Just wondering if anyone ever had the splines stripp on final drive to wheel?? I was recently stranded when my drive shaft stripped in pinion cup. I had to have trailered to dealer as I was 400 miles from home. I recently changed rear tire myself and found wheel splines dry and worn a little. replaced O rings greased and never went any further. I wish I had but I learn the hard way sometimes. So should I replace other components when I finally get it back??

Hard to say unless you took a picture of the wear.  If not, maybe you can do a search and find a picture that looks like yours did.
Your probably alright with fresh grease and orings.  Did you put the NYLON THRUST WASHER in proper place.

Yes, there have been a few, usually caused by no maintance. There are numerous threads on the tech board about this. Search is your friend. Top of the main page is a search box, just type pinion cup, and read away.  cooldude

No, although many have had the lack of maintenance rusty hub at wheel to final, I know of no one that has posted being stranded with THAT area being stripped. Usually when seen people fix out of fear or if wear not too bad clean and grease and give better attention to it from then on out.

There have been a few...none recently though.  You may have to go back 3-5 years but I'm pretty sure that a few have been stranded by final drive failure.

two years ago i had to replace my drive shaft and pinion cup, i believe that problem caused my universal joint to go bad (transfer of vibration to uni-joint isn't a good thing)

as for your rear wheel spline, i'd be going shopping!!!  or screw someone else by selling the bike (if you've got the conscience to do that)  (if you DO do that, you're a dick.)

good luck.....  it'll be expensive.....

so I found a complete used final drive from piwalls but looks in rough shape. I was looking at new parts and manual looks like I might need some special tools to set it up right to rebuild with new gears??  Anyone here have the right tools and know how to get it done right?? my riding season is short and thought ist would last until fall with no more big rides planned. I could disassemble and ship final drive to somewhere and pay fair price to get it done right??

People usually check the drive splines fairly often because it's so easy to do at rear tire change time. I know that was the case with my '97. At 100K the rear hub looked like new but the driveshaft & pinion cup were toast. PO & myself must have never looked at it until then.  Shocked
Bought it with 57K on the clock.
BTW, still running the original rear hub at 113K.  cooldude

If you are a competent automotive mechanic, it should not prevent you from doing the work.

The SM shows special tools but they are not absolutely necessary to do the complete job.

I sure would be interested in hearing what you consider a "fair price"

The proper parts will run in the neighborhood around 700 bucks I would think.  Labor another 300 bucks.

Does that sound fair?

I am a compentant mechanic but also know that sometimes short cutting and not using proper tools leads to a mess. I only do that on things that I know I can do it on. That being said I have  never rebuilt final drive on a bike but if  special tools not really needed I would not be afraid to do it. I am not sure what fair price is not sure how long it really takes to rebuild once removed but if it takes 3-4 hours I guess thats fair if only takes 1-2 hours probaly a little steep.

Another recent thread about replacing the ring gear & pinion.

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,45083.0.html

And no, haven't started mine yet, Inzane was much more fun. I will start it sometime next week... after I get the trike cleaned up from the trip.  I did find a good used final drive at Inzane, so I have an out if the gear replacement proves too difficult.

Let me know if you have luck with the gear replacement. If you want to sell that final drive let me know I might be interested.

I am not sure where you buy parts but I just priced them all out from direct line and only $460
