Dropped by the hospital today.  Darby was out for a C scan.  I waited around until they brought him back. He's on a ventilator and I'm suspicious that his coma is drug induced - though his injuries are pretty bad.  His wife, Terri, said that the good news was that sometimes he fought with the ventilator over breathing - like he didn't like it breathing for him.  I told her that Darby had a whole family of God-fearing folks at the VRCC praying for him.  I spent a few minutes with Darby, one way chatting. Then I prayed with him.  I know he'd do the same for me. He is truly in the hands of God.

I'm not sure where I just sent my post but if you get this twice - my bad!  I stopped by and visited Darby today in his intensive care room. He still hasn't been conscious. His wife said the good news was that he occasionally seemed to wrestle with the respirator as though he wanted to breath for himself.  I told her that the VRCC was like family and that there were a bunch of us God-fearing folks praying for ole Hagar.  Then I had a few moments with Darby and carried on a little one way conversation and prayed with him.  I know he'd do the same for me.  He is in the hands of God.  After I came out of the room, Terri, looked at me and asked if I was alright!  She's a mighty strong woman of faith.

Stopped by again today.  Family is still gathering at the hospital. Met his mom and sister. I can see where he got some of that Darby personality.  He is showing some activity on his right side - moving his hand - this is good. Still hasn't regained consciousness & remains on respirator.  Family agreed he has more color today. One of the benefits of being a pastor - I get a free pass to ICU! Tomorrow they are doing surgery to 'close him up' - where they took out his spleen and controlled his internal bleeding.

I stopped by the hospital today and got a chance to speak with Darby's wife and mother. Both wonderful people. We all teared up at one point or another in our talks and stories about Darby.

I know you are eager for updates, and so here is what I now know.

Darby was heading up out of Big Horn Canyon on the last big right hand sweeper (just west of the intersection of Hwy 9). He was on the outside lane of the two lanes heading up the hill when he drifted over the yellow and hit an oncoming van. Darby's wife Terri suspects he was tired after the 3 day ride because he was out of riding shape (since he hadn't ridden much this year). I also found out that he had really bad shoulders which may have factored into the negotiation of the turn.

Good news first. He looks much better! He responds to family with squeezing of hands, groans, and mouth movement. He is moving so much they had to restrain him so he wouldn't get hurt. He however hasn't communicated.

Bad news.. he doesn't have a gag reflex, and doesn't respond to prick tests. I also learned that his neck is broken. Both Darby's wife and mother felt that helmet or no helmet he would still be where he is at now.

Darby's wife Terri specifically stated that nothing is being determined at this time. All are hopeful. Continue your prayers! Terri wants prayer for God's will to be done.

Thanks for that, Josh.  Bittersweet.

It is all still surreal.

Darby is indeed in God's hands, and His will be done.  I know it's selfish for me to want to ride with him again but dang it I do!

Continued prayers for comfort for Darby and his family.   angel

Just have one thing to add to Josh's update. The family expects to meet with the neurologist tonight and get the MRI explained. They will decide soon to take Darby off the respirator - and then its up to Darby to breathe on his own.

Not clear on your meaning.  Is this like a "no resusitation" order, or do you mean he's recovering sufficiently to remove the respirator?

As of noon today, Darby was still on the respirator.  None of his family was around while I was there so I couldn't get an update.  I know they were supposed to get the MRI update last night.  Doctors haven't given them much hope - his head injury is pretty severe. He has been in a coma and on a respirator since the accident last Monday.  Anything is possible. Family has gathered to decide what to do next.  Keep trusting. I won't know anything more probably until Monday.

I just want to say what a privilege I've had getting to know Darby's family and some of his friends this past week. What a rich life & family Darby has been blessed with.  The more you know the deeper it goes. In August, just prior to the Labor Day trip, Darby had gone to Minnesota and officiated at the wedding of his own son & bride. He loved the outdoors - not just bike riding.

This may have been my final visit with Darby in this world.  His family has gathered. This morning they had a last discussion with the 'organ' donation people. Today he is being removed from the ventilator.  Doctors give almost no hope.  They suspect he may breath on his own 1 hour to 4 days once they do this.  There is almost no brain stem activity evident from the MRI.  I think family is resigned to losing Darby.  He is a strong believer and the Bible says that in heaven there will be no tears and he will receive a new body that will never get injured or wear out.  Darby had a 'near death experience' a couple years ago and when they brought him back he said, 'Don't ever do that again.'  He saw the other side and he knew it was much better than this world. Through the sadness, I'm holding on to this.  Continue to remember his family.

This is heartbreaking, but not unexpected.

I know Darby has done so much good here, and he is being called home to do more good for all of us.  Darby's faith is strong, and was very evident when we spoke.

I pray for his easy, comfortable passing into God's loving arms.  His reward is near!

Blessings to Darby's family and close friends in this trying time.

Thank you all so very much for your love, prayers, and concern. It's been a Roller coaster ride, lots of ups and downs. Darby w is one of the finest men I ever hope to meet. I've found so much healing under his care. We all know the different risks we take every day starting when we wake up. If I may say, PLEASE! Don't just tell your loved ones what you want, put it on PAPER! Hospital couldn't do a lot of what Husband wanted because it wasn't written down. Even when the family was in agreement about what he wanted.  Lots of love you guys. Try to keep you posted now that I've found the link.
