around the closed area via US Highway 21 and NC Route 18 through Laurel Springs and Sparta.

And as luck would have it, they were doing construction on the detour route when I went through there earlier this month, so plan around that timewise.

I won't be on the ride, but my better half and I did the entire BRP in the beginning of August, and there's a closure and a detour that I wanted to let y'all know about (I know it's in the NC portion, but just in case anyone wanted to continue that far down):

This link has a link to a map of the closure and detour:
http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

MILEPOST 232 - 237

That will definately affect Smokin' Joes group, but not too much.

The detour's are always well marked and truth be told some of them are nice fun roads to ride  cooldude   ....Bring It....LET'S RIDE  Smiley  Right now I'm hoping Irene stay's off the BRP if she spins tornado's and high winds this ride could be a bust with the Parkway un-passable from downed  tree's  Sad

There's a happy thought.

Hopefully, it is gone before the ride.

Irene will be gone by the ride no doubt it's the aftermath we'll deal with " IF " tornado's and high winds hit the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Parkway they'll shut it down . With all the millions of people this hurricane will affect with lose of life, power outage, major infrastructure damage , etc the powers that be will not be concerned about the Blue Ridge Parkway being impassable.

Yeah, I copy Joe.  After I posted, I thought... yeah even if the storm is gone, if dozens of big trees (and power lines) are down, or rock slides, they may take considerably longer to deal with.

We'll all be watching the bitch Irene closely as she moseys up the East coast.

I do hope that Irene turns out to be nothing ( I watch alot of weather channel in fact my TV is on that channel about 95% of the time on mute ) . If it's what they claim it's very possible that I'll be called out to go help with the downed powerlines  Sad

Joe,

There is a BIG difference between what the weather channel is saying about Irene and what our local weather people are saying.

Right now our local weather people are talking like we are going to have any effects from Irene.

http://weather.wsls.com/us/va/roanoke/general/sevdayCustom.html

They aren't even thinking that we'll get any rain.

So we'll just have to see.
