brought the dragon out of hybernation today.
replaced the battery, given the winter we had, I'm not sure a battery saver would have saved her.....

Anyway, in putting thje covers back etc, I noticed that the RIGHT side cover would not fasten..

It appears that the tag the side cover clips into has broke off.
This isthe pice that goes under the frame and the set lock is in. Is there a fix to this other than replacing the whole plastic piece?

Thanks

If you do not have the broken piece , it can still be repaired with ABS plastic glue. O N L Y black plastic ABS ( not the multi purpose glue , It WILL NOT ) work. You form the shape with masking tape and start with a layer of glue. Let it dry for 24 hours and add more glue. Build up the layers every 24 hours until you have a little more than you need. It can be filed or sanded to the finish shape. Before the sanding , make sure it is fully dried. I have done several repairs this way.

That's a good idea prez. I didn't think of that. Both of mine were broke on my newest bike and I used a good quality Velcro. Seems to be working great so far. But I did shave down the 3 little ribs first. Lets the Velcro stick better and the Velcro is about the same thickness as the ribs.

When removing the side covers, I've watched many riders pull straight out on both ends at the same time. You're asking for broken tabs doing that. ALWAYS....pull out the back end first, swing out slightly so as to unhook the front tab from the center cover. You'll never have a tab break that way, replace the side cover in the reverse order by hooking the front first, then swing the back end in place. They were never meant to be pulled straight off and pressed straight on.

You can also use a small oval rubber grommet in there.

Where the tab is broken on the center cover you can put a rubber grommet in there. It holds pretty good.

It would have to be broken in a very specific way for that to work wouldn't it?

On my interstate the previous owner had broken the little tab inside the hole of the center cover and repaired with the grommet. I think the more common break is on the side cover tab. But the way he described it it sounded like the little tab on the center cover.

My girl had a broken tab on the right side cover also, and the PO jerryrigged it with a large paper clip.  All I ended up doing was fabricating a little metal piece with a slot in it that would fit just right in the tongue of the mating part.  The way I attached the metal piece to the side cover was with two small button head screws which I later painted red to match the side cover.  Problem solved.  If I was smart enough to post a picture I would  Grin

Yes, it is the center male/tongue piece from the center cover.

I was wondering about possibly making a tab out of metal.
Velcro might be the easiest fix however.

Bunch of repair tips below.  Check out reply #12, using a staple, heat and epoxy.
