I am getting surface rust on the weld areas of my solo rack and seat rail, UGHHH! I remove it by using steel wool (oooo) and Mothers polish. The question I have is, what (if anything) can be done to keep it from coming back? TIA

Once you remove all (I mean every little bit) spray it down with WD 40 and DONT wipe it off of an hour or so.......do this every day for a week or two and that thing will never rust again. I did this to my whole motorcycle when I lived in Okinawa for 3 years. EVERYTHING rusts in Okinawa except my bike....I think they needed a special ship to bring in cans of the stuff just for me

Bad thing about using steel wool is it starts shedding very tiny pieces you may not see and those pieces are a starting point for more rust. See if you can find some stainless steel, bronze or copper wool.

Chris and X Ring:
Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to implement both of them, so I can keep the shiny side up!

I tried oxalic acid on some really rusty parts recently... I think it would really fix up surface rust, the rust on these parts was deep... http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,42164.0.htmlI wonder about the wd40... chrome doesn't rust, rust "bleeds" from the base metal through pin-holes in the chrome... I bet the wd40 goes down the pin-holes when you soak the part like Jeff describes... I used to pretty much soak my entire dirt bike in wd40 after the car wash on the way home... -Mike

once you clean the rusted pieces, use your Wife's clear fingernail polish to seal the crevices where you removed the rust.. Fingernail polish can always be removed with acetone if you need to re-do this cleaning.
You can always have the parts re-chromed in the future....and they will look better than new (show chrome).

I went out today to try and find some stainless steel, bronze , or copper wool. Went to Northern Tools, Lowes, and Home Depot. No luck at any of these places.
Any body have any suggestions as to where I might find any of these?
Thanks
