Jeeeeeesh......what a bioatch. Okay.....besides enlisting the the help of any random 3 year old with extremely small hands, how the heck does the center cover come out of there. I've got the bolts out of both sides, the cover is loose and freely moving, bank angle sensor wires have enough slack in them to get a little more access to the lock assembly (but not much), got the retainer clip off of the lock assembly.........and that's it. Where do I go from here? Can't figure out what to do next. Thought maybe if I can get the latch cable off, I can get the rest of it out....but there's not enough slack (or room) to get it out either. Help!!!

This is from the manual, I haven't tried to remove one.
Remove the seat (page 2-2). Remove the side covers (see above). Disconnect the bank angle sensor 3P (White) connector located under the frame cross member. Remove the two bolts and collars. Carefully release the cover tab from the grommet. Remove the latch assembly bolt and assembly. Remove the seat lock cable from the latch assembly and remove the center cover. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

I check the manual before I started this. I'm still looking for the "latch assembly bolt". Maybe I'm blind, but I'm not seeing it.

Went to the garage and pulled the side cover. I don't see any bolt. Looks like the latch is held in place with a spring clip.

Let me know how the removal goes. When my replacement left side cover (which I broke taking off) comes in, I need to remove my center cover if I am to have all three pieces chromed.

You're doing everything right, jsut not enough cussing and you probably need at least 2 more beers. The tab is real tight and hard to get out of the grommet. Even when everything is loose it's just as tight to remove as the alternator. Good Lick, I don't want to ever do mine again.

If you have chrome engine hanger covers, pull off the clutch lever side. It is easier. here is a link http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,37837.0.htmlIf you have a flexible screwdriver, that helps to remove the bank sensor. something like this pic once that is removed, slide the center cover up and out. I cut the top off before I put it back in.

BF...You have only two things that are screwing you up...Disconnecting the bank angle sensor, and the tab with the grommet...If you can get some bright light in there, I think once you see the tab/grommet that center piece will fall right out for you. With all the dirt, and crud back behind the center piece it's sometimes hard to see it when it's covered up. Good luck.

When I replaced my clutch last summer, that center piece was the hardest thing to get off. After that the clutch was relatively easy!

Just did mine, and yes it's a bish. I found that removing the bolts and collars first, then you can tilt the cover forward enough to get a long phillips in there to get the bank angle sensor off, then it takes a bit of force to get the cover to pop up out of the grommet. I ended up trimming some around the wiring on the right side, which gave a little extra slack when putting it back in.

This has been bugging me all day and I've been thinking about this all afternoon while at work. Read all of your responses while I was at work and couldn't wait to get home to mess with it again. Just got home from work, walked straight into the garage and stuck a 100 watt drop light as close as I could get it and went at again. Kept on screwing with it untill...... I got it out. WOO HOO. Thanks. You guys rock.

My suggestion may be a little late but if you do everything that you did and spray Glass Cleaner(WINDEX) in the general area of that Rubber Grommet, the Windex will help that Tab slip out of the Rubber Grommet alot easier. It is alot easier to clean up than most lubricants, andwont damage the rubber grommet..It also works on installing the cover,as the Windex will mostly evaporate .I hope that this helps you and others .Bert.

BF, I don't remember having trouble getting the center cover off, but....when I painted the Valk and put it all back together (and I'm no mechanic), I thought getting all the wiring back together was a pain, but it all went ok. It was all finished and I thought everything was good, I turned the key on and NOTHING. I was stumped. To make a long story short, I reattached the bank angle sensor upside down. After finally figuring that out, and turning the bank angle sensor the right side up, everything worked. So, pay attention when you put the bank angle sensor back on. Of course, I didn't even know what the bank angle sensor was. When I took it off, I said to myself, "I wonder what this thing is". Well, I know what it is now.....

Need feedback! I am getting ready to have my side covers chromed. After reading the horror stories about removing the center cover (let alone re-installing it), I am wondering just how noticeable it would be just to leave the black center cover alone. My bike is black also. I'm thinking removing it is a lot of headache for very little benefit.
Thanks,

My side covers are chrome. The center is blue. I have a chromed center cover on the shelf. Can you guess my vote?

Personally, I don't think it'd be all that noticable. The center cover is a pita, however, it can be done without damage to the cover or losing a finger or two. All that's needed once you take the bolts out from each side is a long + screwdriver, probably a good pair of needle noise pliers and a ton of patients. A beer or two wouldn't be a bad idea either. Before you attempt to take it out or put it back in, you might want to consider covering the shiny side with some of that blue painters tape and cover the starter and the other parts in there with a cloth or two.

JC's comment about Bank angle sensor is right on, wait till you have tilted it enough, than worry about getting your big paws in there. I had to remove it twice in the past year once to remove alternator, I never swore so much at Honda. Another to repair one of the tabs that broke on Center cover ,more swearing at Honda. I found the seat lock to be a huge pain in the Not the best design.
