Is this the correct size (.453") valve stem for the Valk wheel?

Install issues, i.e. no cutting or grinding the chingus that the OEM plastic clip holder thingie fastens to?

Hey Sheets,

I have the 90 degree Patchboys stems in two bikes and love them.  But if you're about to go with metal valve stems, check out the ones from Jake Wilson, featured prominently in the thread at the link below.

The neat thing about them is the nut is on the outside of the wheel.   cooldude

What is the big hub hub about whether the nut is on the inside or the outside?

Nut inside to me looks better.

I've had them since late 97 and not an ounce of trouble.

Mine happen to be the straight ones as I have after market chrome wheels, but they are PatchBoy.

But, to answer you question:

All you have to do is not get the rear quite tight enough and then a few weeks later have to break down the entire rear end and tire just to get to the ugly little nuts.  I only had to do that once for the pretty little nut on the outside to reveal itself as a better idea.  YMMV

Yep, if you are going to go with the metal aftermarket stems, having the tightening nut on the outside where you can observe it would be the better alternative.

Of course the addition of locktite to the nut "on the inside" would give the user an extra feeling of safety and the accompanying "less worry" about failure.

The nuts on the Patchboy valve stems are pretty thin. I use locktight on them as well but I'm not sure there is enough thread contact to stop them from vibrating off.
I like the Jake Wilson stems much better.

Is there enough threads on the Patchboy to replace the thin nut with a nylock nut?

Now that's a great question.  Too bad I don't have a definitive answer, but my swag is Yes.

The two jam nuts are .286" thick combined.  The closest nylock I have is a 5/16, is .332" tall, and the nylon is, of course, recessed from the top.  With sufficient squish applied to the grommets, I believe all of the nylon in a nylock would be engaged.

I believe that Nylock makes a jam nut too so you maybe able to get a thin nut for replacement.

I just installed one today. There is room for two thin nuts plus a few theads to spare so I'd say yes, and that's a great Idea. I think you could trust a nylock nut and not have to fool with locktight. The supplied nuts are so thin it's almost impossible to get two wrenches on them to really lock them.

I too installed some today.  Paid $9 at Cycle gear for a set of four.  I used red locktite as well as the double nut setup.  I had a "cone" wrench from a bicycle shop to tighten mine up.  I didn't want to take a chance of it ever comming off accidently.

Does anybody know the thread size for the Patch Boy nuts.? I stopped by my local Ace today, and nothing fit it.  It is a real fine thread, I believe M8 of 5/16".  Has anyone actually used a nylon insert nut?

(I may have to make a couple of measurements.)

Thanks / Pluggy

Use red loctite and the double nuts supplied and it won't come off.

All things considered, I opted for the JW brand. I like the idea of the nut on the outside. They showed up today. I can only assume at this point it is a plug and play installation with no mods to the piece the existing plastic keeper fastens to.  thanks for the insight.
