1998 Valk - 73,680 miles on her. I purchased a rebuilt Alt from a guy whos name and web site were given to me from here. I get it put in and it sounds like a bad power stearing pump whining. So I call the guy and he sends me another to replace it and this one sounds the same but not nearly as bad. Upon replacing it I put the ALT stay on the back side (outside) of the alternator then put the bolts on then the cover. Have I done something wrong, regarding putting it back together? it is putting out 13 to 14 volts or amps which ever it is. Any Ideas?? Should I ask the guy for another replacement?
TIA Greggh

It shouldn't make noise. You put it together right. It wouldn't bolt up if otherwise. 14 volts is where it should be at least.

Could it have gotten damaged during shipping?? It was packaged really good? And the box showed no physical damage.

If it was MARS that did the work:
I think he runs them to test his work.
Can't imagine he would send out a bad alternator.
Alternators do make a rotational noise in operation due to the brushes running on the commutator.
He does warranty his products.
The guy is very nice and trustworthy,
My suggestion would be to call him and discuss your concerns.

It was MARS (Ken) that I got it from. Really nice guy, He replaced the first one with no quarrels. I have yet to talked to him regarding the second replacement. Just wanted to see if I was being over cocerned or if I had a ligit concern!
I was going to just ride it and see how the charging goes, brand new battery so I should not have any problems there.
Has anyone else bought from him and experience the same kind of noise I am?
Gregg.

I replaced my original alternator with one of the MARS higher output ones. I immediately noticed the noise. I didn't trust it for a while because of that and carried my old one for a spare (worked fine at 96,000 miles). That was 35,000 miles ago. Mine is much quieter than it was (I don't know if it is even still making that noise), but it has worked fine.

I have a MARS. Its been on for a year and 12,000 miles with no problem. And yes, it makes more noise than the original. 1998 Valk - 73,680 miles on her. I'll add another 2 cents-- I ordered and rec'd my rebuilt alt. from MARS and installed it. During the install I found the "real" no charging problem and fixed it. I called about getting my own alt back.. Too late!! Anyway, I also noticed way toooo much noise coming from the rebuilt unit, called and he sent a replacement (more cost to me for shipping the first unit back to him in addition to shipping my OEM unit to him) I borrowed a NEW (in the box) OEM unit, installed it and all was QUITE. Installed the second rebuilt=noisy! I removed and reinstalled the new OEM unit, again=quite! I bought new alt. drive dampers and reinstalled the MARS unit with the new dampers=still noisy, but not as bad, but no where near as quite as the new OEM unit. In-asmuch-as-the MARS unit had a one year warranty, I decided to run it for a while. It's now a year and 15K miles later and its out-put is still 14.2 volts and it IS much quiter.

my understanding of why the Mars units are noisey for awhile are.. when i went to my local alternater rebuilder and asked to have the armiture rewired the same way Mars does his. I was told that the fan on that armiture has to be pressed off in order to do the rewire. after it is rewired the fan has to be pressed back on. in my opinion pressing that fan off and back on is going to tweek that fan. and there is no way to get that thing perfectly straight again that fan has a limited amount of space to run in so somtimes if it's to close to the case it will make a whiring noise Second reason for the noise is Mars uses thicker wire than from factory. which will make them hold up better. the thicker wire is gonna add extra weight to that armiture. besides the wire the dip coating he puts on is thicker and sometimes it will make contact with the fields until it wears down. so besides being noiseier than stock i would'nt worry about it.
