I had one three years ago.  I should have taken a clue when they scheduled me with a doctor named Elizabeth.  I thought she'd be about my age and replulsive.  They gave me "twilight sleep" drug reporting I would be fully functional but have no memory.  She came in just before I checked out.  Early thirties and a knockout redhead.

The good news is that she reported I was "clean as a whistle."  The bad news is apparently I was quite humorous.

I will tell you the post office experience afterward may be more humiliating than the actual exam.   ???

Had the second one done last November.  It almost killed me.  (infection.pneumonia, legionaries disease)   I don't think I will ever have another one done.
We are warned that an infection could occur and you sign off that you are aware of the dangers.
Maybe the chances are higher that you'll get cancer but somehow I beat the odds.

You're message is clear and right but I had to weigh in on this.

Just in case you don't know, whenever you are handed an informed consent form for any surgery, pathology, testing, yada, you should actually read it before signing it.  And ask for it in advance of the procedure so you will read it.

These are a good thing, sounds gross but they're not. We both have had 3.

Seems I've recently read somewhere that obama and his admin have recently had the 'experience' and they really did find their heads.

A good idea to get one. The colonoscopy is nothing compared to the prep you have to drink and the 3 days without food. Make sure you get the earliest appointment in the morning , so you don't have to wait to eat.

Coming up on the 5 year mark so time to go in for my 3rd butt-o-scope.

Remember Pat's words from March 8th, 2012, only 3 days before we lost him, as he was thinking of others even then:

"I strongly recommend a colonoscopy if you are over 50. Todays polyps are tomorrows cancer..... Pat"

Don't mean to panic anyone, but something you may want to look at.  I know it seem remote, but you never know, pay attention on how it may be contracted. I have considered it and it can cause many symptoms that mimic conditions that may resemble major health issues. Kind of gross, but a fact of life.

Generally, yes.  But reading the form may give you additional questions you want to ask and discuss.  Though written by lawyers, not doctors, it is feasible you could get it modified.  For instance, I may understand the risks of such testing, but would not sign away the right to sue for blatantly negligent performance of such testing.  IE, most every legal document written was written for the sole protection of the person(s) paying for the document.  Hedging every bet can go beyond the fair and reasonable.  If everyone signs without reading it can only be bad for patients.

Jess, I understand what you're saying but with all the papers and documents being thrown at you these days if everyone stopped to read them the world would come to a halt.
Every time you click that you read all the terms and conditions you say you read it all.  Very few people do.  We'd have to quit our jobs if we read everything.
I bought a new car last year. There was a stack of papers three inches high.  I asked if that was all for me, he lied, no surprise.
TP.....Sorry for hi jacking your thread.

I understand your point.  I did not read the papers with my bank accounts, ccards, new car either, but I would read a medical informed consent.

The other paperwork you don't read only loses you money, not your life.

I just had my 4th one, ane they still can't find my head up there.

Jokingly the wife told them to look for my head on the 1st one and the same lady has done it since.

I'm 81 and they told me to come back in 6 years.

If I'm still alive, I'll go have it done.

The last InZane in Johnson City, my old riding buddy passed away as I was in the banquet eating.    Kind of ruined the trip for me.   He rode a Yama-Hopper so he only attended 1 InZane with me.   It was in the Oven town.   Padduckie.

Had one about 6 months ago.  They found one small air pocket.  Looked like a tiny white balloon.  Checked down to the stomach.  One polyp found in the stomach and removed.  Everything clear.  Recommended another one in 5 years.

Had mine done 1.5 years ago.  All clear... come back in 10 years.  This thread was timed perfect.  Went for my annual physical yesterday.   Have had the same doc for 15 years.  When it came time for the prostate exam, I looked around and said, "not even any flowers?"  And told him, "Ya know... including my colonoscopy and thoughout my life, there has only been four fingers up there... and they were all from MDs... I seem to see a trend here!"  He said "I hope they were all on a professional basis"   Grin

Get er done... it's really no big deal unless you don't.

I just turned 59 and will be going in for a physical April 4th. It's been 2 years since my last physical and so far I have never had a doctor suggest I get a Colonoscopy. It will be interesting to see if it's mentioned this time.

Evan, they will prep you, and say we will be starting the procedure now.

You will not hear the last of procedure and none of now.

You will wake up in recovery.    My Dr told me I'd have to stay in there until I farted.

Told him he'd need a gas mask.     He kind of chuckled, I ripped off a hell of a good one, and almost immediately, I think we were in a super smelly room.    He said I think we will have to go back in again and find the dead animal we missed.

Now when I go in for a procedure, he says remind me to look for the D E A D  ones this time.

Due to my father having lots of polyps in colon at a early age (20'3-30's)  (to the point it was removed ! ), I had one done at 30 and again at 40 (I'm going to be 55 in September) - both times clean, come back in 10 years - the procedure itself isn't so bad - but I can't stand that prep.... haven't had one since. DOC says both of us really should have one...

I had one 9 years ago. Doc said I didn't have to have another for ten years.

I do have a humorous story about mine though.
Had to drink a whole gallon of that stuff that tastes roughly like soapy water.
Well.....Got the first glass down and nothing.
Got the first quart or so down and still.....nothing.
Made it to the half gallon mark. still not in the least interested in heading to the bathroom yet.
Suffered through the third quart.....my brow was starting to sweat, I felt like I would be more comfy rolling to the bathroom instead or walking or running there by this time. Bloated was an understatement.
Working on the last quart of the stuff now. My future ex-wife was having a field day telling me I had to finish the whole gallon. Vile woman!
I got down to the last glass without "the urge" hitting me.
...............and then it hit.........like a ton of bricks...........
Up and off to the bathroom I rolled like a shot. Just had boxers on anyway so I was as ready as a man could get for something like this.
Sat down and......
"Houston, we have lift-off"
The hot sweat turned into a cold sweat! My whole body was shaking.....I was looking for grab handles on the side of the toilet and wondering why in Hell they weren't there. To say I needed a shower afterward would have been a "NO sh_t, Sherlock" statement but even that would have been the wrong statement.
And after all that I went in the next day, had a perfect outcome from the invasive intrusion and the damn Doctor had the nerve to tell me he didn't think I drank the whole gallon as I wasn't as "clean" as he would have normally liked! Vile Doctor!

These are a good thing, sounds gross but they're not. We both have had 3.

Seems I've recently read somewhere that obama and his admin have recently had the 'experience' and they really did find their heads.

Funny, but I think I've missed that in the news. Could you provide a link to that?

I have malignant neuroendocrine (carcinoid) cancer.

They found it last fall, verified in a colonoscopy with biopsy.

I had surgery mid February that removed about two feet of intestine, small & large and the valve in between the two. They then cut out two egg-sized tumors from my liver. Then they used radio frequency ablation to literally cook three more tumors in my liver. I still have some ten or more micro tumors slowly growing in my liver. Had they caught it BEFORE it metastasized into my liver I could have been cured.

At this point(once in my liver) there is no cure, no remission, just a slow growth requiring future surgeries and monthly injections costing $9500 each, CAT scans every 6 months or annually. MRI's and octreoscans if necessary.

My average life expectancy with treatment is 12 years, without I would have been dead within two years.

DON'T WAIT...

Now maybe some will understand my capitulation on making Inzane XV, but I am glad I got to see you all and your bikes, too!
