... and what do people think is the max mileage on one before it needs a complete rebuild? We don't know because we don't know of anyone who has reached that mileage. Those Valkyries that have required a rebuild have done so because of something other than the accumulation of miles. I thought the one at the beginning of the thread had 450,000 miles. 'DDT' down Alabama way has over 500,000 on his bike. All he has shucked out is the rear splines. I haven't seen him on here to often lately.

Those Valkyries that have required a rebuild have done so because of something other than the accumulation of miles. I thought the one at the beginning of the thread had 450,000 miles. You mean it was still going but he had to go into it to replace the output shaft for the drive shafy? 'DDT' down Alabama way has over 500,000 on his bike. All he has shucked out is the rear splines. I haven't seen him on here to often lately. Mr. Whipitnow, you didn't have a responce on this post that I saw. I'll try to get ahold of DDT and ask him to post his mileage. If you are worrying about an engine rebuild, if you don't have close to 490K, I'd quit worrying. I don't think there is a bike out there that has taken the abuse I've given MGM, and he is still running, Balls to the Wall with no problem.

What I am wondering is if this is the most reliable bike ever made?
Yes. ......... That being said, the Honda ST's with the V4's are right there also.

Yes. ......... That being said, the Honda ST's with the V4's are right there also. DDT came up and rode with us a couple months ago he had 438,000 then. He's replaced the entire final drive a few times also the u-joint a couple times as well as the alternator a few times. Pretty sure thats what he told me.The silver/black is DDT's Tourer thats the man the legend leaning on it.The engine and clutch has never been worked on or replaced.

What I am wondering is if this is the most reliable bike ever made? I would say probably not. The 1500 Goldwing uses the same engine but is a milder bike. Milder should result in more reliability. That's one; ther may be others. The Valkyrie is by any standard very, very reliable, but I'd hesitate to say it's the MOST reliable bike ever made.

I PM'ed DDT and his response this morning was he'd mosey over here, He also said he for some reason or another, he was stuck on the 430's and no, he had not broken the 500K barrier yet.
So apparently tank is now with the most miles bike.

That's one; ther may be others. The Valkyrie is by any standard very, very reliable, but I'd hesitate to say it's the MOST reliable bike ever made. Back when the 1000 Gold Wing was popular, 3 of us in California built pulling Garden Tractors. All 3 of us had 1000 Gold Wing engines, mine was stock but the other 2 had blowers on theirs. I don't know who made the blower they were using, but them suckers could get some RPM's out of those rear wheels. One of the guys was a machinist and he built our adapter plates to hook the 1000 to a VW transmission. My tractor had been lengthened 14" to get everything under a hood. If it was not hooked onto the sled, it was real dangerous at speed. Idle was set at 1100 RPM, and 1300 to 1400 was like 14 MPH. I have my daughter looking in all of her old pictures to see if she can come up with one of the tractor. I wasn't into picture taking back then.

Re. the GL1500 Wing, there used to be a guy in the New England area the last I heard had well over 600k on his. He had his own business as a "handy man" and had all the tools of his trade in a small closed in trailer. During the warm months, he used his Wing to tow his trailer to/from the jobs and as I understand it, his Wing was one of the earlier 1500 model years. That was 3-4 yrs. ago so I have no idea if he's still using it, but I was impressed by the total mileage attained. Re. DDT, I think I recall a while back he had to replace the speedo due to the gears in it being worn out. Don't quote me, just sticks in my mind....an area where few things stick nowadays!

Question for "Tank" With consideration of your 450K, what, if any, engine, carb, or clutch work have you done??
At 263K, I'm still running the original clutch, no carb work (other than Berryman's B12 every 6 months), and the engine has never been opened further than the valve covers.
Just curious!!

Finally got out and checked my mileage. 135,261 miles - 2000 Interstate - Black Have replaced water pump (over 100k), tires, brake pads, rebuild petcock (over 100k). Have never been into the carbs, never changed spark plugs, Still starts VERY easily. Was rear-ended this past October, had to replace rear fender, tire, and trunk, repaired and repainted both bags and trunk. Bike had 25,450 miles on it when I bought it in July 2008.

My 2000 interstate has 161,000 on it. Clutch was redone by me about a thousand miles ago. I replaced alt. at 94k. Stripped the driveshaft and pinion cup once. The rest has been just maint.

I've now shared 431,000+ extraordinary miles with my best friend... She and I have been many places together, and we've shared many amazing experiences. My journey of life has been enhanced, enriched and changed beyond all expectations through the chance joining with this incredible partner. All very much unplanned and unanticipated, I might add, since I actually bought her as a second bike to help keep the miles down on the Gold Wing I had at the time.
Last December, Gordon (Lucky 13) replaced the final drive for me... the seventh time that has had to be done. The major culprit here is the lack of proper greasing of the splines and/or changing the final drive fluid. In our travels, we've had to replace tires many, many times, often in a place we haven't been before or figure to ever visit again... The mechanics at the various dealerships always swear they did the proper treatment to splines, etc., but I stopped believing them long ago... If you can do it yourself, you're better off by far... If you're like me and can't, then you, like me, will just have to take your chances and be prepared to live with the consequences...
I've been through five or six drive shafts and universal joints (couplers), replaced the alternator twice - both times with 1500 Gold Wing alternators. The thermostat and water pump have been replaced, although the latter was done as a precaution only, as there was no problem with it. I just figured it was going to crap-out sooner or later, and I was contemplating another ride up to Alaska at the time, so... I didn't want to have that to vex and disturb my serenity.
Other than those major repairs, the rest has all been routine stuff... OK, I've also been through a truck load of tires, too!!! I did replace the gas tank with an Interstate tank finally, but that had to do with reasons (fuel capacity mainly!) other than any problem with the original Tourer tank. Hard Six did a desmog for me, as well as change out the risers and cables along with several other things... Do all y'all realize we have some truely expert mechanics in our club?
While it seems, theorectically anyway, that the engine and transmission are indeed not bullet-proof, I've had no experience or reason whatsoever to prove they are not! Nothing other than changing fluids, replacing timing belts, syncing carbs and adjusting valves have ever been done to the engine... nothing. No rebuild, overhaul or repair at all... not even the rings or clutch. And, the things that have been done could each be counted on one hand.
I did replace the speedo cable twice, the speedo itself twice, and the gear at the front wheel once... Turns out that last problem was the culprit all along... An expensive and irritating problem that took a while for this non-mechanic to finally solve...
I'm often asked what my next bike will be... I always repond with, "We're going to stay together until one of us can't go any more... Depending upon which one of us that is, I'll decide what comes next then..." At the moment, it does appear she will out last me...

I finally rolled into the 100k club. Mine rolled 101,299 last night when I parked her in the garage. She was rear ended in the parking lot of a Shriner's crawfish boil benefit and I was no where near. This is the second time she has been rear ended..... She was my brother's bike, so I will never sell her. Hay Jimmyt

I'm all over 100,000 miles on this bike ( I think ) The owner before me crashed it a few times and destoryed the speedometer a couple times.... Best I can figure it's over or damn close to 100,000 and still turn's heads and seems to run better everytime I take her out on the road.

I'm ashamed to report 60,000 miles There is no reason for shame over miles not ridden. It only indicates someone else has been fortunate to be able to enjoy a little more time in the wind. May your future find your blessings increase and may your dragon serve you for years to come.
