These are my pipes.....

As I understand it, they were made by "Thunder Manufacturing" or something along that line.
My problem is this ......

I could hear that each side didn't sound the same so I pulled the center pipe out and once started there was no return.

This is a closer look at the fiberglass packing.....

Inside the center pipe is perforated and the fiberglass is like it's woven ...... something I know I will not be able to replicate.

Who ever owned them before I must have noticed the same sound difference as they stuffed in some ordinary pink insulation used for houses. This is looking down the outer pipe to the collector.

I pulled it out with a coat hanger.....

This is the only product I could find to re-pack with and the pipes are sounding like they need to be re-packed again in less than a year. This stuff I think is more for dirt bikes I think. It is easy to wrap and slide into the outer pipe but, longevity is questionable.

My question ........ does anyone know of a better material I can use?

I'm was hoping to ask "MarkT" about this at "InZane" but I'm pretty sure he wasn't there or we'd of heard him ...... if you know what I mean!  Wink

Back in the hotrod days, I used massive amounts of steel wool, from the hardware store, whenever the cops got a little touchy about noisy exhaust. Worked pretty good in  glasspak mufflers that blew out it's guts. Lots cheaper than a new muffler. Hoser  Wink

Any fibreglass shop (boat builders/swimming pools etc) will have glass mat.
I scored a set of those years ago, turned up with no internals. You might say they were a little loud.
Ended up cutting the outer casing off and fitting a pair of 12" glass packs to the 3-1 adaptor then covering with truck stacks. Ended up sounding great and looking good.

I ordered stainless steel wool muffler packing kit.  The stainless steel lasts a lot longer than fiberglass.  I will look for a link and post it.

seeing this post makes me want to inspect the muffling material on my pipes.
those pipes in inititial post look like my exhausts, minus the chrome center tube sticking out.
at sale, i was told these were thunder exhausts.
and boy they do make THUNDER.

sometimes they are to loud for longer trips. a friend with a dB meter measured them at 113dB at 3.000 rpm, without load.

can i measure anything without taking them apart ?

to take them apart : i see some setting screws in the back, in the perforated tube.
is there anything holding the center tube in place in the front?

Thanks for any tips,
Anthony

I used the fmf glass packing for several sets of cobras some guys thought were too loud. I pulled the baffles, wrapped the baffle and tied it on with a continuous piece of stainless safety wire, sprayed a light coat of wd-40 on the glass and stuffed the baffles back in the pipes, a couple guys have had it in there for several years now and it has not burned out, so I would say your on the right path.

Found it.........  The place I bought the stainless steel wool packing kit is: http://shop.steelwooldirect.com/MUFFLER-PACKING_c10.htm  They also sell fiberglass matt and carbon fiber matt muffler packing kits.  I think the price is a bit high but then I think the same about everything today.

Thanks for the suggestions guy's!

Wish I had something to report but I for the life of me can't get the baffles out this time!  tickedoff
Last year they came so easy but this time around, I'm really have no clue as to how I'll do it. I bought one of those strap wrenches thinking I could twist it around to loosen it up but that was useless. Roll Eyes
I tried putting water in the pipes thinking it might weaken the batting in there with the same result and I sure don't want to damage the pipes. Maybe they need to burn out more.
