I just received a GW 1500 final drive, driveshaft and U-joint. All are in really good condition and I am going to replace my Valk splines, ect. with these parts. My splines are 40% gone, I will take pictures and write up how it is done with a tally of costs.

Cool! If you want an extra hand or even if it's just company, I'd be happy to come over.

That would be most welcome Kendall! My friend is back from Aruba, so when you are ready for the CT mount, let me know. I will start the swap this weekend, I'll text you the details.

Hi John, did you find the other posts on doing the swap?
I figure you did buy the GW rear with the 5 pin spline, not the 6?

There were a couple of years of 1500 wings where the flanges wouldn't interchange with us, but the spline from the ring gear was still right for us... -Mike

Yes, my "new" hub is a 6 pin. I will have to source a 5 pin. The price was right.

Which do you want? I can look at my GW spare and see what I have. I may still have a 5 pin flange from my IS. The pins are for the rear wheel rim only.
I'm changing my 88' (88'-89' rims are 6 pins) GW over to 5 pins. The newer rim uses a larger diameter rotor (I figure better braking) and I'm going to try my Valkyrie rim to see if it fits the GW.

I need the 5 pin. I am going down to Bent Bike in Lynnwood Saturday and get one. Maybe they will swap me for the 6 pin I have.

So far so good. I was able to press the spline sleeve into the ring gear with the 100 ton press at work. It was a little over-kill for the job! I installed the U-joint, assembled the final drive and I am waiting patiently for the new flange hub and driveshaft to arrive.

Do you have to set the gear lash when you do this ? I`ve never done that and it looks beyond my capabilities.

When you press out the splines from another ring gear and use it, leaving everything else original, you are supposedly good-to-go. I've refurbished two final drives this way, but have only used one of them for about 20 miles, therefore - "supposedly"... -Mike

It seems if I have a spare of something I never need it. So I will try to stockpile.

I used the Valk ring gear, bearing and shim. The backlash and gear contact pattern did not change. The only thing I used from the GW was the spline sleeve which is identical to the Valk part. The U-joint and pinion cup are also identical but the driveshafts are diff lengths. I am buying a new driveshaft and hub flange.

Wow? So you have already done the whole job and got the bike back on the road? Only 1 post with pictures?? I was hoping for a little more. I have never worked on the rear drive of anything. Seems to be a mythical type job with the spacing and the other stuff I see on the auto How-To shows. Glad to hear it worked.

I went for a walk way down in the woods yesterday and came home with... I don't want to become the crazy cat lady, who wants to give this cat a home ? ! ? !-Mike

Seems to be a mythical type job with the spacing and the other stuff I see on the auto How-To shows. Glad to hear it worked. My thought was hubcapsc had an excellent tear down write up and the only thing I needed to add was how to press it apart. Any auto machinist can do the job as well. As far as ring and pinion set ups go this one would be easy enough but is unnecessary since the pinion gear is not disturbed and the original ring gear, bearing and shim is used. If you grab hold of the pinion cup and hold the spline sleeve and rock them back and forth that is called backlash. It can be measured with a dial indicator, I noted the original measurement prior to tear down. During re-assembly I painted a ring gear tooth with gear indicator paste, or you can mix white paint with wheel bearing grease. I checked the gear tooth contact pattern and it was fine. The backlash also did not change. I am confident that using this procedure utilizing the GW spline sleeve or pressing out a new one from a ring and pinion set is a great way to save money over a complete final drive. Having said all this I feel that this job is do-able by a skilled home mechanic, I have been a Journeyman Machinist for 22 years and I was a US Navy engineer for 10 years before that. My other hobby is rockcrawling jeeps and I have set-up countless ring and pinion gear set-ups over the years. I found this to be a fairly simple job but if you have doubts I suggest finding someone near you to help. I live 50 miles north of Seattle (GO SEAHAWKS!!) and am willing to help. PM me if you have questions.

Just giving you a little ribbing John. I remember there was a nice write up on doing it, with pics, just didn't remember who. Figured when I needed to know how to do this I could do a search.
Yes, you live in Marysville, near Tulalip Casino. I like going there and spending a couple of nights at their 5 start hotel, and do a little gambling. Wife likes the shopping. I still haven't gone through Cabela's yet.
I was thinking of offering my services while you where do this job, but didn't know how I would get down there. That's why I was asking if you needed any help with parts, but you did good.

Next we're going to be swapping rear wheels and doing the bearing mod on my bike. I'm also going to pull it all apart and inspect the entire driveline from the universal back.
I'm very grateful that John let me help him out with the tear-down as it removed many doubts about what I'd find.
