When I had my shocks off to lube the rear end back in May or June, I saw that the lower shock bushings were looking tired.  Since then, I've noticed a creak when the rear shocks are compressed, like when entering a driveway, so I thought maybe the bushings were worn through, permitting metal on metal wear.  I ordered the green VTX shock bushings that I currently use st the top of the shocks, but when I pulled the old bushings out, I found that while needing replacing, they weren't worn through.  I haven't ridden Gryphon since, but I suspect I'll have to search further to find the source of the creak.

In any case, I took a few photos for the sake of those who like to see pics before they proceed to work on their own bike.  I pressed the old parts out using my woodworker's bench vise and a couple of appropriately-sized sockets.  Sockets were not required to reassemble with new bushings, but I did apply some spray silicone lube before using the vise.

its probably just the seats creaking.  they do that when you hit a bump like an entry into a driveway

Thanks for the reminder, I minus well order a set while gasoline is cheap and money isn't as scarce. Dunno about anybody else's, but the bottom of my rear shocks is a rust spot and I've had to spray on rust inhibitors there periodically.

Old(er) post, but I just found these.

Someone a while ago posted these as a replacement shock bushing. Never looked into them too much, as I have 2 sets from Gary before he passed away.

The Honda (and Gary's) bushings are shaped to fit the ID of the shock eye.  The ID tapers down towards the centre of the eye, then widens out again at the other side.  I don't know if the lack of taper on those nylon bushings would be unhelpful.

Thought of what you said, so I searched for the original post, was from back in 2011.

No mention of being an issue, at 10K, but no further follow up.

Replaced mine with the nylon bushings a year and a half ago.  They hold up great.  THey are a bit firmer to press in the shocks, but they don't try to slip out or anything.  They are actually a bit easier to get in because they don't want to mush around so much trying to start them (pressed in with a vise), but they take a bit more force.  Silicone lube helps.  They do make the shocks a bit harder to remove, unless you drop the swingarm all the way down, because they're less flexible.  Overall I'm very glad I did it and having ordered a half dozen sets, I'll never have order them again!

I have the Progressive 440 shocks on an Interstate, will the Honda VTX bushings work on these shocks, if not what would?  I presently have Gary's bushings installed that were made for the Progressive 440s by him.

Just curious knowing it is not a too current posting,  at about how many miles (or years) does one think they need to replace the rear shock bushings either with Honda VTX's or OEM Valkyries or others?

Also, symptoms while driving Valk of going bad would be what besides obviously taking them out and looking at them if cracked or broken or damaged/deformed somehow?

My 97 OEM shocks are making this noise too but only when riding two up. As for the VTX green bushings, I did this a few years ago and they are holding up well.

No, you'll need Progressive bushings.  Same ones that were used on the 440s also fit the new 444s.  I got mine by calling Progressive directly.

Symptoms of bad shock bushings for me anyway are a head shake while slowing down. The easiest and quickest way is to remove the top bolts that hold the shock on-if not centered when you remove  the bolts your shock bushings are worn/shot/kaputsky. RIDE SAFE.
