Attention climate change deniers - the planet is rapidly heating up. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is out with a new report showing that the last year - from June of 2011 to May of 2012 - was the hottest year ever since NOAA began recording annual temperatures. That included the fourth warmest winter - the second warmest summer - and the warmest spring ever recorded. On top of that - the science journal Nature is also out with a new report warning that the planet is reaching a tipping point - and its ecosystems are on the verge of irreversible change, which could mean disaster for humans.

The report even warns of the possible extinction of our species within just a few generations, once this tipping point is reached. Something has so badly rotted in our culture that we no longer look out for future generations - or care about leaving them a habitable planet. Instead - we care just about short-term profits for oil barons in Texas and Kansas, and it could cost us everything our species has worked for.

Let the talking points commence.  Roll Eyes

No one is denying the planet is warming up. It's a cyclical thing that has been happening since the earth has been there! DUH!!!

It's the reason for the warm-up, and the regulations and exorbitant moneys spent to control the heat up in a feeble attempt to control mother nature that has some of us P.O'ed. tickedoff

Quit stirring the pot to keep beating the same dead horse!!! Talking point done! Over and out! I'm gone! Lips Sealed

Everyone wants to believe the earth is so big we cant passably impact the ecosystem.   Sad Do you have a globe in your home? The varnish on the outside is thicker than our atmosphere. Don't mind me though, It's just our kids that will pay the price. Cheney was right after all,  Sad ( deficits don't mater )

warms up, cools down, warms up, cools down.  remember the 70's when Al Gore's right hand man was predicting an ice age was coming. Evil

was he wrong then or now? Evil

scientists/metoerologists can't accurately predict how many or how severe hurricanes are going to be a couple months out, but they KNOW with CERTAINTY the Earth is going to warm up X degrees? (and they have been WAY off on their predictions)

here's a key fact that has held true for the ages, Science is often wrong. Roll Eyes

you almost had us, in 2003 70 some percent of the US population believed in 'global warming' today it's down in the 30 percentile

Fear ye not!   I have discovered that I am the discoverer (or at least associated) with time travel.  I will correct your ill wanings while I travel throughout time.

I will begin with our emergence from the latest mini ice age 12000 to 15000 years ago.  I have some questions for those guys that left cities under water.    While I am at it, I will of course have to figure out who and exactly why a few other things were done.

I know I am capable of these things, because I found it in the Bible.....using the same software that supposedly references the 9-11 attacks and twin towers and osama bin laden being responsible.

Are the two related...in my mind yes... because global warming, though I don't doubt it exists, is as likely to change as the next major volcanic eruption, meteor impact or if you buy the retoric, self correction by human extinction.  I predict that the earth will survive and self correct.

While I refuse to hug trees, I do acknowledge their existence, and consider that MONEY is driving the global warming BS as it did Y2K a decade ago.....

Did I mention that I got a working I/S cb for less than 50 bucks that works.....  bike related..

see ya.....

Perhaps in your spare time you might like to look up a couple historical facts ... you may recall the more recent one, Mount. St. Helens in 1980.
Also, the large astroid impact craters around the world.
Vredefort in South Africa = 300km diameter
Sudbury in Canada = 250km diameter
Popigai in Russia = 100km diameter
And as recent as another one in Russia in 1908 ....

Any of these events provide more pollutants to Earth's atmosphere than all mankind's efforts in our entire industrial history combined !

No matter what trumped up numbers any side comes up with, the marks of these events stand as mute evidence that our old Earth will handle our puny contributions, in all reality as I see it, we couldn't really change the overall environment if we tried so lets just all work together to straighten out the messes we might actually be able to affect and go ride our Valks as often as possible !!!

stop picking on thespian. he happens to be right this time. i just came apon an article that was printed by the washington post. the article read that the arctic ocean is warming up. icebergs are growing scarcer and the seals are finding the water too warm. it also reports that fisherman are finding warm water fish much too far north. it said that exploration expiditions are finding all the icebergs are definately melting and the water level along the coastlines will rise as a result.... this article was picked up by the washington post from the associated press. WAIT FOR IT..... yup 90 years ago, this november 2, 1922.   this line of B.S. was tried again in the mid 70's when a group from the left turned the heat up and closed the windows on a friday afternoon after the last sesion congress had for the week. when everyone came back to work(if thats what you call it) the building was a little warm and it was brought up that it was because of global warming. a janitor then found the thermostat and lowered it and interupted congress while in sesion to open the windows and explain that someone accidentally turned on the heat in july..   WHAT A SCAMMMM. JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH MONEY GOOD 'OL AL GORE HAS MADE OFF THIS FARCE.......

While I don't consider Thespian a Troll, I will say this, I don't agree with this or a number of other topics he has recently posted.  I will reference this Pew study as one of the possible distinctions.

http://www.people-press.org/2012/06/04/section-1-understanding-the-partisan-divide-over-american-values/

Doesn't matter what the topic is, there is a definate division in this nation.  There are distinct differences in the perspectives of Americans.  I'm thinking the tool we so loving utilize called the Internet is most likely to blame.  Way to easy to put incorrect data out there that have to be true, after all, I read it on the internet.  I also blame our bias'd media, not that it has ever been neutral but, it has moved much farther left than I've ever known it to be.

While I don't believe the "Sky is Falling" again, there are folks that do believe it.  I don't pretend to understand why they believe it, someone they think is important or educated says it's so, I guess.  Similar to Al Gore, he's a "global warming" advocate and just how much has he invested in money making schemes if he gets the idea sold?  Just call me a skeptic, let me know how it all turns out, I'll be out catching some wind.

This issue has been politicized to the point where I don't think its possible to get the straight story on what's really going on.  Its no longer science, its more like religion.  You must accept the dogma or you are an infidel.  You can't hope to get funding from the government or any major institution unless the outcome of your research is in line with with the dogma.  In science, you're supposed to be open minded, question things and constantly look for ways to prove or disprove the prevailing hypothesis.  One method to prove something is true is to show that the opposite is not true, but with this, if its unusually hot, its global warming, if its unusually cold, its global warming, if there's more ladybugs than normal, its global warming, etc.  The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but what do I know...I'm going to go ride my bike.

I would be more inclined to think that those who push the global warming thing were genuine if there wasn't always the massive wealth transfer push that the warmers push so hard as the solution. I personally don't think man has much to do with it. Also bothers me that if it were so, why is the "bad guy" always the free & capitalist countries but never the developing 3rd world nations?
Sounds like more of the same thing with a different bogeyman to push it along.

I agree, this global warming thing is cyclical. I've read various historical reports and it has been documented that the Vikings about 600-700 years ago actually sailed through the area that everyone was recently excited about, saying with the melting of the sea ice they now have a shorter route through the arctic. It was melted then and they could come and go through that area we've always known to be frozen.

As for human made pollutants causing atmospheric problems, just keep in mind that the first few hours of the Iceland volcano eruption a year or so back actually did away with all the so-called improvement from regulating.

"Tipping point". Another one of those annoying buzzphrases that focus groups, PACs and Chicken Littles like to throw around to make themselves appear smart and scare people.

I don't deny that climate change exists, I'm just not sold on it being a man-made phenomenon. In fact, the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of it being part of the earth's normal cycle and no matter what we do, we're not gonna stop it. COULD it be man-made? Yeah, it could. But that's not at all what the evidence suggests, despite what Al Gore tells anyone who'll listen from his in-flight, private jet banana-phone.

If I am wrong, no problem, But if not... The chemical composition of our atmosphere is not what it was 100 years ago. So you may want to rethink your assessment of the effect of man made synthetic chemicals on the environment. Just sayin.  ???

If I am wrong, no problem, But if not... The chemical composition of our atmosphere is not what it was 100 years ago. So you may want to rethink your assessment of the effect of man made synthetic chemicals on the environment. Just sayin.  ???

How good was the atmospheric testing equipment 100 years ago?

Besides which, I wouldn't think our atmospheric composition would be exactly what it was 100 years ago. That still does not mean that it's a man-made phenomenon. That said, there have been many geological events not related to man that have contributed to this. So who caused all of the other global condition swings in past millennia? Was it Xenu?

Oh, and where you took that sample 100 years ago would have something to say about that. Back then cities were powered almost entirely by coal. There are detailed accounts of the air in big cities like London, New York and chicago being nearly unbreathable due to the coal smoke that choked the air.

Roll Eyes

Since the Last Ice Age it's been warming up.

ANd it will until the Halene Current shifts due to heavier fresh water entering the oceans of the world.

But IS IT MAN MADE is the question.

I say not.

But you will say yes.

At this point it is too late, we cannot change it.

With out wiping man kind from the face of hte Earth.

SOmething I hope does not happen.

Or we all could hold our breath till all those that would die.

CO2 is what we give off Mr. Scientist.

600 or 700 hundred years ago, oh yeah that was the global warming caused by the plague  2funny

and I'm just saying carbon dioxide is STILL just a trace element in our atmosphere.
