Good evening from Pensacola/ Milton FL area. I'll put the word out about your trip this way. Can you send me the route to and thru pan-handle that you'll be riding. I imagine some of us already down this way might like to catch up with you guys some where during your ride.  coolsmiley
Optimistic about catching up with you at some point of your ride!

 Thanks

When others head home after the weekend on whatever day that may be I'm thinking of riding over to Pensacola to visit the http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/attractions/

Feel free to ride along. If you've never been I can highly recommend it - and entrance is FREE!

There's an IMAX and flight stimulators that are pay to play.

Plan on spending a day there, and it is still hard to see all of it. I have been there several times, and enjoy it every time.

I was there last week and have gone every couple of years for the last 30 years and it just keeps getting better and better.  There's been a second building added and a trolly ride on to the ramp behind the buildings to tour the airplanes awaiting restoration.

Apalachicola to the Museum is about 177 miles and most of it is 4 lane with a multitude of stop lights.

There doesn't seem to be a country way to get there without adding a bunch of miles.

You can go west 98 to Port St Joe and then take 71 up to highway 20.  Then take 20 all the way to Niceville/Valparaiso....but then you'll have to go back south to 98 to Pensacola from there.

71 and 20 are all two lane back woods roads and not at all scenic until you start to ride next to the bay just east of Niceville....then it's 4 laned to 98...and 98 is 4 laned all the way to the Naval Museum.

I looked at that. Is that quicker than just using 98?

I thought my head was going to pop off the last time I rode to the NAS through all the traffic lights. Cheesy

It's way longer with miles, but about the same time wise.  It's just very boring with nothing to look at except pine trees....AND...it's two laned.  If you get behind some old farmer driving his tractor, you're stuck until you can pass him.

You're not going to shave off any time either way you go.  98 has tons of traffic lights, but there's much more to look at.

Inbetween the devil and the deep blue sea.

Hwy 98 gives me tht opportuntiy to ride along Navarre Beach. Had a 2 week vacation there in a gulf front house with some friends from England quite a few years ago.

Going to see how many high rises have been built to f' it up  Shocked

If you're not in any hurry, and would rather take in the scenery, once you go past Tyndall AFB and get into Parker, take Business 98.  It hugs the south side of Panama City.  You pop out on the west end of Panama City...then you can go over the Hathaway Bridge and take the beach route (Front Beach Road) through Panama City beach.  You pop out at the east end of Phillips Inlet on 98.  From there, you get on 30A and by pass 98 and enjoy the scenery again.  It will take you back to 98 east of the Sandestin area.  Then it's just 98 through Destin and Fort Walton Beach until you get to Navarre where you can take the beach road to Pensacola Beach.

Weather is lookin' great for Friday and Saturday with temps in the 60's. They claim possible AM showers for Sunday in the Florida panhandle I'm hoping thats overnight if not we might be able to run from it. Really looking forward to this ride I sent out a text this morning to everyone I had a # for and so far only one has backed out. Everyone else claims its a GO.

While you are at the NAS, give this old girl a look, One of my techs who retired 6 years ago, had several thousand hours in these, and actually had several hundred hours in this very aircraft. I went to a reunion of his squadron at the museum 2 years ago. Really neat to meet some of these old pilots.
