One of my ridin' bud's ( Wimp ) has a buddy with a Screamin Eagle he rode with us last Nov. down to The Land Between The Lakes. We stopped for lunch and he told me he wrote a check for $45,000 for the bike I pretty much called him stupid cause truth be told the bike is not really that nice He then said to me " Well Joe I did get the extended warranty " . If his bike is worth $45,000 then that one should bring $30,000 easy

I saw a Screamin Eagle Ultra (or was it Electra?) Glide and the sticker was around $35,000. Granted it was a nice bike...the paint was beautiful and the sound system was killer (it practically shook the bike on the side stand like it was running!). But I could build a pretty nice custom for $35,000.

I would bet it rides like a rocket on rails. I will never know because I'm not spending that kind of money on a bike that looks like you couldn't stand to ride more than 150 miles.

Actually I find that riding position (relaxed sport/sport tourer) to be extremely comfortable for long days. Lots of people do actually. You'll see more Iron Butters on those then you will on laid out cruisers. That said, 30k IS way too much money.

I notice they list torque, but somehow neglected to list the horsepower... No matter, we can calculate the horsepower if we know the torque and RPM... Engine Torque: 100 ft-lb (135 Nm) Engine Torque (rpm): 3,250 And horsepower = RPM * Torque / 5252 so, plug in our values, and..... X = 3250 * 100 / 5252 Solve for X, and the horsepower is 61.88... And yes, granted this is assuming that the peak horsepower is generated at peak torque, but it's generally pretty close. So for $20,000 you get a vehicle that puts out..... 62 horsepower... To each their own, but I think I'll be keeping my Valk. Might even pick up a spare one...

It's not about that. It's about the dyno curve and how the power feels. Besides which, horsepower is something of a mathematical illusion and actually not all that relevant to anything with a solid connection to the road. Torque is real and is what makes you move.

anvil, i appreciate your point about the relevance of the curve but hp is a real term, it's not a mathematical illusion . there is a well defined mathematical linkange between hp and torque.

Horsepower and torque both matter...
If torque was the be all end all, a single man with a very long pole attached to a pivot point could generate nearly unlimited torque (Look at the numbers you can generate with a simple torque wrench) Torque is power, which is important, but horsepower is work over time, which is also important... Neither is much use without the other, but they're both important...
And yes, I know Harley's aren't about power (Horse or otherwise) and all about branding, and as I said, to each their own... But ya' gotta admit horsepower wise they're pretty pitiful, especially for the premium price they charge...

I know, but my point is that horsepower is a mathematical equation of work done over time. It's still somewhat illusory because time is relative. Torque is what gets a big, heavy bike off the line and as such, it's more important for the machines we ride.

i think that you're right on suggesting that folks should look at more than one parameter when assessing performance. Exactly, which is why I find it so amusing that Harley thumps their chest about the torque numbers, but neglect to list any other performance numbers... Anyway, now that BigAl's managed to hijack yet another thread into Harley vs. the Rest of the world, we can get back to the crazy cool, but too expensive bike that this was originally about...

But ya' gotta admit horsepower wise they're pretty pitiful, especially for the premium price they charge... No I don't have to admit that. In some ways the H-D engine (despite the HP deficit) is superior to the Valk engine. Each has it's strengths, for instance the Valk likes to rev and keeps making power when that big twin has long tailed off. But if that's not the kind of riding you do then you might not care, you might prefer the broader, flatter curve of the H-D engine. And the engine is not the only thing you're paying for in a bike. H-D chrome is head and shoulders above anything coming out of Japan and chrome is important on these bikes.
